Re: The Synderverse Cult and their reaction to the new Star War Films. It's important to recognize that the subversion in the two franchises did extremely different things: In Star Wars, the subversion put women and people of colour at the forefront and the anti-franchise legacy message in the mouth of a villain showcasing toxic masculinity. Whereas in the Synderverse, they turned the heroes into pillars of the values of toxic masculinity. That's what the cult actually cares about: toxic masculinity. It's why I would argue that Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice didn't work: the fundamental ideas driving superheroes in general and especially Superman and Batman are in direct conflict with the values of toxic masculinity.

While I was a tiny bit disappointed that Bob didn't go into more speculation as to what the film is about like he teased at the end of Part I, (I think he is more than likely saving that for when the trailer drops tomorrow so he can make a Part III to this Big Picture subseries), I have to agree. Chills and goosebumps after hearing that new remix and/or arrangement of the John Williams Superman theme (whichever it is, does it really matter, it's beautiful and emotionally affecting either way?!) I think that James Gunn is POTENTIALLY going to succeed where both Bryan Singer and Zack Snyder failed, and make a new Superman movie that is in the same league, if not, BETTER, than the 1978 Richard Donner classic. I remember when I saw the trailers for Man of Steel a decade ago, and I tried to convice myself that Man of Steel was a great Superman movie for the three years between its release and the release of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which made the scales of just how bad and flawed Man of Steel was in retrospect fall from my eyes. Given how amazing the Man of Steel trailers were (I still think the Man of Steel trailers still hold up as objectively great film marketing material, even if the film didn't deliver on what those trailers were advertising), maybe James Gunn's Superman will not just give me the best Superman film since Richard Donner's 1978 classic, but also the Superman film that the Man of Steel trailers were advertising?! If James Gunn's Superman delivers on BOTH OF THOSE ASPECTS, I am saying something very bold: James Gunn's Superman may actually achieve what The Dark Knight, The Avengers, Black Panther, and Joker failed to do and be the first comic book film to be both nominated for and win the Best Picture Oscar, as well as HOPEFULLY AGAINST ALL HOPE, a Best Director Oscar nomination and/or win for James Gunn, with Gunn successfully becoming the Peter Jackson of comic book superhero films. I like the bit about things that are synonymous with Superman that didn’t originate with the comics, in particular listing Kryptonite among those things. To think, one of the major pillars of Superman’s mythos, something that people use to describe a character’s one weakness in media, actually came from “The Adventures of Superman” radio serial in 1943. Heck, even Superman’s ability to fly came from the Fleischer cartoons; originally Superman just jumped long distances, but they didn’t want to have to animate Superman landing repeatedly. It’s all fascinating stuff, and it’s why I’m fascinated with long-running serialized media, and how they add stuff, change, and evolve over time.

Superman is the standard for the super hero, and the secret of his character has always been country boy that wants to help people that just happens to be the most powerful alien on Earth. Man of Steel and everything that followed were obsessed with reimagining, subverting, and everything but telling that basic and essential story for Superman. His default and reason for being. Will James Gunn make the perfect Superman movie, where we get a chance to have an aspirational character that speaks to the better aspects of our nature? No idea, but this is literally just a teaser. Superman was the first movie that my Dad took me to as a child. This hits right in the heart for me. If they play this in the movie I will be sobbing. Heck I was tearing up reading the comments in this video when someone was quoting Jor El from the movies.

I noticed the Zimmerman stuff more than the Williams score. Regardless? That music is beautiful and so PERFECT for a Superman movie, especially the one Gunn seems planning to make: it conveys wonder and awe and . . . Gentleness.

I think that one of the flaws of so many of the DC films has been the deeply cynical worldview. These have been rough times, for me and many others. I want some optimism.

Hi Bob! Long-time fan, infrequent commenter. Just wanna say I’m really excited to see your reaction to this trailer. I dislike BVS so strongly that watching your content around the time of it’s release was a kind of catharsis, with RTB:BVS being in my frequent rotation because of how throughly it dismantles and analyses its failure. It determines cause of death and performs the autopsy. But now it’s time for Superman to live again, to truly live. And it will be equally cathartic to get your take on that.

personally not a fan of the red briefs, but I do agree that the lower body does need something to break up the blue and the briefs are the only thing that's been tried that actually looks decent.

I'm not sure I've seen a James Gunn piece where the music - particularly the needle drops - weren't just *chef's kiss* perfect. If a riff on the John Williams theme gets used in the film, it is going to be at the perfect moment and there will be many many 45+ year olds with tears pouring from their eyes unashamedly ... and I'll be one of them.

I have will queue up the opening credits to Superman 1 or 2 from time to time. I love the music. I love the effect of the letters whooshing by. And yes, Superman is an inspirational aspirational good guy who reminds us that being strong doesn't mean being a jerk to people. If anything thing it is about looking out for those who are vulnerable or in need.

The CW superman series set a great precedent on how a GOOD modern day superman story can look like. Even if Gunns superman movie bombs (which i doubt) we at least have some good superman to fall back on

3:10 Funny you say that. The thing is Hans Zimmer's Superman theme is essentially a reimagined version of John Williams' theme too. Granted, he changed it so much that you won't botice unless you pay extremely close attention to the melody, citting through the changes in pretty much everything else. Bit it's there.

Funny I was just reading this: "The film’s score, composed by John Murphy, will include nods to John Williams’ classic Superman theme while creating something new. “It’s not a soundtrack, so it’s not about the songs,” Gunn noted. “It’s much, much more of a score film.” Source: TheWrap

Let's just freeze Bob in this moment in time, where he has this level of hope. I'm not saying this movie will be bad or anything. Just that the reality of an entire movie will have a hard time measuring up to pure emotion. I really hope it does though.

I can get behind that. Still, the words of Grant Morrison seem apropos here: "The vital component of beauty is its mortality."

I've always been annoyed that while James Bond, Indiana Jones, Jaws, and Star Wars kept and cherished their iconic musical themes, with Superman, they're always reinventing the wheel. I know royalties can play a part when it comes to bring it to television and animation projects but i still remember the goosebumps o got when Christopher Reeves guest starred on Smallville and they introduce him with the part of the theme. Hearing this uptake on the theme here and the trailer really gives me so much hope and optimism for this movie. It unreal

I would not classify myself as a Superman fan. I have seen none of the Christopher Reeves movies, nor the new tv series. But I would say that theough the DC animated universe from the 90s and 00s, I have an appreciation for what Superman is supposed to be. Which is why I didn't care for the Injustice or the Snyder versions. All that being said, that music cue brought tears to my eyes and actually gave me hope. Trust in James Gunn.

Honestly I never fully got why films stayed away from using familiar themes and such, with old characters like these new elements get attached all the time it can't all be from issue 1 of the comic. Batman TAS used the Danny Elfman theme despite not being in the same universe and it further solidified it, I don't see why Micheal Giacchino had to dance around.

I think they do it for the same reasons they always change fundamental things in adaptations, Hollywood people are insecure and need to put their fingerprints on something or they're subconsciously admitting that someone else, possibly in a different medium, is better at storytelling than them.
