It is very hard and you can feel the negative energy on the boat, everyone knows it, you have to keep it to yourself as much as possible and try to tough it out and joke around. Going broke or getting rich, do the job without being intolerable.

Might be a stupid question, but how do the captains hear random isolated comments from deckhands? I am assuming it is because they are wired for sound for the show. Otherwise it makes no sense, six guys chattering over raging waves and equipment

Theres usually a com from the bridge to the deck and most captains like to have eyes and ears everywhere they can on their boat. Its not like the captain's rocking out to skynard while the crew is working.

@Ryan S yeah I get that but having worked on a few boats I don't see how one guy talking low to a cameraman could get picked up over the other 4 guys screaming and the thunderous sound of waves and pots slamming against the boat. This is why they give the 4-1 hand signals on Count, because it is so loud. One crewman saying "cap has been overworking us lately" under his breath would never be heard in the wheelhouse
