Heritage one is the best scheme BNSF had in my opinion, besides the inherited BN & ATSF equipment.

I got BNSF 978 a couple weeks later in Iowa, for crew training. Only been on BNSF for 3 days. Still Had its Conrail inspection tags in it. And the cards where signed 2 days prior it had been in Chicago, then to Lincoln Nebraska and then that’s when I got to go in one for the first time. I had recently found the photos I took….and not too long before that February 1995 had brand new SD70MACs all the time…..

Thanks for the information on BNSF locomotive number 978, hard to believe these locomotives are over 20 plus years old already. BNSF has been scrapping the former Santa Fe C40-8W locomotives, a bunch of those were cut up in Longview, Texas.

The way these locomotives will get to BNSF's home rails is after they get switched to Conrail's interchange track, Conrail might have some locomotives due to the Erie plant for repair,lease turn ins,the westbound train arrives by the plant, the power taken off and these new units(crewed by Conrail) couple up to the train then head to Chicago where they are delivered to BNSF's yard, It's a win-win for both Conrail and BNSF, as Conrail doesn't have to use their power, BNSF doesn't have to pay Conrail the freight charges,It's the way all railroads do to get their GE units to the plant or pick up new units.
