Army Engineers, Pilots and Comms specialists are key in getting the new Apache Echo-Model off the ground. What role are you most interested in?
Fifty Apache AH-64E Version 6 aircraft have been purchased from the United States to provide a state-of-the-art attack aviation capability that will be a key element in how the Army fights in the coming decades, as set out in the Future Soldier programme.

For anyone that doesn't understand, in America as well as our brothers and sisters in the U.K., the helicopter belongs to the crew that maintain it, the pilot just borrows it from time to time

As one of your American brothers I’m grateful to see our British brothers in arms flying our attack helicopters and buying so many F-35 JSF’s , our sensor fusion will be a game changer accross all allied forces! Norway and Finland buying 65 F35’s , AH-64Es and newest Abrams block Main battle tanks, all sharing the sensor fusion capabilities that will make the next big war like nothing the worlds ever seen.

Agreed, still terrifying to the enemy!!!! Can’t imagine what it’s replacement will bring to the table but like the A10 and it’s new sensor and weapon upgrades that will take it into 2060 and beyond,..I’ve got the feeling the Apache will co to use to be upgraded and around far beyond that!

No, they didn't. These are absolutely off-the-shelf E model Apaches. HIDASS is gone, as are all the UK specific systems of the AH-1. All comms and defensive aids are exactly as anyone else's E models. RTM322 engines are gone, back to GE T700. It makes them completely compatible with US Army Apaches, but the loss of HIDASS is the one thing that stands out to me. You'll note the pilot covered *nearly* all the upgrades, but pointedly didn't mention defensive aids.

@CHRISTIAN KNIGHT HIDAS is British design by BAE Systems it a very good countermeasure system to stop missile hiting the helicopter it that good the computer system fire the right countermeasure for the right missile. That why not one has not been shot down in Afghanistan. I always say the countermeasure defence system is just as important at the fire power it self.

@@RokeJulianLockhart.s13ouq contracts with Boeing basically. The Apache options on the table were a Leonardo based custom E with British specific systems, or off-the-shelf from Boeing. Boeing's offer came in lower specifically because it was off-the-shelf and beat Leonardo out. So on the same way the AH-1 were bought to Yeovil as tadpoles to be completed locally, so these aircraft are being sent back to Boeing to be fed through the same line that remanufactured D models for everyone else are.

Does the new model have the uprated Rolls-Royce engine from the previous (British) version? or have we bought them "off the shelf" from the USA? Has the USA upgraded their engines to the British version?

Utterly standard E model Apaches. There are no significant UK systems on it. T700 engines, all US comms and defensive systems. The AH-1 had lots of UK content. These are straight off of the US production line.

@@dmanton300 Ah Ok. I was asking because I'm currently reading "Apache" by Ed Macy, and he says that in Afghanistan British Apaches always used their Longbowradar with a full weapons and fuel load because the engines could take it, but US Apaches weren't able to do that as standard because their engines lacked the power that the Rolls-Royce engines afforded. I think he said that the British engines gave 30% more power and torque, although I can't remember the exact figure given. He also said that the British Apaches could easily get you back to base with no oil in the gearbox, but a US Apache's gearbox would quickly seize with no oil.

@@Aeronaut1975 the rtm322 did have more power than the t700 initially used in the D model, and was the reason ours were the only Apaches regularly using the radar in Afghanistan. But the British Apache never received the uprated transmission to fully harness the RTMs power. It could fly at higher sustained outputs than the t700 but never really use all the power available. The T700-701D has more power than previous 700s , even if less than the 322. It'll be interesting to see if we end up in places hot again how we operate the E model. Dutch upgrades continue to fly without radar for the large part, as do the us army ones. After RR dropped involvement with the rtm engine, there was no overwhelming reason to keep it for the AH-64E, especially as the MOD was looking for an off-the-shelf buy. And it does release over one hundred engines for spares and support for our Merlin fleet, so those RTMs won't be wasted. I'm on the fence about our AH-64E. It is a much more capable platform than the D, but I do worry about the complete lack of any customisation for our needs, and especially the loss of HIDASS.

The ground crew are paid peanuts yet are one of the most qualified soldiers with multiple trades just to run the gig. But never get chance to do other courses as ground crew numbers are under manned. You can't change corps once in being a protected regiment. It's a rich flying club and the promotion is slow until you hit Staff Sgt.

Leonardo had no input to these Apaches at all. There is basically no UK content in them. Whether that's a good or bad thing is open to debate and time will tell. The ONLY difference I can see between our E and US Army Es is that during manufacture US Army get sugar scoop exhaust fairings, our retain the rearward facing black holes.
