You’re giving away all our secrets, mate! However, I’m glad somebody prevailed upon the pilots to do it the “tug” way instead of the “ship” way. This illustrates clearly why most pilot stations will have at least one former tug skipper in their mix of unlimited masters. Being a Harbor Pilot or a Bar Pilot is the absolute epitome of vessel handling, but if there is a better way of doing things, they need to be open to it.

Please stop saying SORRY… you have nothing to be sorry about. You give us a wonderful insight to tug and barge operations.your video and audio equipment gets better and better over time. IF it was, and its not, a National Geographic program then perhaps the small and insignificant blemished would or could be commented on. For you to record, edit and put up as part of a hobby is wonderful and thrilling to see. For others they must see this as it is someone who wants to show an additional part of the marine industry, not as a documentary producer ( which could be a second career for you) but as a tug captain going above and beyond “use his job” To get the pilots and other tugs to go along with your plan took both courage and for them to appreciation of your skills. I think with you working with the docking team [ tugs and pilot] over time has showed them what you can do and so allowed them to realise “its not your first tug job!” As it all went well your relationship with the docking team can only enhance. One point Different is not Wrong its just different….. with it all going to plan this different approach shows you think and are open to try and bring other experiences into your current area of operations.. If you stop thinking you stop getting better. CUOTO Amacf

More than 50 years ago I had a couple of Pipefitting uncles who were working welding up the alameda Hess refinery there in St. Croix. They flew into St Thomas then transferred by boat into St. Croix. They said it was a tough job welding in the constant heat of the day… the overnight shift was the more desirable 12 hour shift. They were working 6/12’s on a Union job so the money more than made up for the undesirable aspects of the job. Given the work schedule, they didn’t do a lot of the fun things that St. Croix had to offer. My Uncle Gene was terrified of flying so the trip damn near killed him! 😅 it was the only time he flew in his life. If he could have ridden one of the ships back into Houston he would have…

what y dont understand is why you pick up the barge alongside for manouvring it alongside the tanker..(or in this case the jetty) .. when we have to tugs on a tow, (One on the back and one towing) we have them short on the back, and the other tug on the back also close near the tow, we manouvre them on the both towropes alongside... you also have a good control over the tow.. Also in more havy wheather.. .les work on deck... Happy new yaer Tim! , Regards Bugsier 5. .

Nicely done Tim. I think you were saying but did not actually say that you like to dock ‘flat’ because it spreads the stress on the barge out avoiding twisting and bending snd so-forth, so the vessel lasts longer which is what the owners want of a good tug captain. The ‘nicer’ you are to your ships the more the owners with give you the work ( I know in this case it’s your barge) Cheers Warren

Thanks for sharing this I have a somewhat lightly related experience as a young man working on the tanks and piping in oil, Gas LNG. On several occasions pulling out all of the stops to make repairs or rush to complete a project because a ship was forced to hold off shore unable to off load because the terminal was unable to receive the product. What a madhouse. This was back in the early 70’s I don’t recall the amount of money the terminal owner had to pay but it was a bunch back then keeping the ship off shore or docked and unable to off load out a lot of pressure to complete a scheduled project or make a repair. A lot of overtime and around the clock work. Pulling parts off site that needed hot work crazy times.

Hey Tim (and team) I have been a fan for a couple years and wanted to wish you a great New Years and 2023. I grew up on a 58' twin engine salmon boat (trawler) in SE Alaska and always loved watching my dad perform the artistry of getting into and out of berths with a relatively long and slender pleasure craft that had been converted for fishing. Having two screws definitely gives you options! More often than not, watching my father dock was like watching a gorgeous woman step into a hot bath but on one occasion we came in from the fishery and dad misjudged the docking and smacked the barge we were to have unloaded at. He was so embarassed and pissed he finished pivoting and went straight back out of the inlet and we sold our catch somewhere else.

