Airfix's new 1/24 scale Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IXc is finally here! In the previous two videos I started working on the basic cockpit and the wings, including the ammunition and weapon bays. In this video I finish painting the cockpit, apply the decals to the instrument panel and other areas of the cockpit, do a tiny amount of chipping, and then close up the fuselage. In the next video I will be building the Merlin engine that powered the Spitfire.

Wow looking fantastic. Enjoy how you climbed that mountain of problems and you won. That's modeling. Best part is you showed how to correct it so it can help others. 👍👍 great job.

I’ve bought my first 1/24 scale model only 3 days ago (hid it from my wife😂), it’s a Junker JU-87B-2 new tooling model so looking forward to doing that, watching your video giving plenty of info and funny enough I had the same fuselage fitting problem on the 1/72 scale spitfire (knowing I’d also made a bad fitting internally), your comment about some parts not being seen once the fuselage is closed up makes me think it would be good if they could make some sort of a clear section available on one side for display optional purposes, I’d consider it in the larger scales Great video

Clear sections are an interesting idea: when I built my HK 1/32 Lancaster I used clear parts for one half of it (although it could be argued that the HK kit lacked sufficient detail to bother!). I've got the RFM Panther cutaway version which also looks interesting. Enjoy the Ju-87!

I had similar rear bulkhead fit problems with my Revell Mk 9 (1/32] with the Eduard Brassin cockpit like your problem solving and pointing out the areas of concern. And that Brass paint came out nice. Looks more realistic than what I’ve experienced with Vallejo.

I have found with earlier 1/24 Airfix kits the tolerance of the part is so tight that leaving paint on things like the airframe parts will cause issues. It is always worth cleaning out the slots and tha mating side of the frame.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right. Bandai kits are another example where this is essential. I cleaned up the mating surfaces of the bulkhead inserts, but stupidly forgot to put masking tape into the slots themselves - and of course, it is virtually impossible to get paint out of those once its in.

Mine arrived in the post today, I'm finding your build informative and helpful as I've not done any modelling for years. This build may be put on the back burner while I practice on cheaper kits first.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Жыл бұрын
Glad to find it was helpful, David. It wouldn't hurt to practise on a cheaper kit (useful to first check on Scalemates to see how old the tooling is). This kit has no major pitfalls except for the ejector pin marks in the wings that I should have filled earlier. Ooops.

Nice work! Looking forward to building this. When I built the Hellcat I somehow managed to get the cockpit rotated ever so slightly and that created all kinds of problems. Liquid Mask became my best friend in that build and it will be in this one. On the Hellcat I installed magnets to hold several of the removable panels in place. If the panels fit well it doesn't take much to hold them.

@@ModelNerd I wonder if these tolerances are a byprodulct of CAD design? The parts are designed to fit so snugly, a layer of paint can throw things off?

The cockpit looks very good and Airfix seem to have put a lot of effort in. Its a shame about the cockpit fit in the fuselage. I was wondering if it would be best to build the cockpit in the fuse half so you can be sure that the frames are fully home and centred at fuse seems.

I think I found a mistake in the instructions. Part D53 looks like the headrest for the seat that attaches to the armoured plate above the belts. It is not shown anywhere in the model and not mentioned anywhere in the build but can be seen in the diagrams for the Canopy on the top of page 11 of the instructions. Checking photos of the Spitfire seat the headrest is present. Looks like the factory missed this part entirely in the build.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Жыл бұрын
Good point - I hadn't noticed this before. I'm guessing headrests were common to all marks?
@joyjppercival131
@joyjppercival131 Жыл бұрын
They seem to be from all the reference material I can find online. It seems a simple fix to the error, paint part D53 matt black to look like leather and glue in place once the belts have been installed i roughly the centre of the armoured plate.

Really enjoying your build itching to start mine in the new year, I think it’s wrapped under the tree 🌲. Can I ask a question: with so much detail do you think it could displayed in a cutaway format or several removable panels as it seems such a shame have it all covered. Regards Fred
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Жыл бұрын
Thanks Fred - I hope Santa has indeed been good to you! In terms of the cutaway - the engine panels can be left off (there is no option for magnets to keep them attachable, unlike some kits). The armament covers can be left off too (or just dropped into place instead of glued). A lot of the cockpit is visible still (if you have the canopy open). To be honest I can't think of any extra detail that would be revealed by a cutaway - there tends not to be too much in hidden places.

4:17 There is a reason you had trouble with the decal on the part with the raised center. The decal is scaled wrong, it is too small. The white dots are supposed to line up with the two other raised bumps.

would the cockpit pipework be copper rather than brass?

I wondered that too, but the instructions call out brass and in the images I've seen (many of which are restorations, I admit) the pipework is either brass or painted interior green.
