If you want guests to go toward the house, I would bring the brick walkway all the way out to the parking area, so they just follow the brick path. The entrance to the flagstone patio could be along the path, maybe through an arbor or just a break in the hedge. I can't wait to see the end result, but enjoying the long drawn-out journey just as much. Always something to look forward to!

In Addititon the brick path needs to have some sort of grand feel, so one knows that it is important.

I thought the same thing, the floor could tie the areas in together and be natural. Adding the arbor is just genius. That sounds like it could be soooo nice
@leegalloway95082 жыл бұрын
i like this idea but i would accentuate the entrance with possibly the urns you took out of the formal garden recently. an arbor could also be nice, but you can have too much of a good thing and you already have several arbors scattered about. i would want a bolder statement. like taller evergreen topiaries or something structured. awaiting the result also!

For the entry walk : why not have some stone pillars on either side of the start of the brick walk to add a sense of formality to indicate the beginning of entry walk and being stone they could marry the color of the flagstone to the entry.
@corron1682 жыл бұрын
My thoughts too! Could add some black metal/iron gates to the pillars and leave open toward the Hartley and the house entrances

This was my thought as well. Brick or stone pillars with either a planter on top or a light.

Yes, I had same thought....columns, lights?.....could help clearly identify the primary entrance. As far as transitioning the paving materials from parking gravel to hartley and main entrance though? I'm a bit lost on that too.
@kylakurian3602 жыл бұрын
Morning Laura! Hope you and yours are well. You asked about how to give direction to parking, the house, and the Hartley. The first thing I thought of were 💡 lights in a stone column made with same brick 🧱 or pavers that you are using or on posts. I’m thinking like the gas flickering lights.

Just had a mindful moment. I have watched G.A since 2016! (Omg that's been so long) In that time we had a rental home so the garden was annuals and pots I longed for Garden of my own. My mum trained as a horticulturist at Kew gardens in the UK, and the love has been passed down like Laura and her mum. And to see how much this garden changes in just months and years gives me hope. So that that we have our purchased home and the garden we have been dreaming of just I too can now see leaps of progress and have the confidence in knowing that gardening is magic ingoea from dirt to green and beautiful in no time. It's true to garden is to believe in tomorrow ❤️🌹

I'm sure I'm echoing many others but: Oh my God, yes I go through that worry with bigger projects that are not cheap and you're not gonna change fast even if you don't like it. My mom has very limited mobility now and we're putting in a path that her walker can go over easily and YES I'm super nervous about picking the right pavers! It's a path for her to easily get to the car, but it's also going to be part of my garden. Very lucky I found someone patient and excellent at his work. But still, big time nerves.

I don't like the flagstone, it doesn't fit with the formality of the brick. She needs to pick a style & stick with one because while this mishmash might appeal to the eclectic, it doesn't match with the formality of the Hartley & the brick. Hiring a professional Landscape Designer would be a huge help to "button up" the hodgepodge that's going on.

I just watched your video of the Crossroads Cottage garden tour. At 17:10 in the video Jack talks about the tumbled limestone that boards the kitchen patio being like the lime flagstone pathway going out into the grass near by... maybe you can find some flagstone tumbled bricks to use as a transition stone (boarder) at the end of your brick walkway going into your flagstone sitting area. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for all the videos, been watching for years now.

Hi Laura, Amazing work. Have you considered marrying the flagstone and the distinct pathways to the house or Hartley by utilizing the same brick pathway that leads you from the flagstone ( heart of the large area) to either of the structures? You can create a visual accent of the pathway with structure by repetition of planters or 4 seasons sculptures.

It has been such a huge journey for you all, but everything that you are doing is worth it! It’s so exciting watching your beautiful garden projects take form; each one so different, but yet all have a unified design that suit your lovely home. Why don’t you put a large, stunning archway at the main entrance to your house 🏡 Perhaps you could give your property a beautiful name and have it etched into the wood, or maybe a big black or white metal archway with a hanging plaque? You could grow some sort of striking blooms or roses up the archway. 🌺 You could always have a smaller but similar, less grandiose archway lead to the green house. Your property is really looking beautiful. All of your trees, shrubs and perennials have so much. 🌳🌻🌲🌷

I agree, rather than trying to make the entrance obvious with the pathways, mark it with an arch, trellis or other structure. I also think if you want it to be obvious as an entrance, the bushes at the corners in that area need to be removed and replaced with something shorter and more open.

Hi Laura and Aaron: ⛲⛲🌺🌺About the cohesion of parking and entrance: there are so many great suggestions below, it is a bit overwhelming. My two cents joins several of the ideas below -- make a diamond shaped raised bed as you enter the space using the bricks for walls and the flagstones as capstones to the brick. You can then perhaps sit there or sit things there as you come in. The kiddos would like it too. In the center of it, beautiful flowers of course and perhaps a lighted fountain that will define the space during day and night times. The diamond will direct flow left or right without hiding that beautiful view of the Hartley. Keep up the good work! I have been watching for 6 years now. Love everything you do!
