This might sound overly philosophical but I think sometimes pets make us so emotional because they’re a constant reminder of our capacity to love. There’s a particular intimacy in taking care of someone or something else’s basic needs. It’s a responsibility but also a privilege to learn about the self-sacrifice and patience required of you to take care of another living thing. It makes us better humans to love something else unconditionally literally whether it is a partner or a cat or a little tomato plant. Your emotion seems like overwhelming gratitude to me. Thank you for sharing it with us ❤️

Our cat was our "pandemic baby" and he had separation anxiety so bad we had to get another kitten (not to replace him, we now have 2 cats, Poncho and Pooh Bear) but it helps if you put a blanket or shirt that smells like you and your partner in his space or even sprinkle a few treats and toys around in a smaller space. He is sooo cute btw ❤️

My son got a kitten that had bad separation anxiety. Two kittens are hard work and expensive but it was the best thing for him to get another "baby" to go with his first one. They love each other so much! I will even take both to the vet even if only 1 has to be seen just because they comfort each other so much on the ride there.
@Ms-Peepers-Reading-Corner2 жыл бұрын
Calcifer is ADORABLE! Agree with Emily's advice - kittens are used to having a litter, so they are very cuddly and clingy. Your scent makes a big difference, as does having a fellow kitten to play with. When we got our first kitten, she needed so much attention that our vet suggested getting her a friend - that was one of the best decisions we could have made (your mileage may vary; only do it if you're up to having a pair). Of course, that started a trend, and we have 5 now, but you don't have to be like us. :) I can see from how you interact with him in videos that you have great cat mom instincts (such as patiently moving him away from where he shouldn't be). He's a lucky little guy!

I agree, two cats make for happier kitties. My situation was different. With travel time to/from work, I was gone at least 10-11 hours a day. Getting my second kitty made my first kitty practically stress-free. Except for thunderstorms with a lot of high winds. He turned into a yowling nightmare when high-winds happened. 🤷🏼♀️

top tip for new kitty parents, especially indoor cats is start playing and touching their paws as much as possible both front and back so they get used to it. This helps when it comes to cutting their claws (just the tips - it doesn't hurt and is needed otherwise they get overgrown) if you start it now less likely to get mauled later on lol.

Hi Emma! My sister and I adopted a stray cat during the second lockdown last year and if I think about her too long I get very emotional too. She makes me sooo happy and I want her to be safe and happy and loved always. I think having a pet to take care of is an undescribable feeling because they depend on you a lot so you just want them to be okay at all times and while that is amazing it's also a big responsibility. I have to remind myself that she's as safe as she can be right now and that I will try to keep her that way for as long as I can. Cats are so beautiful and smart and loving; Calcifer is very lucky he got such a lovely human to be his mum

For separation anxiety with pets, a way to do it with puppies is the thing you mentioned with slowly increasing the time away. It could start off as leaving the room, with the door open and coming back right away, then leaving for 10 second, 30 seconds, leaving and closing the door and coming right back, so he know that no matter how long go away for, you are coming back. I know some people give their dog a long lasting snack, to keep them occupied for a while. It might be hard, since it sounds like he's spooked already, but I hope it'll be better! Good Luck!

I used to have a cat named Gumby and he wasn’t my first cat but he was my first cat that would be truly mine and I was only allowed to have it because it was my birthday. My mom didn’t really like cats so we had to keep him outside and he was doing fine until he wasn’t. One day I found him outside and to his side he was bleeding and you could see something bit him. I sat down and started crying next to him immediately because I thought about losing him and all he did was be there for me and it made me less sad. I tried my best to take care of him the next few days. I was around 12 when this happened and I can say the feelings you were feeling at the moment were the ones I was feeling then and it’s terrible but incredible to care so much for such a wonderful creature like a cat. Especially ones that don’t mind your presence.

That emotional fragility you were talking about- it’s been happening with me a lot lately too. Last night I was hugging a few family members and I had this intense wave of love that was difficult to cope with, it felt like I could burst into tears or throw up lol. I work with children and it’s such a maternal and protective position that I look at these kids and am overwhelmed by how much love I receive from them. It’s quite the experience to have these moments of acute awareness of our situations, or rather, of the circumstances of our lives.

Hi Emmie... I'm a huuuge reader too and been following you about a year or so. I am also a practicing Herbalist and over time I have found that physical symptoms very often have emotional roots, and as I was listening to you talk about Ozzie it occurred to me that the acne is literally things coming up from the depths and being processed and excreted by your body... I also thought about how you just came back from BC... clean air and a break from the rigid demands of an ordered life (part and parcel of "normal" life in the modernized West)... there is a component of grief to coming back to regularized life patterna from such a glorious trip like the one you just took. I guess my point is to do what you need to do physically and to keep following the emotional trail of discovery (about your inner workings) wherever it leads-- I think your instincts are right on!. So much love for you and your path in life... I absorb so much of that Way from your vids. 🧡💛💜💚💙❤

For separation anxiety in cats, sometimes it helps to play the radio/a podcast when you are out. In your case, I'd make a playlist of your videos and then play it for Calcifer when you leave. It'll both distract him from you and your roommate leaving and also calm him when you are gone as he'll be able to hear your voice.

