@@leolldankology I called 15+ attorneys and no one would take the case because there was not enough money involved for them to litigate. I could win in small claims court, BUT, in NC the contractor could just appeal it to District Court where I would then need an attorney, so I think you can see the problem there. Also, unfortunately you don't need a license in NC to do concrete so that was also not an option.

It's been great. The other thing is Harvey rents it from me all the time now. I give him a trailer and his guys can come get it whenever and not have to worry about anything. It's a huge labor savings on his crew since it is so easy to get it now.

Years ago we hired a guy to replace our roof shingles, he tore off old roof and tarped it, the next day it rained and flooded our home, every single room flooded, water literally was poring out of all ceiling light fixtures, found out the guy put up tarps that where full of holes, he disappeared a week later and we had to track him down four days later after the house somewhat started to dry we all got horrible sore throats

I’m just curious... since the original slab was so thick and didn’t have any rebar... couldn’t it have been ground down to the correct pitch, even including the swale down the center? We’ve done this in our manufacturing plant when we need to change where runoff water flows. For those who don’t understand what I’m saying, it’s similar to how they “resurface” asphalt highways by grinding off the top layer.

Great comment! Here we had to come down further than we could have ground it. We took 3 dump truck loads of dirt out of there (not including the concrete that came out).

Grinding concrete is a very slow, difficult process with lots of airborne dust even with a vacuum dust collector. Surface would have been wavy and not professional looking. Removal was only solution due to elevations.

Curious if a simple 2" lip of concrete all the way down the edge of the old slab could have prevented the water from washing into house

In theory it would work, but leaving the house lower means the tiniest pinhole would still leak. When you take a problem like that and try to fix it (anything you do) means you now own the entire thing, so I wasn't willing to leave the house vulnerable to flooding.

Nice save! Glad to hear the homeowner got some of her money back from the incompetent contractor. He should have known better. It's only right he be paid for the part of the driveway that was kept but he should have been fully responsible for also paying to fix the flood damage that was a direct result of his incompetence. How many people he has done this to, who unlike this homeowner couldn't afford to have someone else come and fix his poor workmanship?

Out of curiosity, why wasn't it an option to just add the new concrete in the area the old guy removed so it slopes from the house to the driveway?

That was an option. The problem with that is the slab was still sloping into the house and still higher than the house slab. This means flooding could still occur if the two ever separated or the new concrete got overwhelmed. Since it was a house, we went with the 100% solution.

If the facts prove that a contractor is doing shoddy work, telling the truth about that contractor is not bad-mouthing, it is warning future customers. Ad hominem attacks that are not substantiated by facts are wrong. The important hing that needed to be mentioned is that people need to get two or three estimates as well as have the contractor explain what the job will accomplish. A contractor who simply says "I'm going to lay a driveway and it'll look good" is like a doctor that says "I'll give you these pills and you'll feel better" - neither one is solving a problem.

Honestly what you did their is what needed to be done we appreciate your hard work bat as a General Contractor for 25 years we always used Metal flashing under the siding and below the concretes grade this will prevent all water damage the only way to go. It isn’t hard to replace the bottom piece of siding and replace it that’s an awesome some. But thanks for paying it forward.

This is my 2 sense of Eastern European engineering that would solve this issue. If you took the perimeter of the concrete next to the house and a concrete saw and you cut out a 2" drainage cavity along the concrete of the house and tapered it either to the back of the house or to the front or ran it into a pipe you would not have to throw anything out. Then you could cover that cavity with a nice plastic or metal mesh. This would be much cheaper for the homeowner and a quick job and it would solve the issue that easy wait. Have to think outside of the Box sometimes

👍 This homeowner was feeling so defeated when she first called me out. She was having zero luck with the contractor who poured and the flooding was continuing. We were able to get right out there and jump on the solution quickly which took a huge load of stress off of her. Bringing the news into the situation was brilliant and provided the pressure on the original guy, plus she left a ton of negative reviews and pictures on social media.

From what I've read elsewhere, many companies have run into problems staying in business when their name is even linked to something which seems shady or racist or "whatever". As it is, construction has enough issues with bad work performed so many people don't trust anyone to do the work correctly. Reminds me of a local cabinet maker. He wanted to retire, but nobody wanted to buy the company since his standards were of a Master Craftsman, which to many means "expensive". Too many people these days want the Ikea special furniture (mostly particle board) instead of well made cabinets which will last a lifetime. Eventually the cabinet maker just closed his business. He was getting into his late 70's and he was tired. Thanks for showing how a correct construction job should be done.

