Hey Sebby thanks for all the great content. My question is if I spend the $4000 to earn the 80k bonus on the CSP can I when transfer it over to a balance transfer card that’s not a chase card? Thank you if you are able to answer. #asksebby 😁

Sebby, as a former banker my guess is Chase is trying to cull their credit card book and derisk the portfolio. There are possibly a lot of "sock drawer" /bonus hunters who are unprofitable to the bank. Those unused accounts are open credit lines (potential risk) yet don't earn anything beyond the annual fees. There must be a whole lot of these for them to take such action.

Sounds like you have a good gauge on this. I’m a low spender, but by no means inactive on any of my card accounts. Should I be at all worried about this? I’m absolutely strategic with my applications and my categories I spend in, but I don’t churn or sock drawer any of my cards
@balkatron1

@@EthanCowlbeck I this this move is to shake out the sock drawer bonus hunters in search of profitable clients. Banks are starting to tighten their belts as many expect a slow down in the economy.

I would agree with that. I'm just thinking about how much collateral damage this might make with well intensioned people and to what degree it will make it more difficult to get multiple cards. Chase seems to be purposely vague in their wording, leaving it open to interpretation.
@EthanCowlbeck
@EthanCowlbeck 2 жыл бұрын
@@ramonsuarez1051 Well-intentioned people is so hard to define though. Technically anyone watching this channel is probably looking for a means to use banks to save more money than they would otherwise. At what point does a customer cost the bank profits, and at what point do they care? Is it at the point they don’t pay interest? Is it at the point where the rewards earned on every swipe exceed the merchant fee? Is it the point that the card isn’t used at all? It’s easy to look at the extremes of people who churn through bonuses and don’t use cards with any regularity, but where do you draw the line up to that? Is anyone truly safe or innocent?

Timing seems odd, CapOne is moving hard into travel cards and just increased portal access. Wells seems to be in a reboot and with a competitive cashback and dining cards it seems logical a travel card will be offered eventually. Why choose now to deter new users.

These changes are truly frustrating to me. Part of the reason I have so many cards is because chase decides to put benefits on separate cards: think how the freedom unlimited has 1.5x while the sapphires only get 1x. Or the hotel cards for when you happen to stay at that hotel. I don’t want to have a card closed because “you’re not using it” because I have a better card to put the spend on.

One data point here. I applied for the csp after the rule change (I was oblivious to it at the time). I previously had a CSR that I downgraded to a freedom unlimited 1.5 years ago (wasn’t traveling much). Now, 50 months after opening the original csr account I was again eligible for the intro bonus, so I applied…. I got the dreaded ‘wait for response in mail.’ Fast forward two days… I watch this video and thought for sure I had just missed out on an opportunity to once again run a trifecta set-up. To my surprise I now see the new csp in my chase app WITH a bonus tracker. Obviously Im happy that it came through, but the immediate response and subsequent news of rule change gave me a scare. Thanks Sebby for all the tremendous content.

Too many people are playing the points game to the hilt. Signing up for cards, getting the bonus after minimum spend, and then dropping the cards. Too many channels like this who talk about it, saturating social media with instructions on how to play the game short term. I have no doubt that Chase, Citbank, AMEX, etc are annoyed and are clamping down. Why is this a surprise?
@choreomaniac

Agree. The other big change recently of course is inflation and interest rate raises. So now they are giving interest free loans being paid back with less valuable inflated currency when instead they could lend that money out to other banks at a higher interest rate. So more sophisticated users are tying up their money and other risky ones might default and never pay them back. They want people to carry a nice balance and pay 20 percent internet a month. Not zero and bounce. Not crippling and go bankrupt.

I’d chalk these changes up to de-risking due to the expected economic environment. Inactive cards costs banks a significant amount of money. And if you offer a promo, it’s even more expensive. Most partner rewards programs actually aren’t favorable to banks. And in many cases credit card accounts are not profitable for at least several years out into the future. I expect that we will continue to see changes in both marketing strategies and risk management strategies to reduce overall financial and credit exposure across the industry. Love your channel Sebby!

