Sorry to be watching your video a week late but we were out camping in our AS. I am loving a book that is giving me endless inspiration when painting landscapes. Wish I could post a pic of it. It is called Landscape Painting Now: From Pop Abstraction to New Romanticism by Todd Broadway and Barry Schwabsky. I have spent hours looking through this book. It is amazing to discover so many painters I never knew. Hope you find this helpful. The Carson book is pedantic but is of it’s time. It was first published in 1929. What is amazing is that so many of the concepts he discusses still ring true almost 100 years later.

Beautiful video as always! Your home looks lovely. I did read Rembrandt is in the Wind. Such a good book! I thought the preface and first chapter were spectacular. Sometimes I have had thoughts that, as a Christian, the time I spend on art endeavors is wasted. But when I am creative, I do feel like it is God creating through me! I enjoyed the whole book. And would have loved to keep it. But I live in an RV and travel all the time, so I "loaned" it to my brother. Since then I have selfishly worried that I'll never see it again. Lol. Now I have put three other books you talked about in my Amazon cart to save for later. I love books! But no room in the camper for them and Kindle doesn't cut it with art books. Ha!

My husband got me a couple of very academic art books for Christmas...one was Josef Alber's much lauded "Interaction of Color,," 50th Anniversary Edition. I can't recall exactly what the other one was right now. While I'm sure the Albers' book was everything it is praised for, I spent a bit of time with it and just knew I couldn't really use it. As I gently told my husband, if I was taking a class and this was the textbook, then I'm sure I"d be OK, and learn much from it, but absorbing it all on my own was probably not going to happen. I have what may be called a mild processing delay that primarily affected my learning of math when I was in school, but it still generally causes some delays in "getting it" or getting it as quickly as others may. Fortunately, I'm a strong writer and that's what got me through my Bachelor's degree, (communication.) At any rate, for books that require a lot of intellectualizing about a subject like art, that I express by feeling and intuition, (and like many artists, I have a very good eye for balance, color schemes and structure...but I still need help sometimes.) With what I read as "overly intellectual" I will start zoning out pretty quickly. When I run into more technical or advanced problems with my art or maybe I need to think much bigger, I will just look up what I think will help me and also watch more advanced artists who have achieved in the area that may present a weakness or problem for me.

Carlson and Payne’s books are definite must-reads, but you do slog through the language since they were written so long ago. I learned a lot from them. It will be interesting to see how they translate with your style. I splurged big time on two of Richard Schmid’s books - Alla Prima II and The Landscape. Expensive, but absolutely incredible classics for my style of painting. Schmid passed away recently, but fortunately you can still purchase the books from his website.
