“Being a creative person and living a creative life has far less to do with creating perfect art and more to do with being present and showing up. Let’s start where we are with what we have.” Jeanne Oliver That’s one of the best observations I’ve ever heard an artist make. This is great. Now this is the right way to approach things.

I'm just watching this (love all your videos) but I'm overwhelmed with the info about your puppy, Cooper...my puppy, Brady had the same exact thing a few weeks ago! It was horrible. He too was put on pain meds for his arthritis. I felt like i had an infant again as he slept on my chest like a baby for two nights. When he wasn't sleeping with me patting his belly to give him some relief, i was walking the night away - every half hour all night long for two long nights. It was pouring out of him...poor baby. After four visits to the vet in five days, anti-diarrhea meds, anti-biotics, pain meds, and special food he is on the mend and feeling so much better. It took two full weeks. I 'm so glad Cooper is feeling better. thank you for sharing your life and creativity with us all!

Love that you’re embracing the coloured pencils! There’s something so satisfying about the sound of them scratching across the sketchbook page. 😊 The texture in the painting is lovely and I’m swooning over the little bits of pink underpaint coming through! 😍

Bless Coop’s and your hearts. Being sick is the worst. Those little grippies on Copper’s nails…great idea!! I’ve never seen them. My mom has tile floors and her older doggy was having trouble getting around as she got older, so she put carpet floor runners down. They helped immensely. Doggy was able to go throughout without touching slick floors. Just a thought. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 for health. ❤️

Ruminate! What cows do😉 I so understand what you are going through with Cooper. I too have an older dog (golden retriever13 1/2 years) who has been having some issues. I am just loving on him as much as I can, because I know my remaining time with him is short, My heart will be broken when I lose him. I did listen to your interview with Jeanne, and loved your honesty and openness. It is true about perfectionism being about pride. As you said, the things we worry about other people thinking, they barely give it a thought. Once we get that, it is so freeing! As for your painting, that background is so delicious! The colors and the cats! Makes my heart and eyeballs happy! As a Christian, I also appreciated your comments about The Lord. If I keep Him in the center of my life, things are so much easier.

Hi Sandi! First thing I noticed was your high ‘80s pony! LOL, looks good! I also listened to your podcast and have to share that it was really helpful and insightful. I struggle with perfectionism and it holds me back from even the simplest things. When you said it’s about self worship, it was like a lightening rod - because really, who do I think is even paying attention? Nobody! Everyone’s too busy worrying about their own stuff to notice the imperfections I see in myself and my work. Thank you for always being so open and honest with us, and for letting us in to your life the way you do. Hugs to Coop as well! ❤️

Had to comment right away, even while the video is still playing on my TV.... through my tears... how can I feel so emotional for a dog I've never met? I guess cuz I've been through that same stuff with a few of my furry kids over the years, including a cat currently. He is well loved by a LOT of people, obviously, and I hope that helps you and Grady through this season. My goodness what an adorable boy Cooper has always been! God bless you, all three of you! Oh, and the rest of video was fun! 😊!! Hang in there...sending Cooper virtual hugs

I especially benefitted from "The Lies of Perfectionism with Sandi Hester" interview. It has honestly moved me to tears every time I listen to it. Your videos have become such a tremedous blessing in my life. Thank you. You, Grady and Cooper have been in my prayers. Hey! Maybe you could make a plastic pencil bag for a limited pallette challenge. And or a limited pallette you like. Or, you could put together one for drawing in the woods, the beach, urban sketch, etc. That's cool. I think I might make one. I think it would be cool to ask my husband to pick like 5 pencils, any colors from my stash of color pencils, then I HAVE to do the drawing with only those colors. Cool too!

I think he expected that from me growing up. And I just picked that trait up myself. But the podcast really did resonate with me. I was very interested in what you had to say about Jesus. wonderful video as always. So hard emotionally to deal with our pups when they are old. Our last one it was clean up duty for a year. As far as getting up from floor I placed a lot of yoga mats around on our wood floors which helped a lot. Love all the creative energy you have. Reminds me of my younger yrs as an artist :) As a cautious note be aware that when using your fingers to push paint around you are absorbing toxins through your skin. Off the top of my head the cobalts in particular , there are others and they are cancer causing. Some colors are harmless. It took decades before they realized artists who used dyes were exposing themselves needlessly to cancer causing agents and getting cancer. I think they have X's and warnings on all the paint tubes now that have those components.. Transdermal is something to be aware of. Just thinking of you. xo

@@sandihester You do not know how upset I was hearing you talk about finger-painting with watercolors. I have had to stop a few times when watching because of it! Watercolor and oil paint pigments are the easiest to absorb through the skin. Acrylic has a bit of a barrier because of the polymers. The entire decorative painting industry had a wake-up call in the 80s when a couple of the more well known teachers were hospitalized l for some time because they had not been careful with skin contact. We actually used to point our brushes AFTER washing them thoroughly... in our mouths! You do not need one more problem!

