This Blackstar almost certainly is a hybrid amp, which that Laney is when its solid-state boost is engaged; the Supro Delta King is similar to the Laney in that regard. I would add to your list the Bugera V Infinium (pick a wattage) on the low end, with the Orange Rocker 15 and the Peavey Classic II (pick a wattage) on the high end. With regard to preamp gain without solid-state assistance, I can only be certain of the top three: 1. EVH 5150 Iconic 2. Marshall DSL 3. Orange Rocker 15

Reverb and Only 2 valves? That's a dream
@Robstafarian
@Robstafarian Ай бұрын
I had hoped that this would be a late-'50s or early-'60s Fender circuit, as a few of those would have required only as many valves as this Blackstar has in it: Blackstar's trademark could be said to be "not enough preamp valves for the overdrive sound" because they make hybrid amps with solid-state phase inverters and glorified pedals as drive channels; the effects loop was my first clue that this would be more of the same from Blackstar, and the "drive channel" sounds more like a pedal than any of the Fender circuits which were candidates. I look forward to photos and/or videos of the internals.

On the topic of small valve combos versus a drummer, my Fender Pro Junior (15W, 10” speaker) has subbed one of the two Fender Hot Rods (40W, 12” speaker) usually used by the guitarists for several pub gigs recently (mic on the bass drum only and vocal PA) and passed with flying colours. In fact, a good recording from the last gig showed the Pro Junior was plenty loud enough and didn’t sound “small” compared to the Hot Rod. With careful placement and someone looking after the mix, these small amps are surprisingly good and a damn sight lighter to carry! I'm mainly on bass these days, but if I went back to guitar I'd be interested in this Blackstar for the extra features.
@fatsuperfly
@fatsuperfly Ай бұрын
Very true, it’s doable I think, one of my first bar gigs was rigged up like that. And the sound was pretty good, sometimes for smaller places, that mic combo for the drums and small amps just works great.
@TheStratpicker
@TheStratpicker Ай бұрын
@@fatsuperfly Indeed. We actually played a bar gig with a 95db limit recently, which was fully mic’d. The sound tech explained that stage volume should be low with strategically placed front of house speakers providing sufficient volume for the audience. Once we’d got used to the lack of “punch” on stage, (the drummer used rods) we went through our (southern/blues rock) set as usual and got very good feedback on the quality of sound from the audience. We prefer playing with less control, but it was a lesson in how restraint and a good tech can work.
@TheStratpicker
@TheStratpicker Ай бұрын
@@quantumbuddhist I agree, to keep up with a drummer the Pro Junior with my Strat you need to take it into the just breaking up zone, which suits me fine, but a clean tone monster it isn't.
@Robstafarian
@Robstafarian Ай бұрын
@@TheStratpicker 95dB is less than one watt with any typical, 12" guitar speaker and even some 10" speakers. If I knew I would need to be that quiet for some gigs, I would either get an Orange Rocker 15 head and a few cabs for versatility or run one of the recent Friedman valve preamp pedals and focus more on monitoring; a Synergy rig would bridge both schemes for more money, particularly the upcoming SYN-20IR lunchbox head.

@@Robstafarian Yes, plenty of options these days. It's the first time we've had to comply with a db limit. We're a bit old school, and like to see the amps on stage, so powered pedals make a lot of sense, with or without a dedicated cab, but...

Amps such as Katana and Blackstar TVP enable switching between "channels" where tone, gain and volume have been adjusted and saved. My idea is for valve amps to do this also do this to enable instant recall of dialled-in settings. This would provide greater flexibility and greater convenience to valve amps than having just one or two channels which demand that the musician has to remember settings or twiddle knobs between songs. Any amp manufacturer want to buy my idea? Blackstar, are you listening? I can visit and explain in person.
@Robstafarian
@Robstafarian Ай бұрын
No one buys ideas; do you want to do the work to invent such a circuit at the risk that it will not be innovative (through no fault of your own) and/or that no one will want to license or buy it from you? Developing this from scratch will take years of learning and skill development, including programming, which comes at the risk of severe injury or even death: the interiors of valve amps are not designed to keep ignorant people (no disrespect) safe. I invented an electric-guitar circuit almost a decade ago, following half a decade of intense research (mostly regarding how downstream equipment would be affected, which required me to learn how pretty much everything works), and my prototype very likely still is the only guitar in the world which can do what it does. Regardless of money, achieving what one sets out to do feels good.

Provided it has not changed to cloning a different amp, that Monoprice amp is a clone of the original Laney CUB and one of the reasons why the CUB Super series exists.

@@Bobby-wn5yr The difference with Blackstar and Blug is that Jim Marshall didnt clone the Bassman EXACTLY and then call it a "Flender Amplifier". Boss didnt come out with a green overdrive with symmetrical clipping and called it "Flube Screamer". The ones u mentioned took the design and did their own thing with it. What Blackstar did was lazy and scumbaggery, SPECIALLY since they have a much larger platform than Thomas for the general audience.
