Chaorlais cattle are wonderful. Years ago, like 50 or so, friends raised them and I would buy a half of a half of a butchered steer every year to have to feed my four boys. It was so lean and had a very rich flavor. They were grass fed, in the days before it was "the thing" and because they mature to butchering weight much earlier and so were much more cost effective. Congratulations. edit: They also are great milkers, used four gallons a week of raw milk from the same herd. Lots of cream to make cream biscuits for Sunday morning breakfast or have in coffee, etc.

We had a Charolais bull about 20 years ago after that we only had black angus bulls. His genes is so strong we still have solid white calves being born til this day.

Suggestion for new cow name... Since Charlet is a French word and the cattle breed has a long French history Antoinette is the first name I thought of starting with an 'A' for one cow SO French!😁Adele and Aimee are also fabulous French names. 🥰

Antoinette is very old fashioned, even Annette is not used except by people in their 70's. Annie is more commonly used A name in French (Canada).

@@TinaP1234 my grandmother's name was Antionette Pearl, born 1883, and she went by Nettie Pearl (from a Florida frontier family, if you can imagine that!) I am blessed that my mother did not insist on giving me that ancestral name, although I think it is charming. There was also an Emphajema on my father's side. Dodged that bullet, also.

The opening and closing scenes were absolutely breath taking and the white cows are a wonderful surprise addition to the farm. Still love "Clair de Lune." Learned to play it when I was young taking lessons and I still play it to this day. Went perfectly with the shots of the snowy farm. The new cows look wonderful - can't wait to see what the crosses will look like.

Morgan I know the struggle was real to get the new faucet installed but I think the overall operation of the farm will be better at least on the water side. Just too bad you can't harvest some of that snow goodness into drinking water. Good to see you are getting an appreciate amount of snow.

Love to see the new cattle! I'd say the quickest way to get your new cows acclimated to you would be to have your neighbor (who raised them) come over and call the cows over to both of you and have him explain to them that this is Morgan, their new owner, and that he's safe. I'm sure the cows are wondering why they haven't seen their generational caretaker. When they see their old owner is friendly with you, things will quickly resolve.

He was over and he was right there with the cattle (it's in the video), they didn't seem keen on coming over to him either. He might have large herds and be more hands off so they don't know him well. Also cows don't know english lol so explaining the situation means nothing to them.

You hear about the epic storms covering the country, but seeing brings the phenomena to sight. Here in the South you would probably think our 40° plus temps are warm, comparatively, but thats cold for us! Hasn't snowed here since 2018, but we aren't really set up for snow too much. Our snow plows are for beach renourishment. Congratulations on the new cows!

My father, who'd tried farming in the late 1940s, always kept an eye out on agricultural news. So he took us one Sunday in the early 60s to see this *new* breed of beef cows - so far that had consisted principally of Aberdeen Angus (black cows). These new cows were very impressive and looked like giants! (BTW, In Quebec, they are called ChaROlais cattle)

I think it’s because everybody like the look of them, Scottish Highland cows are/ fluffy cows are very popular. People love the look of them mainly so that’s possibly why the price is up. I’ve seen a decent amount of videos of people getting one sadly, the others many luckily for socialization! But yeah they seem to be very popular right now so makes since their price has gone up

My Five Cents …. Get seedlings for lupini beans that you can drop between your rows of chestnut trees. Portuguese from Azores used to feed their cows with the beans and the who plant. Richest in fat milk you could get. The beans actually, when ripe , can be conserved in salt water brine in a jar and make for a perfect beer snack. You can get a hold of them on their grocery stores in Fall River, New Bedford , or East Providence.

My dad raised charolais for several years. They were huge, especially the bulls. They were actually so gentle, even the bulls. I missed them when dad changed to black Angus. Enjoy them.

Awesome! Congrats on this new addition. However, I wonder if you will still get the same price for the beef. Given that they are not of the "special" Scottish Highlander breed. You might want to be careful with breeding them and creating hybrids.

@MorganGold excellent choice to add to your herd! I know you ended up choosing them due to the HL market not being buyer friendly currently, but I think it ended up being a much better addition to your herd! You have HL bull, and HL females already to produce more, but you are also limited as you've decided not to keep the HL heifers on farm that you produce. Adding cows and heifers that are not HL allows you to keep those heifers you do produce, as the COI (coefficient of inbreeding) will be quite low since its across breeds. For beef production, this should be perfect. I also hope to see you add at least one or two milking cows this winter (with calves). Even if you just let the calves get all the milk for now, it again would be another way of improving your herd and adding a lot of value. With your plan to have pigs this year.. a few milking cows to feed extra milk and byproducts too would be huge, as well as the planned meat birds. Soaking their grain in extra milk, whey, or skim milk is a great way of promoting fast growth and weight gain. As for names: Tan/Buff cows that start with A's... I'd go with Alma for the heifer calf, and Alta for the biggest female, and Almond for the other. Names are fitting for their breed and coloring for sure, sound nice, and fit your A theme.