I love you Emma, your videos are the best part of my day as sad as that sounds. I'm also in love with my cat and it's kinda hard to see her and know that she might not be there after a few years. What really helps me with those thoughts it's just to think: every single moment I have present with you, I'm gonna fully enjoy and be fully aware of you. You can't control how they go, but you can control the time you have with them, so making her the most free and the cat with the most love in the world is my priority. Anyways, love you emmie thanks for your videos and I wish I could give you as much happiness as you give me. I cry all the time when I look at my dog because in some odd way, I just can’t believe that she chooses me to care for her. She just unconditionally trusts me and loves me so much. Maybe there’s parts of me that feel unworthy of that (I am in therapy😂😂) but I am just so overwhelmingly aware that I am her whole life. I do not have children so I can not fathom the amount of love that that must be but when she listens, when I truly feel like she understands, or I see any amount of growth (like the other day she hiked off the leash and listened the whole time🥹) I just want to cry because I am so proud. And then the very cynical and sad part of me remembers that she isn’t going to live forever and when that thought hits me (again I am in therapy 😂) I just cry and cry and cuddle and cry but I think that’s the beauty of it all. It’s just so overwhelming that she chooses me with her life. It’s just an abundance of gratitude and love. Now I am crying

Literally, I relate to the emotions when you look at Calcifer. I grew up with cats, but I could have one as an adult for a long time because I always lived in no pet places. When my husband and I moved to where we are now and could get a cat, I started looking and looked FOREVER at cats in our local shelters. My husband always just looked at me like, "What are you looking for?" It was hard to explain, but I knew I was looking for our cat. I knew that when I found him or her, I would just feel it. I looked for over six months, and one day, we were both at the shelter and I saw this gorgeous fluffy black cat and immediately just knew. This was our baby. We've had him since Feb. 2021, but even now, I look at him and I'm overwhelmed by how much I love this cat and how he really is our cat. He's so weird and so loud, but he'll hop on my lap or want to be held and he just purrs and it's just the best feeling. I love that you're getting to experience that cat connection!!! ❤️

The mirror visitor is really really good !! It is really unusual, and I loved it for that. In France, it's classified as both YA and adult !

I found my two cats in my garage and now it's almost been a year and they're truly a blessing. I honestly didn't think I'd get cats as a dog person but they've changed me a lot. Calcifer is just so cute I'm excited to see his journey!

Hey Emma, this is the first time I'm commenting here on your channel, but I have so much to thank you for! For starters, you pulled me out of my greatest reading slump of 2 years and I can never thank you enough for that. The lockdown was pretty harsh on me but luckily ( I have to thank my youtube algorithm) I stumbled upon your 100 book recommendation video and I kid you not, the energy ,passion and love you show towards reading reminded me of how I used to be once. From then on, I've been religiously following you, and god! Your videos are such a treat , they take me to this third world where it's me and you and this wonderful youtube family and your videos are oftentimes my break from a very stressful medical school life. But the best part has been watching you grow emotionally, mentally and now as an expanding family! ❤️ much love to tiny Calcifer ( I love all your Ghibli references)

When you are ready to bring back plants(depends on how much room you have between the plant and pot) you can put tape sticky side up across the top of the planter, cats don’t really like sticky on their paws. Another option, you can put toothpicks or skewers in the soil so calcifer gets a little poke.

i just finished 1984, the first book of my summer reading assignment for ap english 11, while sitting with my cat on the screen porch! max is such a love and he made a dismal book so much more enjoyable. (i did enjoy the book, but hoooo boy it was heavy.)

I know that this can get tricky sometimes (in terms of finances, getting them to get along, etc) but in terms of 'separation anxiety' you should really strongly look into getting another kitten or young cat (and this also extends to non-pandemic/post-pandemic separation anxiety too). One of the least known but most important things about cats is that they actually have a lot of social needs, particularly when they're so young. It's also a good idea because it's less work for you - when they're that young they're so energetic and they can get it all out by playing with a friend instead of wrecking your stuff. They lead happier lives and you have less work - it's a win-win! (I didn't know any of this stuff til I started fostering kittens, and let me tell you, having 2 kittens is so much better for you and for the kitties. I would recommend doing some more reading on cat socialization/having 2 kittens and it will give you a better sense of the benefits and how to do it right.) And I GET it about crying over your cat. I literally tear up about my cats weekly lol//end cat rant, and let's get back to books lol

hey emma! you dont have to worry at all for not sharing your whole life, one thing i've learned of gorwing old is that privacy becomes a luxury once you start creating for own stuff. Also, I relate to you when you feel emotional for your cat. I had one when I lived alone and the pnademic happened, unfortunatelly I had to give him into adoption because I could not afford to live alone so I had to mobe with my dad and he was allergic as well... it was one of the hardest things I had to do. I've never bonded with a pet like that and I only had him for six months. I still cry when I remmember him, but once I live alone again I'll adopt cats that need my help. I live in Mexico so there are a klot of them on the streets

Cat tip: if they don’t use something (the cushion-bed) move it some place else. And for toys, they get bored of the same ones, so it’s good to have extra and rotate them.

I relate so much to the crying for no reason about your pet thing. There are times when I look at my dog and just start sobbing because of how much I love him and want the best for him 🥺

Congratulations for reaching 300k subscribers !! It usually takes a few months for a cat to settle and get into his own little routine. The first months with my cat I also tried to make him sleep in another room, but that drove him crazy and anxious (he also has big separation anxiety, plus he comes from a shelter). Now he's free to sleep wherever he wants and he's sooo quiet at night. But between those two phases there were a few weeks during which he kept waking me up at night, playing, running around. So it's normal if it takes a bit of times for things to settle :)
