New 4 jaw chuck for the mini lathe

When dialling in a part, with the indicator on the outside, the rule is "tighten the highs, loosen the lows".

When you were trying to undo the "backplate", you were actually undoing the nuts on the back end on of the spindle. Those nuts set the load on the spindle bearings, so need to be retightened, the same amount as they were undone.

Little hint, color tape the jaws, you can zero in in about 2 minutes.

Hi I would have sent the chuck back it looks well damaged on the back and needs to be a good fit out of the box

I plan on making a back plate adapter with a bigger chuck at 6 inches.

just practice.. My mind simply works " high and low " nowadays.. IF its pushing my indicator , tighten down and loosen the opposite side, if its letting my indicator out further, time to back off the jaw and tighten that far side .. It used to take me 10 minutes , its now about 1 minute to get dialed in.. I still prefer my 3 jaw, especially after the grinding.

Checkyou didn't have to take spindle apart all you had to do is get some set screws long enough to fit in Chuck and go thru spindle and use nuts

no no no doing it wrong buddy use the fourj jaw Chuck jaws to hold on to the bar u have on 3 jaw Chuck and use the jaws to center body of 4 jaw Chuck then cut ur back to fit spindle diameter. Again use long set s scews in 4 jaw and slip thru spindle nose then just use nuts

Always place a piece of cardboard on the top of the lathe bed so that if you drop the chuck you won't damage the top of the bed. Just like you you did!

Did you consider clampung the 4 jaw onto the spindle plate without involving the 4 jaw when opening up the relief?

you need to use dead center i think before you tighten the Chuck on the spindle plate to get center.

You are not stupid. I figured it out just as you did. I am @8:52. I would locktite the set screws in. I am sure that is what you do. I have the same spindle plate config as you on my "Central Machinery" Lathe. If you like the chuck you got, can you provide a link? Thanks man! You did all the hard work for us. How did you remove the pins that kept the 4 jaw's screws in place?

bit of a late reply but doing them one by one put 2 nuts on the screw and lock them together (loosen the bottom one while tightening the top one) then just loosen the bottom nut, because it is locked by the one on top of it it will loosen the screw. To tighten the screw back in do the same but tighten the top nut. (you will of course need 2 spanners the same size to do this)

Can you explain in short why 4 jaws is better than 3. Better grip for smaller workpiece? Or something else.
