As a veteran, we kept being told about a more modern army? (cutbacks) a more efficient army? (cutbacks) a more task focused army? (cutbacks) we were only soldiers but we knew when we were being shafted, every time we got a pay rise. Rarely, our food and accommodation costs went up to the same degree so we were never better off, we knew that our equipment was sub-standard, we spent less time training because of the costs of ammunition and other such things like fuel, spare parts. This has gone on for decades and is the same for all branches of the military, I am surprised the Navy don't have wooden ships again. This man will say what he wants but it will ultimately be the pen pushers and bean counters that will have the final word. We could not defend the Falkland's again, that's how bad things are.

@Jordon168Ай бұрын
I have to disagree. If such a scenario were to occur where Argentina were to invade the Falklands, I think the British would be able to defend it. You have to take into account the state of the Argentine's armed forces today. Argentina's armed forces today are not as strong as they were during the 1982 Falklands War. Decades of underfunding and economic challenges have left their military with aging equipment and limited capabilities. Their navy now has fewer operational warships and submarines, many of which are outdated. Argentina's air force also faces similar issues, relying on older aircraft with limited modernization. Argentina's military still has trained personnel. Their ability to launch and sustain a large-scale invasion of the Falklands would be difficult due to logistical challenges and the UK's established defences on the islands. The gap between British and Argentine military power has widened since 1982, favouring the UK. The UK still has advanced technology, strong naval and air forces, and a permanent military presence on the islands, including a small garrison of troops and fighter jets. These defences are designed to delay any attack until reinforcements arrive. Yes, okay, the army is smaller than it was during the 1982 conflict. The UK's allies and modern capabilities will still make a strong defence possible, though it might take significant effort and planning.

But what he doesn't mention is that war is fought and won by determined men, tech being a secondary consideration: look at Afghanistan, Western powers left there with their tails between their legs. The history of the British fighting man has largely been won by good leadership and resolute Soldiers on the ground. That said, the new tech developments are rapidly changing the war fighting landscape and need to be kept in check.

The infantry's role is to take and hold ground. By focusing on electronic warfare, uncrewed systems, air defence, long range fires at the expense of boots on the ground (not saying we shouldn't be improving those other things by the way) the MOD is implicitly saying that the army is now not designed to take or hold ground. They should come out and make that honest statement and not kid ourselves about our capability. Then we wouldn't need to waste money on assets that are in reality only window dressing (Challenger 3, Boxer?). Thats great and all, but you need more recruits and thats not going to happen when the country as a whole is in the shitter. I reckon you recruitment numbers are low because young people don't see the uk as a country worth staying in or fighting for and you have the government to blame for that.

How about extending basic training by a couple more weeks and only allowing people who actually pass fitness tests to pass out? For years fat biffs have just been moved on "on risk" just to become someone elses problem. Soldiers who havent even completed final exercises have been allowed to pass out. Start there at the absolute foundation of the Army. Then worry about software and technology. That will make the Army more lethal

Serious overuse of jargon and emotive phrases to disguise any actual meaning. Keep on waffling.

You need to address many issue technology and weapons dont cut much these day. You clearly lack mic, strategic depth both as a country size and as resources. May be you lack an army having both quality and quantity. You need to fix many thing which is rather difficult but not impossible.

Sounds like less man power to me. Less warfighters, with less fight in their blood.

The difficulty in all of this Defence transformation is that we’ve progressively outsourced accountability for supporting outputs to external agencies and contractors. Their targets are not capability focussed, as the frontline commands are. They are profitability focussed, and that satisfies only two groups of people - the treasury and shareholders.

Should allow UK militias (self funded) again to backup British Army and they won’t have all the regulations to deal with that regulars do. They might learn faster and make it easier for British Army to copy them. MOD should allow privatisation of smaller naval vessels to free up more funding for our armed forces.

@@HollowSword militias were not professional or semi professional tho. Hence why they scrapped them for the reserve army in 1907 who are semi professional force. Who are better trained and have better equipment to that of a Militia which is made up of civilians.
