Not sure where you got your degree in economics from. America doesn't have much choice competing with slave labor unless America wants to be a slave labor work force as well. People right now in America 'because of wealth', drive heavy, gas guzzling SUV's. Why? because they can afford to recognizing that many Americans aren't too smart and choose to live in debt with the appearance of wealth. That will change. But, what you don't point out is, letting China sell small cost efficient EV's in America for say $18-22K per vehicle...this would bankrupt American auto companies. Why? Because America can't compete with these vehicles sold in mass in China based upon Chinese labor costs. Not having an auto industry in America would bankrupt a large swath of America and would likely push us into a depression which is also why the auto industry was bailed out before. Trust me when I say as a Trump supporter, the smartest MIT economics grads advising Biden are making the right decision. In fact, one of the few good decisions the Biden administration has made. In summary, America needs to make more of their own products which is a wartime strategy as well and needs to commute in more cost effective compact cars with small displacement engines rather than Hellcats and TRX's. Making our own products and employing Americans to that end is a good thing not bad. Americans will need to adjust their lifestyle perhaps a bit but at the end of the day more employment in America is a good thing, not bad.

It’s very possible as most of software is developed outside of China. Much of automotive systems are still made by US or Japanese companies. I suspect US companies making parts in China will likely receive licenses to import components from China. It’s important to understand that Chinese communist dictatorship does control Chinese companies and can collect sensitive information on people with some of systems. For example military or U.S. government employees or even contractors could be tracked to where they work. Using AI could gather all sorts of intelligence on USA. There are plenty of automotive systems companies making automotive control computers outside of China. It’s only more sophisticated systems that are controlled. Think you should do more research before declaring this unworkable. Plenty of supply chains for these components outside of China in Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore and even U.S. and Europe. No real cost impact.

The GM Prizm was built in the same US plant as the Toyota Corolla. Just rebadged. We should be doing the same with Chinese auto companies. And share technology. That huge plant in Mexico will allow Chinese autos to dominate South America. Not a damn thing we can do about it. All companies need to partner up. Chinese farm equipment is now all over the global south, at less than half the price of US equipment. The Chinese are now building airliners. Boeing is history. Wake up, and partner up.
