Just found you, as I’m just about to put down a floor in 1/2 cabin in my old 80s doer upper. I knew when I saw you using ozitzo tools that I had come to the right place. Now I can’t wait to watch your other videos. On a very very serious note. Please don’t let your father work with resin without a proper respiratory mask. Resin fumes are toxic, and dads are precious.

i use insurlation boards easyer to prep. and lighter in weight resin each side to seal them and strong to. then if you need to bend it jut cutt a little Vshape on one side then once in shape . fill where the groves you cut after setting it can be lifted out carefully, then fiberglassed both sides.then put back into the boat using peanut butter spread on top of the cleats and stringers. then seal edges and fiberglass one more layer. then paint. you did a good job with the ply and sealing it well done. thanks for sharing.. phil in the UK

Hi Phil what type of insulation board did you use? I've got to to replace the floor in my boat similar to this one. How long does this method tend to last? Someone tried to put me off using insulation board, something about the vibrations in the boat will turn it to dust in time. My jobs that need doing are Floor replacement Lockers rebuilt in the cabin Rubbing strake timber replaced Get outboards running Nice new paint.

@@cliptoverse3 i use king span. if you incapacilate in fiberglass with no air bubbles its same a surf boards complete coverage sealed. vibration in the floor from what?
@cliptoverse34 жыл бұрын
@@philfish6619 it was vibration from the engines running they said. I think I will go with what you suggested. Much easier to work with like you say and light. Thanks for the quick response 👍
@philfish66194 жыл бұрын
@@cliptoverse3 if your boat has inboard engines and the vibration is bad enough to turn king span into powder. i would be very worried. engines under floor should have insulation around them to keep heat from damaging the rest of the boat. so what insulation would that person use then. all the boats in the world will turn to dust lol. my boats are running in boards and out boards, there fine.thanks for replies.

I'm very impressed with your father's handiwork. 👏 However, if it were me, I would have used EPOXY resin (for its superior strength & because it creates a waterproof layer). POLY resin (in my opinion) is inferior, and should only be used if you are topping with gelcoat. Also, if it were me - after covering the floor with chopstrand, I would have added a layer of 1708 fiberglass for regidity. FYI.

@@TheBoatProject my dad an I, like you two, built several Willamette River salmon boats for his milkman friends for below the falls in Oregon City. The Clackamas River dumbs into Willamette in Oregon City an that's good for steelhead river drifting. So we built several drift boats (some oars some with outboard motor wells). Now I'm fiberglassing sailboat that was hit by car an knocked off trailer. Damaged throughout but hey, it's just fiberglass. I just fixed a kayak with bow damage, an I'm restoring a lapstrip16 fishing boat. I put my 10hp Honda for kicker motor an 48 2stroke Evinrode that I got from neighbor with hip surgery! I just bought goldwing motorcycle from guy North of Seattle that's doing a $1 million estate deal an has to move his stuff. (He says, I can't lose a $ million deal because I can't clean up my stuff (st#t). Bike covered in dirt from storage didn't know color! But after trailer ride down I-5 it reveals pinstriped an desert airbrush scenes, cool! So, he starts talking about his 150ft fishing boat! I'm always working on some project here by hoods Canal. (Look up Hoods Canal on internet) San Juan Islands boating paradise! PS told you about my dad's boats an milkman friends fishing Willamette! First fishing spot down stream from Oregon City fall is called ,"Black Point" (over yrs falls pounding on granet rock has turned rocks shinny black). Next fishing spot below black point is called the "Milkmans Hole" after my father an our boats salmon fishing in "hog" line together! To this day, you talk milkman hole an fishermen know where your talking! PSS I'm at Friday Harbor San Juan Islands marina a see a big really long set of oars, so I buy a pair for my dad. Next time I visit dad he'd built a drift boat to fit those oars, like your, my dad was very cool! But, I really put open dad's eyes when I drove in, towing my new Ford v-8, 22', Duckworth aluminum Jet boat, haha!

I just wonder if you seal floor totaly, you have no acess to bottom in case you hit something and water start come into boat. I do similar project at the moment, but i would leave opportunity to lift the floor to have access, and of course in purpose to have storage under floor

this all looks great and nicely done but what about water drainage? youre going to have a hell of a time when it rains or if you ever have to redo the floor again in the future possibly

good work lads, I redid my floors also last year and it was alot learning (and a lot of resin!!), heaps of fun! you're lucky you have your old man to guide, this resin and glass work stuff is nasty (and itchy), cant wait for the flow coat to go on? question: how do you find the TALC as a filler compound? how much catalyst are u putting in and how long has the cure time been
@TheBoatProject4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Daniel! So much resin! We used more than we thought we would. We found TALC a good filler compound and fairly easy to apply. We were using 1.5%-1.9% catalyst which worked best for us. I think it depends so much on where you are and what resin product you are using. Generally we were leaving 24 hours between each floor section going down and then left it for 48 hours before the final layer of 450g chop. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. What type of boat is it you have?
@dadsnotfunny4 жыл бұрын
@@TheBoatProject Hi Thanks for reply, it's an old Monark Investigator 4.65m cabin, can send you photos of it if you wish, it's fully kitted now for fishing/sleeping. Will you be using flowcoat as the final layer? I had originally planned for Carpet but after the flowcoat came down I never looked at the carpet again! It is the best surface for a good clean/washdown after a fishing blood filled trip
@safetysam61184 жыл бұрын
Great stuff, ive watched all of your clips. Did you put a layer of fibreglass on the underside before you laid the floor or did you only lay it on the top? I was about to do mine and thought I only needed to coat the underside with resin? My first boat rest by the way.
@TheBoatProject4 жыл бұрын
We put a layer underneath too, that was in the previous video. I don't think it matters too much the previous floor we took up didn't have any, we just thought it would add a bit more strength and seal the plywood better. What type of boat was it you fixed up?
