July 26, 2019 - Slavery was not just a practice in the American South. It was also extremely common in the Southwest United States, especially New Mexico. Native Americans were often captured and sold to Hispanic families, a practice that continued up to and beyond the Civil War. They were called genízaros. It is not a history most people learn in school and traditionally it has been a shameful association. But, more people are delving into their roots and embracing their genízaro heritage. NMIF correspondent Megan Kamerick sits down with two scholars at the University of New Mexico who have written a new book on the subject and explain what this history means for New Mexico’s identity.

The way that I see it is , New Mexicans are like a cake. We need eggs , flour, sugar to make the cake. All those ingredients make the whole . To try and separate the individual pieces is almost impossible because we are such a mix group. I used to say I was only Spanish till I did research. I do have Spanish ancestors, but also native and Afro Hispano blood along with German ancestry. I refuse to claim one over the other. Today I prefer Latino for the fact it includes all of my ancestors. We are the mixed children from the past of New Mexico.

Most of tribes enslaved by Columbus and those who followed him are gone, are gone, victims of genocide. I read a diary written by a priest in which he agonizes over the screams of the men, women, and children brought aboard one of Columbus ships in order to rape them. As one person primarily surrounded by thugs, all he could do was pray. He knew he tried if to stop it he would be murdered. The anguish of that event haunts me decades later. The policy of forcing 19th and 20th century indigenous children into boarding school also involved forced work for no pay. Children were horrifically abused and many died, in part due to the amount of heavy labor forced upon them, labor which made money for the those who ran the schools. Punishment included beatings, rape, chaining children to open radiators causing horrific burns, etc, etc etc.

Sharon Kaczorowski, that's just what you white Anglo-Saxons (in USA) did. Do me a favor, read and study a little bite more, but not supremacists from KKK. Kisses!

I’ve spent most of my 71 year life studying oppression. As for the kkk, I’ve my share of death threats from them…just because I responded with an example from one period of the oppression and genocide of native peoples don’t jump to foolishconclusions.

The so called Spaniards, that, came from Spain to settle. Some, came to rob, steal, to make a mew life for future families, some came to teach Spanish and Spanish ways. Also, to get ahead by forcing Native Indians to do the heavy work or not so heavy work. BUT, That, was going on in other parts of the World. Things were rough all over.

Fernado Desoto captured and took N/A back with him all the time to be slaves to men and women all the time. Even N/A had slaves. Irish , English, scotch many Europeans were slaves or Indentured servants. Nothing unsual in the 16th, 17th, 18th century. Read history in tells all about it, we don't want to face it. Not just Black people.

It is So stupid to refer to folk in Mexico as, "hispanics', as if they're all Spaniards, or like the Spaniards crossbred with every single INDIAN in Mexico and made them all 'hispanos' before they got deaded. Besides, 'puebloan' villages WERE INDIANS TOO. And who the heck made up, 'hispano', anyway?! Smh.

@Big AL - The east Indians are, in fact, our cousins. Columbus wasn't to far off with the misnomer, 'indian'; The 1st Maya/Mokaya were Tamil - Had it not been for them, there'd be no Nahuatl & my tribe would be speaking differently. I don't mind the term Native, but the Euros here use it to say they're native also. Americanos know this. Tikba ihiya micha k issa. Much Love.

Slavery was practiced from the moment Columbus arrived. It still exists in the agricultural and service industries, where it primarily impacts people women if Eastern European ethnicity (sex trade) and men and women of Hispanic and Asian ethnicities (agriculture, home services, sex trade and other sectors). While far smaller than the African and indigenous tribe slave trade and illegal, it continues.

The folks that settled in 1598 And 1693-4 were mixed when they arrived, they just mixed a bit more. It is still taking place today. My own family is now mixed with the gringo folks. My grand kids, will really have a lot of research to do. SO, we need to keep good records. I have lots and lots of mix, probably, back To Ramses II. And, the Natives, that came from Asia. To me, what counts, is what is in your Inner being. Are you a good person? Or, a bad person? I'm, a good person. So, that, is. GOOD!.
