It's discouraging how the space-sim genre is simultaneously so barren and also so over-saturated with nebulous "Upcoming Future Early Access Alpha Proof-of-Concept" games that seemingly go nowhere. At least X4's upcoming 7.0 update is looking good from what I've seen from their beta-branch, and Everspace 2 is still receiving love from its development team.

I guess that is the problem, the genre is baren but with a lot of people that want something very specific from their dream space game, so they try to make their own. but they will always be niche, and there is no running from that.

@@danilooliveira6580 I really miss the tight linear space games like some of the Wing Commander or Tachyon. As soon as I hear the word procedural, I get very sad.
@ThrobbGoblin

@@danilooliveira6580 I think a lot of these developers deliberately make their games even more niche just because they don't want to be compared to the Star Citizen- or at least what Star Citizen is supposedly going to be in a decade or two. Take Underspace for example, it's supposed to be a straightforward all-encompassing space game like Freelancer was back in the day... but someone decided that they should market their game as the "Giant Spooky Monsters In Space" game, which makes it feel 'different for the sake of being different'.

Where its a flight game, getting out of your ship, exploring your ship and outposts/cities, minming, cargo, salvage, fps all wrapped up in the best looking graphics around.. Also the longest running Alpha in history and probably the most ever invested into a game at the same time..

I'm really skeptical of In The Black. Originally they were saying in their Kickstarter that it would be released in 2018 with an alpha in 2017. There's a pinned Tweet from them saying Early Access is about to come out... which is 24 months old. I hope I'm wrong as the game looks great, but they have shown themsleves repeatedly to not be credible. I'd be totally shocked at this point if this game ever comes out.

I remember the battlecruiser 3000AD game. It was a very exciting concept. But not very well done. I've always wanted to run some capital ship in a dynamic sandbox game. Crews, Passengers, fighter squads, marines, rpg elements, ship upgrades, resource management, away missions, strategic, political and tactical decision, Is there any title that tick these boxes. Upcoming or existing? Planet prospector looks cool, though still very rough around the edges.

They all look pretty neat, but Age of Space actually kind of does it for me. I'm always looking for anything that might focus on commanding one capital ship, in real time or turn based, but in three dimensional space. There's a lot of good strategy games with fleets of various sizes, or fighter/small craft scale, but I don't know that I've ever seen anyone do a good job with game play that's build around managing one large ship.

I like how Elite Dangerous is the only one with uninspired ship explosions. Although, the most impressive explosion for a seemingly fusion reactor type of vehicle was Mech Assault on Xbox original lol. They'd go critical and you'd see rays of light coming out of the seams and cracks and a huge, orbed explosion resulted, which could make other nearby mechs go critical and explode and buildings crumble. Elite be like "crackle, snap...poof!" Not unlike Rice Crispies, or, okay...maybe more like shooting a steam engine train.

It's looking grim considering some recent updates. They've been relatively silent over the past couple years since the launch of their disastrous Odyssey DLC, only to come back and announce the "first new ship in years", and follow it up by announcing that players will be able to purchase ships with real money. I'd recommend looking elsewhere for "future proof" experiences.

They're planning to add more ships and have already added the Python Mk II, however, the Mk II is currently only accessible by spending 16250 ARX. It will be available for in game currency in early August, but this has caused some controversy. While there is some reason for complaint, I get the sense that they are just trying to keep Elite alive by adding some new revenue streams, so I myself think it's hard to blame them. @@danilooliveira6580 Excellent news, thanks. Similar to the goals of 'Astrox Imperium' then.

@@SirSavesALot1977 you know what. I may have confused the two, I think that is the one I was thinking about. not going to complain about the "EVE singleplayer" genre getting more competition though, specially since this one seem to have more fleet/empire management aspects to it that are more my jam.

@@danilooliveira6580 No worries, we need more single player EVE games. :) I was keeping my fingers crossed for the "Limit Theory" game earlier; that would have been a perfect single player EVE game, but it was unfortunately abandoned due to the developers health problems. The project became too big for him. I'm actually surprised (but happy) that the single developer for "Astrox Imperium" is still working on it.

It's 2024 and these games look amateurishly awful. Might be good games, but the poor visual style kills all immersion for me.

Well said. Though we'll never see Star Citizen actually released, it DESTROYS all of these games in the graphics / realism departments. Why we can't have a realistic space game with realistic space travel, realistic planets (with correct sizes), realistic combat, is beyond me.

There's so many of these "impressive" space games that just die 2 months, i really don't hold any excitement for them anymore. What's the point of supporting video games that will never reach beyond their niche and are just filled with empty universes

Lackluster does not even begin to describe what is hailed here. BORING. The same old thing. What I cannot wrap my head around is why no studio ever had the business acumen to create a classic Battlestar Galactica space game. IT WOULD SELL LIKE HOT CAKE. Let me know who's 'game' and I'll set up a Kickstarter for it and attract some devs!

These are B to C rated games, IMO.

Bleak outlook then... these all look utterly terrible, flawed concepts and dire 'resource management'... I don't want glorified spreadheets and data tracking... give me a good flight model, interesting story and campaign and forget the rest... a game shouldn't be a job... none of those games look fun or engaging

All of these games look identical. There's nothing new or interesting in the space game world. It's all just yet another dogfight sim.
