Funny solo I preferred the real one but in the mix I preferred the emulation. It's all relative. Of course, whatever mics slate modeled are not EXACTLY the same as yours, so the idea is not if its identical (no 2 mics are even the same brand) but if it sounds good, and it does (even with your recording being kinda roomy)

Nice test - U87ai gives much more detail and clarity here, though it's going directly into the Scarlett stock preamp. Put a decent preamp in the chain, and the quality gap between these two mics will be even more pronounced...

There is some extra smoothness on the original & clearer highs.But I'm just wondering why you have kept the intensity slider all the way to minimum.

Nice.comparison. U-87 has more body and is more solid in the upper mid-range. The ML-1 is more open sounding. Both good but slightly different.

I actually prefer slate emu with this test for the song it's a bit brighter and cuts through the mix. But the u87 is smooth also I feel the difference is about 3-4 dB cut around 3-5k regions to match the slate with u87. In other words slate has boost that range to my ear and its actually right amount to cut through the mix not bad at all. Their both great sounds and I prefer the slate for this mix but the old mics doesn't impress me honestly. And the money should be spent on other things.

Slate picking up a lot of room sound, u87 is not. Listen at 4:00 maybe because of base mic sensitivity

The ML-1 Is picking up more of the room. if you were to reduce some of that effect I wouldn't see why it wouldn't sound nigh identical. No mic is 100% identical, but I think that "presence" I feel is missing from the ML-1 emu is just due to the higher level of room acoustics it's picking up.

I can hear the difference and it's so small but somehow the U87 sounds more interesting. Maybe it had more warmness and saturation to it or something like that I don't know but it sounds like a real amp compared to a plugin. Although they sound almost the same the real one sounds better haha... But man, for that price? For those who can't afford a U87... ML-1 all the way. Very impressive!

U87 sounds more flat/warm than slate which is lighter and airy but still clean. 87$.... I don't know

Unfortunately the real time auto tune you’re using is massively affecting the mic model emulation. Still sounds good, but a better test would be without the auto tune.

I agree, with the VMS it is preferred for autotune to be placed after the emulation but both mics still sound pretty similar I could only tell the difference once he solo'd them. I found the u87 has more clarity and detail while the slate sounds a bit cheaper but for $500 its definitely doing a great job.

These things are made for these environments, where there's a nice setup and nice software, but not a wide choice of hardware to be used on the way in... Straight into an interface preamp, you're not going hear a lot of difference between these or really any other condensers, but you're also not accessing one of the best tools of recording.... how real mics interact differently with different preamps is a BIG part of what makes the hardware superior... you're not going to catch that unless you gather a few of those to see what it's all about.

I hate to say but every time i hear the ML-1 it always sounds slightly harsh and distorted, has to be one of the most overrated mics ever. The difference between these 2 were huge prob one of the larger gaps in performance ive ever seen in a comparison.