HI Sandi, I was sad to hear Cooper is not well. I have been caring for two dogs with arthritis for several years. One just turned 19 years old. We have tried everything:CBD oil (Ellevet at Cornell University), Acupuncture home visits, and different meds. Here is what worked for us the best. We got a stroller and a dog support belt to get around this past year. For meds, I have not given in to the often prescribed Rimadyl/Carprofen/Medicam drug because it can be toxic for some dogs with immediate devastating consequences. We do use Gabapenten and Galliprant to alleviate inflammation and pain. I have recently started giving Adequan injections. The toe grips helped for awhile. We gained several years with the above treatment. My oldest girl is now dependent on me to move her, but she still eats heartily and enjoys her strolls. Have hope!

Ya I’ll go listen to that podcast… I’m interested to hear what you guys think about it. It’s the biggest problem I have is that voice in my head. It takes the fun out of it. When I was part of a watercolor Facebook group, mainly for beginners, way too many people would post their work then pick it apart and feel like they failed. I did it myself a couple times but then I saw what it looked like when others did it and never did it again. It didn’t stop the voice in my head I just don’t ever let it come out of my mouth. And anyway who cares? It’s so tempting to do it but when I’m on the other end the last thing I want to hear is all the things that are bad about the piece that someone created. Anyway the next morning it usually doesn’t look that bad after all 😂 Many paintings that I’ve done I’d get to the middle, get that familiar sinking feeling, feel like I hated it and myself for not doing better, have to force myself to finish, only to find out that a couple days later I actually quite liked it.

I looooove the "polka tigers" (what are they called??). The background looks so gorgeous! I'm so glad to hear that Cooper is doing better. Those nails are fancy. Look forward to the podcast! Thank you for another week of inspiration. Edit: LEOPARDS. Had to scroll down in the comment section 😂

i started allergy shots 1.5 years ago. after 2 months my hayfever all but disappeared. i could go neck deep in grasses and things that would normally be a killer. Nowadays i don't have any seasonal allergies of any type... all gone. btw, My allergies were very bad compared to most ppl's. 1 shot a week now, but next year it goes to once every 2 weeks then longer breaks. I highly suggest getting the shots.

Ok I’m done listening to the podcast. Here are my thoughts. One of the reasons I even wanted to start painting in the first place is that I wanted the energy of god to come thru me then out of me and into the painting. To bring the light and the energy of god into this world thru something I created. But it would be me and god doing it not just me. It didn’t really have to do with anyone outside of me, other people. Our world is such a dark luciferian place it can use all the help we can give it in whatever our own unique way is. I just wanted to spread his energy freely. Instead the nasty voice of perfectionism and beating myself up spread its ugly energy all over everything. I remember the day I stopped I thought to myself, if this is the way it’s going to be then I’m not doing it. Everything about this is all wrong. Every since then I have felt blocked. I have painted some… but it doesn’t flow freely. I didn’t know it would turn into this I didn’t see it coming. I think one of the most valuable things about your videos is that you made a concerted effort to not go there. If you thing you’re going there you immediately make it messy…lol You do whatever it takes to not go there. Even if it means going into places nobody else understands. You will throw everything to the wind to not go there. To not be constrained or confined by it. That takes so much bravery and I don’t see anybody else doing it. Then you turn around and make some of the most lovely paintings. Those three that were sitting behind you on the back wall… the big one and two smaller ones.. I kept seeing them there, thinking to myself.. wish I could have those… I love all three… how’s it that no one had pryed those out of her hands.. The other thing I notice is your exuberance for adventure. Here it is snowing in the middle of winter and your excited to go out and paint 😂 and then I hear you say recently that you have health problems… diabetes.. I found myself thinking, sheesh, she is always finding happy. Even in spite of have physical problems. She looks for happy. That’s special.