Anyway, final note: Put a high-pass filter on that beast of a microphone, it's making you sound too boomy ;-) (set it no lower than 80Hz.) Yikes! 😱 I'm actually planning to apply for the CSP this weekend after spending the last couple years working hard to be well behaved enough to get below 5/24... and now they come up with this. I've had the CFF and CFU for years and I just got the CIC a couple months ago. Hopefully I can get the CSP and the bonus without this being an issue. Also, I've had the IHG Select card for years as well (thanks to your plug back then) and have been making use of the free night while pretty much never actually using the card. I guess I should start pulling it out every once in a while or start looking over my shoulder for the bank to cancel it.

The fact they are put vague language makes me believe they are doing more of what Amex requires spend on cards periodically and not just sock drawer them as you implied. I feel it’s trying to dissuade from just going for SUBs/welcome offers. I don’t see how Chase will benefit one lane rules with their own cards. 🇷🇺

I just got my second Sapphire preferred card (last one was 4 yrs ago) while currently having the Freedom unlimited card. That would be in the same family of rewards.

I am not one to churn credit cards just to game the system, so I’m not worried that this will affect me, however, it is just one other rule to keep in mind that I would rather not worry about.

Instead of implementing inactive rules they should give better multipliers on those cards or maybe if you spend X amount of dollar every few month you get a free night? Benefits that makes people want to swipe using Chase cards over other cards.
@chewie94116
@chewie94116 2 жыл бұрын
Account inactivity probably refers to not using your card and just paying the annual fee to get the free night because as you and I know, the night is worth more than the annual fee. So, unless you spend 300-500 per year on the card, consider yourself on the cancel list.

Seems to me Chase is looking to encourage customers to use the cards they were issued and jettison the ones who just came for the free lunch.

The $89 (becoming $99) IHG card lets you add points to your free night certificate now so you could realistically use it at any property now as long as you have the extra points to “buy up” - not to mention the $50 United cash it now offers and it still offers tsa/global entry credit too.

I guess if you transfer to bonvoy and then to the airline that’s not a chase partner then your points are likely protected.

RIP to the Chase Trifecta. It was fun for those heavy Chase users in the 2010s. The only choices now are the Amex Trifecta or a makeshift Capital One Trifecta.

🕷I really hope this does not mean Chase card members can no longer get the Chase trifecta. I have been planning to add the CFF to my CSP and CFU, but this language makes me think it might not be possible. Originally, I thought it would be, but maybe I'd have to give up any 0% APR intro offer...which is fine with me because I pay my balances in full each month. I might just go into a branch when I am ready to apply for the CFF.

I think the new IHG premier reward is pretty good ? 3X on everything. 5X on gas dining and travel. If plus $100 statement credit and 10k points if you spend $20k. That’s close to 5X and 7X on purchases ?

Hmm why would chase do this? I mean wf is on a reboot, cap1 is moving in hard into travel not to mention all the others trying to find a niche as well. I see a lot of ppl moving to Amex or cap1 if ppl can’t get the trifecta anymore

This just makes Capital One more attractive to the novice and average user. Venture X for travel, Savor/SavorOne for Dining, groceries, and entertainment, and Quicksilver for everything else. Their travel portal ain't all that bad either. If they can consistently add lounges across the U.S. and later branch out to some international hubs, C1 is going to be the go-to bank/credit lender.

@conquerordie230
@conquerordie230 2 жыл бұрын
@@dolcevita8461 The Quicksilver and SavorOne have versions that don't have annual fees. The Venture X does have one for $395 but if you travel at least once a year you get a $300 travel credit plus a $100 anniversary bonus so effectively there is no annual fee. Cheers.

Chase sucks! I had 3 chase cards that I used all the time, and paid off each month. I was a day late paying a $15 payment one month and they dropped my limit from $15,000 to $500! When I called in, the representatives I spoke with said they never saw a drop like that for something so minor. I have "sock-drawed" all my chase cards and never ever use them now. My Amex, Citi and Capital One cards increased my limits, so they are my go-to cards now. I avoid chase at all costs now!
