I can go read a bunch of blurbs for myself if I want. I'd rather hear a rec from someone who's read the book. Obviously you can't read all of them but maybe you could find a small booktuber who has? Or invite the author to provide a featured review? I really like that it exists but I think it needs a rework somehow.

As someone who's read Carmilla, calling it a queer romance is insane. Carmilla is a predator who kills several little girls over the course of the novel and is actively draining Laura of life throughout it. Hell, Carmilla tried to kill Laura when she was so young that, according to her, it was one of the earliest things she could recollect and couldn't be older than six. The only reason she didn't was because Laura cried out it pain once bitten and attracted the attention of adults. If you want to use the vampirism of the book as a metaphor for lesbians, like I've seen some people argue for, it becomes a book saying lesbians are predators who've come to attack and turn your children. Let me be clear. I am pro lgbtq+. I am lgbtq+. I am not saying this because I'm a bigot, and I want the book to agree with me. I am saying it because, although well written, all I see when reading it is anti-lesbian propaganda, and the fact that so many seem to think it's actual romance astounds me. Edit: It's been a while since I read it, but talking about it made me want to. So I grabbed my copy and started into it and realized I made a mistake. I said Carmilla tried to kill Laura when she was seven. I misremembered. She was actually younger than seven. I changed what I wrote to match.
@EzaleaGraves2 ай бұрын
I felt the same way about werewolves in Harry Potter. Sure they experience prejudice and it's similar to the experience of LGBTQ+ people. But the main werewolf also ended his book by attacking a teacher and three students, and the only other werewolf of not purposefully went out of his way to attack children. I think anytime an author tries to use monsters to represent marginalized groups they're always walking a fine line between representation and demonizing
@theunskilledshinigami76232 ай бұрын
@@EzaleaGraves I agree with your last point, but I do want to state that with Carmilla specifically, I don't think it was ever intended to be good representation and was in fact made to demonize a specific group. It's modern people trying to reinterpret it while ignoring the basic facts of events in the story, such as Carmilla killing multiple children, who have tried to act as if it was ahead of its time representation.

Yeah, I mean I think it is a very homophobic representation of lesbians. And is a really interesting juxtaposition to Stokers Dracula. And the idea of declining morality within the Victorian world. And the true horror not being some gothic beast. But the fact that humans might succumb to the “desires” presented within the texts. Which clearly have homoerotic overtones

For those interested, I highly recommend the original art books, as well as their TTRPG counterparts by Free League Publishing!

The Electric State surprises me most out of these announcements, even more than Bram Stoker having a new book coming out. The Electric State is based on an artbook by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag. Making the leap from artbook to film is wild. It's also got a tabletop RPG released by Free League/Fria Ligan, who also make RPGs like The One Ring, Alien, Mork Borg, The Walking Dead, Blade Runner and Coriolis. They got other RPGs that were entirely based on a Swedish artist's artbook, including another one by Simon Stålenhag: Tales From The Loop, about playing kids in the '80s where there's a bunch of robots and weird stuff going around.

The gaming industry having too high budget and too many chefs that should not be part of it reminds me about how Duncan Jones wanted more freedom and trust for the Warcraft Movie as the high budget locked his hands behind a bunch of CEOs which kept progress from happening as they had to review every little change or constantly commandeer the direction because they were the ones with the money.
@CoopHawke2 ай бұрын
There's one giant issue in the games industry that nobody is really talking about because it has alot of benefits. It's the Unreal Engine. It's an amazing tool for smaller teams that can't afford to make their own engine but it's killing the AAA scene. 1) with everyone using the same engine they all feel the need to keep up technically with eachother which is increasing dev time, budget and team size 2) we're losing engines like CDPR's Red Engine which not only made great looking games but unique looking games. Now games all have a familar look. 3) this one isn't talked about enough but Unreal makes it easier for companies to hire freelance workers and lay people off. On boarding new people takes almost no time when you're using a familar engine.

When he was alive, I believe publishers did even get him to change some aspects of his writing so that it wasn't too over the top. So essentially, I don't think changing authors works should be a common practice, especially posthumously, but in this particular instance, when it comes to kids developing their views of society, I think it was harmless.
