There's nothing to explain from my point of view. People where paying up to 1000$ to buy PS5 to scalper while the retail price in store was 450$. This clearly send the message to sony "some people are willing to pay more". My fellow Europeans we've got: - 800€ console - 72€ for playing online (each year) - 30€ for the 10 cent piece of plastic vertical stand - 50/70€ for the controller (that will drift after 6 months) - 70€ for each game - In a year from now will not achieve 60 fps Guys just get a pc, it will cost more but you will get better performance and a machine that can also be used for productivity and not just videogames. Also, consider that games on pc cost less, you don't have to replace controllers every 6 month because of drifting, you don't have to pay for online, you can choose where to buy games from. At the end of the day, the cost will be more or less the same when you take into consideration all factors.

So in my opinion between inflation and added functionality the cost of a Playstation has not changed. That price drop on the PS4? That was the end of the line for such being enabled by die shrinks to denser and more power efficient process nodes. The PS4 and Xbox One only got one major die shrink before the changing costs of state of the art semiconductors kicked in. This is why there was never anything done at 7nm or in the considerable range in between that and the 16nm node used for the Sony and Microsoft revisions and following mid-gen upgrade models. It used to be that newer denser nodes offered a lower cost per transistor. No longer. Porting also became much more arduous and costly. Thus there is just one revision for the PS5, to TSMC's 6nm node, which is highly compatible with designs for the 7nm node. It allowed for a somewhat less power hungry PS5 and increased circuitry for the Pro. What it didn't do was reduce the cost for the APU and only allowed modest savings on the newer power and cooling design in the Slim. Sony isn't cutting the price on the PS5 because they can't. It just doesn't work that way anymore.

I don't think there will be a next console generation, not as we traditionally know it. Consoles have always been watered down PCs technically, but the distinction between the two is virtually nonexistent now to the point where I think they need a drastic rework on the focus of what a console offers and how the player interacts with it. They have to do something different, this is the first console generation I've completely skipped because there is not one single solitary reason why I would pay additional money to do what my PC can do except worse, and I'm terribly bottlenecked by a VERY old CPU. I'd rather pay a fraction of the cost of a console to swap a part here and there in my PC every so many years than be stuck with a piece of hardware that's already long obsolete by the time it comes out with a content desert for years.

Now we have most of their games, you can use console controllers for controller friendly games easier than ever thanks to a big shift to built in support for it, and buying and playing games has never been easier or simpler than ever. The investments are superior. Consistent sales on games, more productivity, more value, no subscription just to play games online, and you can always sail the high seas to demo a game before you commit to purchase. The best part is having far more control over settings, and mod support. Consoles are just under-powered PC's sold at a high price.

not really. i have a rtx 3060 that i love and game on more then my ps5 because it outperforms it with my 5600x in most games but a ps5 pro will be substantially more powerful then my 3060

Sony also updated the Blueray always so every blue ray coming out later still ran, while most blue ray player showed an error and you had to update manully. PS3 was the best value console back then

​@@gamerforlife3946The only reason why the price is so high is overpriced modern GPUs. PS5 Pro includes RX 7800 XT equivalent chip. Since this card alone costs $500, it is expected to see, that a whole console, that also includes a CPU, a motherboad, a case and a controller costs just $200 more.

Almost 50% more expensive than the current system, no disc drive and only a minor upgrade over the current system. Meanwhile, they're trying to sell this as being able to to hit 120 fps when they sold the current systems on "4k 60 fps" when most of the games are running at 30fps or an upscaled 1440p. All this while also NOT lowering the price of the lesser system. Sony can F right off with this BS. I've been so let down by the last two console generations. I've been gaming more and more on PC over the last 10+ years ... at this point, I don't see myself buying into the next generation of consoles and gaming exclusively on PC.

45% faster GPU-wise is not a minor upgrade. It is like going from 4060 to 4070. And double the RT performance. Plus, there is PSSR, which looks a lot better than FSR. PS5 usually upscales from 720p to 4K via FSR and the image quality is really poor. Pro will be upscaling from 1080p to 4K via PSSR. This means there will be a massive difference in image quality between these two consoles.

@@stangamer1151 - PSSR doesn't look "a lot better than" FSR. We literally haven't seen anything performance-wise other than him describing it and his description is quite literally the same as FSR and DLSS. That's like opening a McDonald's, flipping the M upside down and calling it McDowell's. "Look, it's completely different!" lol And upscaling from 1080p is not impressive. That is quite literally DVD-quality. Even if the system could handle outputting true 4k (which it can't), The OG PS5 was sold on the fact that it was a "4k 60 fps" machine. If both of those are a lie, why in the world would you believe that the Pro can consistently do "4k 120 fps"??

Why I don't buy Playstation anymore: 1. I don't want to spend that much money for this 2. I can get much cheaper games from Steam 3. No more exclusive games, I can wait a year to play their exclusive games. They need the money. I can spend a year cleaning my backlog while waiting.
