The wing-tips are different as well. The tips on the dark grey jet are parallel to the axis of the jet and seem to be moving. The tips on the light grey jet however seem to be canted inwards from the trailing edge

The darker airframe is probably due to lighting and camera automatic gain control. We are looking at the shadowed side except for the bright streak in front of one wing, while the other is illuminated by direct sunlight over most of the underbody. It could be a specular reflection of sunlight which would make it very bright and contribute to the difference in camera gain (if specular, then the paint may be deliberately have a specular reflection (called non lambertion) to minimize light bouncing back the same direction it came from and thereby making it harder to detect except for narrow solid angles. Note the difference in background sky brightness. This indicates the camera gain is different between the two images.

The wing tips are a puzzle. For a fighter, you prefer to minimize the angular moment of inertia to improve snappy rolls and therefore you don’t want weight at the wing tips. But these drooping wing tips might be supporting heavy loads which would have to be dropped before engaging in close combat maneuvering. Perhaps they are some kind of grappling mechanisms designed to latch onto loyal wingman drones. The benefit would be to tow 2 wingman drones with small fuel tanks for long range missions. Small fuel tanks on wingman drones mean smaller drones and lighter drones. This in turn gives the drones 2:1 thrust to weight ratio, lower drag, harder to see, huge flight envelope, and possibly 20 g turn rates. Any aircraft that can latch onto drones during flight and release them would be a unique 6th generation attribute.

The January image is a prototype, hence white. The December image is a production version hence the black color. More often then not a Chinese prototype is yellow, production versions are always dark colored or black.

I tend to agree that this is possibly a second prototype plane. I don't think they could have modified the first test plane this much so quickly for this second plane to be the first one. Begs the question how many planes did SAC build so far and at what stages of development are each plane in? Are there also multiple CAC's J-36 existing already in various stages of development and ready to fly?

Not for the duration of that footage. But whether the engine emits smoke at a particular time depends on temperature, altitude, humidity throttle settings, acceleration, whether it has just used afterburners etc. So there isn't enough information to say whether the new plane has a less smoky engine in general.

I've thought the same myself hoax/AI /CG,based upon the Chinese struggle w/metallurgy in jet engine developement. Just now 14-15 yrs. after debuting the 5 gen J-20 is getting it's proper engine it was designed for and previously was powered by J-15 Russian Flanker knock offs. HOW could they produce 6th gen engines w/all the electricity generation required for 6 gen specs,super computing,adv. sensing,sit. awareness, drone wingmen control and poss. laser weaponry,not to mention lacking access to the most advanced computer chips????

after calm down, i prefer do not directly define these two test prototype as gen6 fighter, to be more strict to China, i prefer to call these two plane as a way to real gen6 fighter, or a way to next generation air combat 1950s, before the success of F4, American aerodynamic industry provide new plane every 2 to 4 years, today we call these plane as F100 series, different corporations as well as DARPA and NASA, work on the future air combat design, the final result is not only the F4 alone, there are KC10, C130, C5, A7, XB70, F102, F105, F104, F106, EA6, E3, EP3, P3 and there are even more than these. before the glorious 60-70s, there are f86, F89, B52, but after that, there are F14, E3, E2, F16, B1, and F15, the theory of air combat completely changed, and it last till now the two plane are a conclusion of the past ages, just F22 in 1997, the air combat will change once again based on plane instead of based on weapon as the past 3 decades

According to the practice of J20 development, the very first technical demonstrators used number XX01 and XX02, and the first prototype used the number XX11. So, this number 36011 is actually the first prototype of J36, and about 6 of them will be built and make test flight simultaneously for about 3 years till it begins to be produced. That is to say, J36 will entre service about 2028.