@@wendymorrison5803 Nope....I had a signed contract with the original contractor stating that the driveway would be 4" thick, original asphalt driveway removed and area graded to slope away from the house. Also had a 1 year workmanship warranty from the original contractor. And also BTW, the original contractor was not the cheapest quote I received.

I've seen this in a couple of videos of yours where you pour new concrete without rebar or wire mesh reinforcing. Here in Canada we put reinforcing in every pour we do....is it not required by your local code? The driveway would be much stronger and wouldn't crack with the steel in the pour.

We have extremely stable subsoils around here and nobody uses rebar. We do find rebar every once in a while in something that we are tearing out.

You really need wire mesh and a lot of joints up north in the colder weather because the grounds freeze. It's not needed in tropical climates like here. If I were doing it though, I would use at least the wire mesh. It's not that much more money and it really holds up nicely. But again that's really just a personal opinion and it doesn't require it.

I’m curious if you waterproofed the foundation of the house after tearing out the concrete. And, I noticed that the drainpipe from he gutter was just leading out on to the drive way. Won’t that possibly lead to problems later on, especially during heavy rainstorms?

Yes the homeowner did some waterproofing along the slab. And no, the gutter water on the concrete won't be a problem since we properly sloped the concrete. There wasn't enough fall to send the water into a pipe.

I've worked in the building industry in Australia all my life, and what this lady had happen happens often. In Australia concrete is the only trade you don't need an apprenticeship for. What happens is guys that have done a bit of floating or wheeled a barrow, they think: "hey this is easy as", they get a Builders License and are let loose on the GP! Very few of them ever take into account where the water is going to go when they set up and box. To fall concrete into a building is evidence he gave absolutely no thought to drainage! By the way, in Australia, people who have building work done, that is sub standard can call the Department of Building and Consumer Affairs in any state, and the guy is held accountable for his work! Of course this is OK if the guy is licensed. Using unlicensed tradesmen is discouraged because legally, your screwed! I notice he also did a botch job of cutting the lowest plank on the cladding. It looks like a crocodile ravaged it!

@@darwinawardcommittee When I lived in Germany, I used to see a lot of concrete bridges and overpasses which had been built but no road was going to them. I asked someone about it and they informed me the road was planned to be installed but they wanted the concrete work to cure first and the soil to settle so it wouldn't continue to cause issues when the road was built. Many of the German roads last for much, much longer than the roads we have here in the US. Both ways work, but one is aimed at the long term whereas the other is for the short term. To me, the US has an issue with the politician only wanting things to last as long as they are in office --just my perspective.

What surprises me with the new concrete is that it looks like there has not been put a wire-mesh/metal-grid inside - is that not usual in your area? Won't the concrete without it crack easily once a heavier delivery truck or something drives onto it?

This is exactly why I tell customers my concrete work is so much more expensive than others, I take the time to do some slope analysis and grade and slope the concrete to avoid drainage and flooding problems, occasionally you have to do bad slope when meeting existing slabs but it's always best to keep the water away from the house and foundation.

Hello Just ran into your channel. Hey folks save your money. Here in Central FL we get lots of rain so best option is a “ribbon driveway”. Pavers, and gravel in between the pavers and on the edges of pavers and house. Never had flooding problem. Add some gravel once in a while for maintenance. 👍🏻

How thick are you pouring the new driveway? It only look like 2 inches max. I could be wrong but I am happy to see you helping this wonderful lady out.

We pour 4" for driveways, sidewalks, patios around here.

wow good video ,one thing that is huge is tamping down the base /gravel before the pour helps keep the driveway from cracking .

You can do all the right things, get three quotes, check references, see past work and still get screwed. A proper company would remedy they're own mistake. But glad you were there to correct the issue properly. Also happy to hear the local news was there. Hopefully she gets some compensation from the original contractor. I always try and use local established contractors for jobs and beware of the underbidders, you get what you pay for.........Happy to hear she got some money back from original contractor

Sucks that the original contractor basically turned her driveway into a water funnel straight into her house. Thankfully you were able to correct the problem and educate others in the process. You wonder ow many other homes the original guy messed up before this one by doing similar work.
