The BYD Dolphin offers a playful design inspired by its namesake, backed by the innovative Blade Battery for improved safety and efficiency.
Not too long ago, we got to see the latest trims on offer from BYD:
The Active trim features a 44.9 kWh battery, delivering a 211-mile range, while the Boost trim amps up the power with a 130 kW motor and a 193-mile range.
Both trims come packed with advanced safety features, an ergonomic, spacious interior, and fast charging capabilities. Priced between £26,195 and £27,195 - the Dolphin offers excellent value for anyone looking to switch to electric driving.

This was a great report on the BYD Dolphin and l agree everything the tester says, one thing the tester did not mention is the car has electric folding mirrors and you can fold if you want to park in tight spaces. l live in Thailand and brought the standard version for just £12500 so less than half the UK price, my car has no sunroof, or wireless charging, electric seats and no multilink rear suspension, and last but not least my battery is 44.9 KWH but everything else is more or less the same as the higher spec cars. It has all the safety features of the higher specs cars including NCAP safety rating of 5* This car is unbelievable to drive with rapid acceleration even with the 44.9 battery and here in Thailand BYD give 8 years warranty on the car and same on the battery so l give my car 10*out of 10* rating

Thank you David, that’s crazy prices Australia save a fortune on most things too, yes they don’t like to compromise on features, tech - it’s refreshing to see, enjoy and thank you for your detailed comment.

I really like the look of this and the BYU Seal U as well. The Dolphin looks to be as versatile as the old Golf. Excellent review as ever guys. Cheers, Nigel.

The main thing i hope BYD would improve on the Dolphin is the issue of glaring reflection of dashboard on the windscreen.

What’s not to like on the car Ben? No wonder Stellantis and VW are in dire straits! It will be interesting to see what tariffs our Government will want to impose on these imported cars? USA is putting a 100% tariff on these cars. Impeccable review as per usual Ben. Footnote - I’m amazed at the interior space in this car. 👍😎

Thank you George for the kind words, yes hopefully we don’t see similar in the UK. That cars a Tardis, moreso than bigger SUVS, remarkable -

What is the expected miles/kWh? Very nice review, I think these would be flooding the US market if not for government tariffs and protectionism. I recently got a used Chevrolet Bolt EV, very comparable but the Dolphin has a few more optional bells and whistles, shorter range, but also faster DC charging if required (it isn't for me).

Thank you Ziploc, 4 with general driving and the odd fast acceleration and 4.5 upwards for eco runs, yes you’re right shame they’re so against China cars, what was it with the Bolt that turned you off it?

@@PlanetautoUK Nothing turned me off the Bolt, I bought one! I test drove two different Bolts (2017 and 2022) and also a Nissan Leaf (2018). We bought he '22 Bolt the same day I drove it. Still has 6 years/90,000 miles on the battery warranty for peace of mind. The Leaf I chose to skip because of the range and Chademo DC charger, almost unsupported in the US, should I need it. Also air-cooled battery which is a longer term problem. The Bolt was the next cheapest option, and ticked all our boxes. 259 mile nominal range, 4-4.5 m/kWh. It's much more luxurious than the old 2007 Mazda 3 I was driving, and my wife loves it too. She used to drive a Honda Odyssey for commuting but will now drive the Bolt as much as possible, which we will also use for all our local errands. My calculation is that the Bolt will pay for its purchase cost in saved gas at around 120k miles. Our electricity is very cheap at 10c/kWh, and we generate our own solar. If we dip into mains power for charging it's over 90% renewable generation (mostly hydro-electric). Gas averages about $3.50 a US gallon here in Oregon, and the Honda minivan only gets 19mpg around town. Of course if gas gets more expensive then the repayment period gets shorter, and I'll be monitoring that. We will retain the 2010 Odyssey as our second and bigger vehicle and for longer family trips, for now. With solid state batteries and other new EV technology coming in over the next 5-10 years I foresee us becoming a two EV family eventually. Other used EVs I could have bought in town like a Kona were more expensive and less electrically efficient. My whole purpose was $$$ savings, and a bit more luxury into the bargain.

Sounds like you've done your homework, and come up with the best plan for you. We do know of the Chevy Bolt and from what we've seen, it looks to be an impressive electric SUV. You certainly know your cars, @ziploc2000. Let us know how you get on. Thank you.

The width of the front doors are too short. The driver's head is next to the B-pillar. Chinese cars have a 'chauffeured concept' where rear room and comfort is important. It's works for larger cars with longer wheelbases, not so much for small cars