Tim, I know exactly what you mean when you spoke about the assist tug changing how the barge reacts if connected. It's the same when my wife insists on helping me with loaded supermarket trollies and ends up fighting my input with her input. I'm 'sort' of joking here of course, but at the same time I am being serious. When it is just you controlling the trolley you can make its momentum work for you. You can rotate it so you push through its CoG. You can change direction early because you know it will take time. None of that works if your wife is hanging on because she thinks she knows best. Women! What can you do? 😉😉😉

Tim, running further into the harbour may have proved embarrassing if there were ships scheduled to get out? Anyway it was a lovely day to be delayed. Sailed from Brazil into the area in 1973 , I had never seen water so blue- a bit of a lie as just getting 5 kliks off any salt water coast to a landsman is unbelievably BLUE, exquisitely blue. Hope Santa didn’t get too drunk but for you the best new year!

Your crew makes it look so smooth! Great work. Any chance you could give us some coverage of your vessel markings, day shapes and light configurations? I just completed the Rules of the Road test for the USCG OUPV license, it would be cool to see a vessel over / under 50m towing (long tow / short tow) all lite up. Thank. you!!

Ia there someway to add the headway numbers of the barge on the screen? Say in the corner of the screen? Beyond that nI find you videos very instructual. I have handled a number of 40 ft plus sailboats and find the differences great. Thanks Paul
@TimBatSea

Thank you for watching Paul. Even I don't have headway numbers from the barge. I can only assume it's going roughly the same speed as the tug. CUOTO

When you are in the doghouse pulling in wire while still moving forward, is your mate or someone in the tower watching what is happening out front? Or can you see out front from the doghouse?
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. The doghouse offers excellent view aft, but not so much forward. But Luke, my mate would be steering in the lower house. CUOTO

Sorry if you've already answered this but why is it necessary to tow on wire? Seems it would be easier to tie up along side or push like in NY. Thanks Cap'n

Thank you for watching. New York harbor is just that. A harbor. St Croix's channel goes from a couple thousand feet of water to just enough for a ship to use in a the distance of this video. Add to that it's perpendicular to the current and trade winds. All of this produces swell that makes towing the barge into the port the better option. CUOTO

What are you loading or unloading? If loading is there a refinery on St. Croix, where does the crude come from? If unloading, where and what did you load? thanks!
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. St Croix used to be one 8f the world's largest refineries. But today it is used as a tank farm. Oil comes from all over. But I would guess that much of it gets refined in Trinidad. CUOTO

Good luck with the Insta360. Are you getting the X3? I've had one for about 3 months. Other than my cellphone camera it's my first, and I'm on a bit of a lumpy learning curve. I'm interested in seeing your results. Love your work.

Thank you very much for watching. The entire 360 thing is very difficult to learn and there are many extra steps to take. I just am now starting to use this new one here on SVP. But ill be bringing it to work too. CUOTO

@@TimBatSea I only got the Insta360 because, on my accidental KZbin channel, my cellphone videos only showed my head and shoulders weaving back and forth while rowing my sharpie skiff. At least with the Insta360 you get to see the boat too. I wish I knew how to do voice-over like you do. I'm a MOB (Moldy Old Bloke) who only knows how to "push the buttons, and watch the lights flash." I've been in boars my whole life, and your productions are wonderful to watch. I built my skiff 'cause I'd been boatless for 12 years, for the first time since I was 19. We've logged a bit over 1600 miles since Some Cats Swing was launched in July of '18. I've watched your SVP channel some, but the Tug tugs me. You and Keep Turning Left keep me on the water, when the winds and tides are against me.

I have noticed in previous workings with Pilots that there seems to be lots of confusion and minor misunderstandings that leads to a not so smooth outcome. This one looked much smoother and a little quicker.
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. It should be said that pilots play a very crucial role in the safe operation of what we do. Niw that we have been working with the pilots here in the Caribbean, we have all had yo make minor adjustments to how we say things and how we do things. But as with everything, the more we work together, the better we all become. CUOTO

Interesting. I spent five minutes trying to remove the smudge from my screen!!! Would those clouds be classed a lenticular?
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. I am not looking at it now, but I tend to doubt it. Lenticular clouds usually are circular and convex (I think). Think of a volcano and a ring around it like a giant contact lens. But once again, I am most likely wrong. CUOTO
