I think what is happening in the States is that the beekeepers who use OA have moved on from what the label says and have found a dose that works for them. Very interesting study, Humberto. I have been considering Thymol in my Apiary.
@ToBeeOrNotToBeHoney8 ай бұрын
And the Api-Bioxal label only mentions amount per dose per hive, but not the frequency of the dose, and recently they changed the label based on the new EPA rules so treatment is allowed in all season and with honey supers on. Technically you could treat daily with the label dose. The bigger problem is that many beekeepers are not using Api-Bioxal from Veto-Pharma, but just generic wood bleach. Essentially it is the same product, considering how Oxalic Acid is made it is pretty simple, but using anything other than an approved EPA product can get you in trouble. I am using Thymol on one of my hives, but I don't really think it is as effective as other treatments...

There's no agendas in essential oils, we use them for ages. Very natural but potent, be carefull or you will kill the bees or the queen will run away. 2 drops under the nest in a paper every 2 or 3 days in sunny weather without wind. The best is to read scientific experiments from France. Different oils though.

Oxalic acid massive dose kills some mites, no mention of also decimating the brood and Queen too? What about growing a lot more wildflowers with some herbs like thyme and oregano varieties hedges amongst hives or where hives are going to be? That plus what I'm seeing on "brood breaks" / artificially splitting / to simulate a swarm might be an interesting combination of methods so we don't get synthetic chemicals in our honey and damaging the bees long term just because some company sponsored a chemical that kills mites and didn't mention how savage it is on the bees too.

Thymol from Thyme may also be effective once the given strength could be determined. Perhaps potted thyme around the hive could also help by means of deterring pests? If bees collected from massive fields of Oregano or Thyme they could develop adherence and immunity over time.

What approach was used to gather the total population of the mites in each hive? I ask this because the results of the experiment were % death rate. Unless the experiment was based on accurate population metrics the % of mites that died during the experiment would be false. I don’t believe the scientists had actual population counts and were instead using data which estimated the number of mites in an average bee colony. If so then what is the known variation across the colonies in respect to size and mite populations? There is much more analysis that must be understood before accepting the results of the experiment outcomes. Three kinds of lies; Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics.

It is over 40 years that we cook a big butch of "tea" using around 10 different plants that grow here in the Mediterranean and spray bottle bees with it instead of smoking them.. oregano and mint are a big part of that tea.. because they grow everywhere here all year around. Why would be ilegal the oxalic acid? Oxalic and formic acids are both very efficient , natural cheap and leave no trace
@ToBeeOrNotToBeHoney8 ай бұрын
Currently the only EPA approved version of Oxalic Acid is from Veto-Pharma called Api-Bioxal. Any other source of Oxalic Acid is not legal (in the US) to treat bees with. And you may only treat according to the label on the actual produce you have in your hands, I.e. old product does not get to use the new label. Api-Bioxal is very expensive compared to illegal Oxalic Acid even though they are likely the same product considering how easy oxalic acid is to make, however Api-Bioxal is tested for heavy metals, where as other products don't make that claim...

@@ToBeeOrNotToBeHoney Luckily enough I am from Romania and have bought once some ten gallons of formic acid and the oxalic acid can be found in every hardware store , it is used to clean darkened oak hard floor, and costs some 6 dollars two pounds
@m1nfy8 ай бұрын
Its a similar situation in UK. There are limited sources of Vet (VMD) approved oxalic acid. Whilst the core ingredient is the same, the Apibioxil, has passed tests to ensure there are no contaminates that could enter the food chain. Those tests cost money, hence the price difference.

The ultimate solution will be found through breeding for mite resistant traits. Using chemicals just perpetuates weak genetics. The problem is the grants for research are all for chemicals. Most of the breeding experiments are done by private individuals which are generally coordinated. However, progress is steadily being made.
