In this day and age, I think a we need a classic Superman movie again. We need an aspirational hero. "You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. There's a reason Williams' scores are so beloved. He makes themes that "feel" right. Right for the genre, right for the story, right for the character, whatever. He's really, really good at it. I don't know if this is the right crowd for this reference, but does anyone else go to symphony concerts where they play movie scores? Williams' scores put you INSTANTLY in the headspace of "this movie, that character, this scene". It's a gift, AND the voice of experience.

Re: The Synderverse Cult and their reaction to the new Star War Films. It's important to recognize that the subversion in the two franchises did extremely different things: In Star Wars, the subversion put women and people of colour at the forefront and the anti-franchise legacy message in the mouth of a villain showcasing toxic masculinity. Whereas in the Synderverse, they turned the heroes into pillars of the values of toxic masculinity. That's what the cult actually cares about: toxic masculinity. It's why I would argue that Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice didn't work: the fundamental ideas driving superheroes in general and especially Superman and Batman are in direct conflict with the values of toxic masculinity.

I always took Superman as a rejection of absolute power corrupts absolutely. That's what makes him interesting. He's the most powerful man in the world and at heart he's just a kid from Kansas trying to do the right thing. There's something they say about Batman in that if you can't see Batman helping a child, you haven't written Batman. Well I think the Superman version is, if you're Superman would have second thoughts about getting a cat out of tree for a little girl, then you haven't written Superman.

Like it's popular cause the characters can't always punch their way out of a situation. They make alliances, they trick each other, one side gets the upper hand and then the other does and so on. While I was a tiny bit disappointed that Bob didn't go into more speculation as to what the film is about like he teased at the end of Part I, (I think he is more than likely saving that for when the trailer drops tomorrow so he can make a Part III to this Big Picture subseries), I have to agree. Chills and goosebumps after hearing that new remix and/or arrangement of the John Williams Superman theme (whichever it is, does it really matter, it's beautiful and emotionally affecting either way?!) I think that James Gunn is POTENTIALLY going to succeed where both Bryan Singer and Zack Snyder failed, and make a new Superman movie that is in the same league, if not, BETTER, than the 1978 Richard Donner classic. I remember when I saw the trailers for Man of Steel a decade ago, and I tried to convice myself that Man of Steel was a great Superman movie for the three years between its release and the release of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which made the scales of just how bad and flawed Man of Steel was in retrospect fall from my eyes. Given how amazing the Man of Steel trailers were (I still think the Man of Steel trailers still hold up as objectively great film marketing material, even if the film didn't deliver on what those trailers were advertising), maybe James Gunn's Superman will not just give me the best Superman film since Richard Donner's 1978 classic, but also the Superman film that the Man of Steel trailers were advertising?! If James Gunn's Superman delivers on BOTH OF THOSE ASPECTS, I am saying something very bold: James Gunn's Superman may actually achieve what The Dark Knight, The Avengers, Black Panther, and Joker failed to do and be the first comic book film to be both nominated for and win the Best Picture Oscar, as well as HOPEFULLY AGAINST ALL HOPE, a Best Director Oscar nomination and/or win for James Gunn, with Gunn successfully becoming the Peter Jackson of comic book superhero films. (YES, I KNOW I SOUND LIKE I'M GETTING WAY AHEAD OF MYSELF THERE AND GETTING CARRIED AWAY, BUT LET ME DREAM, DAMN IT!)

I like the bit about things that are synonymous with Superman that didn’t originate with the comics, in particular listing Kryptonite among those things. To think, one of the major pillars of Superman’s mythos, something that people use to describe a character’s one weakness in media, actually came from “The Adventures of Superman” radio serial in 1943. Heck, even Superman’s ability to fly came from the Fleischer cartoons; originally Superman just jumped long distances, but they didn’t want to have to animate Superman landing repeatedly. It’s all fascinating stuff, and it’s why I’m fascinated with long-running serialized media, and how they add stuff, change, and evolve over time.

I'm very optimistic about this. James Gunn has not had a miss in the superhero genre that I can remember. We'll get something ranging from a good movie to a masterpiece, and that's exactly what DC needs after the disaster that was everything after man of steel. Also, yeah, an honest to god good Superman movie will do big numbers, no matter what the Snyder fans say. It will hit like a truck for old fans like Bob and me and a whole lot of others, but casual fans? families looking for a good time with the kids? It will make a lot of money with that audience too

I'm not entirely sold on this. The John Williams theme is great, but using it tells me that James Gunn is relying heavily on nostalgia, and that didn't even work for Superman Returns. I'm highly skeptical- but very optimistic.

There has never been a bad casting choice for Superman. Cavill's Superman is only bad because of the take on the character and how he was used in the DCEU. Henry Cavill as a pure, one-to-one interpretation in a straight, authentic Superman movie would have been 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Zack Snyder is one of my favorite filmmakers, and I even liked what he did with Superman and the rest of the DCEU. But maybe its a combination of that and almost a decade of having more Snyder, Injustices and Homelanders than actual Superman, that seeing what Gunn is doing with Superman makes me not only excited, but feel hopeful and warm about a movie, which made me stop and realize that this is the first movie to come out in my lifetime (I'm 25) about Superman that actually makes me feel that.

Superman is the standard for the super hero, and the secret of his character has always been country boy that wants to help people that just happens to be the most powerful alien on Earth. Man of Steel and everything that followed were obsessed with reimagining, subverting, and everything but telling that basic and essential story for Superman. His default and reason for being. Will James Gunn make the perfect Superman movie, where we get a chance to have an aspirational character that speaks to the better aspects of our nature? No idea, but this is literally just a teaser. Making a massive hullabaloo over it other than commenting on what you see is more than a little pointless, good or ill. If people are too worked up over the previous vision of DCU to give this a chance, they will never accept anything that comes along anyway.

Hi Bob! Long-time fan, infrequent commenter. Just wanna say I’m really excited to see your reaction to this trailer. I dislike BVS so strongly that watching your content around the time of it’s release was a kind of catharsis, with RTB:BVS being in my frequent rotation because of how throughly it dismantles and analyses its failure. It determines cause of death and performs the autopsy. But now it’s time for Superman to live again, to truly live. And it will be equally cathartic to get your take on that.

I've always been annoyed that while James Bond, Indiana Jones, Jaws, and Star Wars kept and cherished their iconic musical themes, with Superman, they're always reinventing the wheel. I know royalties can play a part when it comes to bring it to television and animation projects but i still remember the goosebumps o got when Christopher Reeves guest starred on Smallville and they introduce him with the part of the theme. Hearing this uptake on the theme here and the trailer really gives me so much hope and optimism for this movie. It unreal

But I would say that theough the DC animated universe from the 90s and 00s, I have an appreciation for what Superman is supposed to be. Honestly I never fully got why films stayed away from using familiar themes and such, with old characters like these new elements get attached all the time it can't all be from issue 1 of the comic. Batman TAS used the Danny Elfman theme despite not being in the same universe and it further solidified it, I don't see why Micheal Giacchino had to dance around.
