I had a Defender for about 10 months. Having a 2021 Range Rover and having owned a 2018 Disco, I love the brand. However, when I got it, I was already using a modified 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road as my offroad use overlander and found that the Defender didn't meet my personal needs for offroad capability, and the independent suspension was a step in the wrong direction, for my personal needs. Just my personal needs, is all! It performed excellent, otherwise and was great fun! That is it! I have nothing bad to say about the Defender and was a bit sad to let it go! I would definitely consider one in the future and recommend them to everyone looking for a fun light off roader, with extremely comfortable daily drivability lol! I made fun memories in the one I had! I love seeing people using Defenders like this, so loved this video!

Snap although my RR is 1986. Also have a 110 V8 County Station Wagon. Still not convinced on the new Defender. How is it better than say a new Range Rover? My biggest concern is no adjustable heavy duty tow hitch for pin couplings.

Amazing vehicle, and amazing performance. I like your response ("it is a different kind of wheeling") to those who point out that it lifts wheels in areas that provoke much wheel articulation . The modern go anywhere side by sides do the same thing. Something to keep in mind is that if one wheel is in the air it is causing no resistance, and creating more traction for the wheels on the ground. Dune buggies proved this years ago by running the Rubicon trail at speeds that were deemed to fast and thus were banned.

@@cotrails8356 In case my comment is misunderstood by some. The new LR Defender is such a comfortable and beautiful vehicle to drive on road and off road and has some amazing engineering. It was a privilege to drive one on and off road. The interior design is so functional and rugged. I like the handle on the dashboard. I used that when off road as a passenger. Unfortunately though it seems hard to customise. Having to trim plastic to fit 35s should change. The fact that you have to take the front plastic skirt off to reach the recovery point is also disappointing for something that is supposed to represent king of the off road. I like the tip of just taking that off when going off road and it giving a better approach angle as well. The new Grenadier is becoming more attractive with all the bolt on accessory attachment points and easy to service in the field design. Easy. (so they say as it is not proven vehicle yet). Like a parallel universe of where the Defender could have gone. The point you made in this video or another of yours, about the Defender air suspension is great in that it is a different experience than front and rear live axles for off road. Not a worse experience. You just approach off roading in a different way of which many minds are not used to. So a bit controversial, maybe it is good to push the boundaries and warp the minds a bit. I hope it is not to costly to replace them when needed. I love how with air suspension you can lower the Defender for on road driving which is probably done most of the time. I wish LR would promote more of the off road design, for example in one review, I read that if the electronics fails it is design to fail in a good way so that the vehicle is still functional and you can get the vehicle home. I want to know more about that. I am a new Defender fan. I would like to see improvements though. No one seems to get it all right on the first of a new model release. I expect/hope that they will add improvements.

@@darren5160 I Follow what u say LR USP is its excellent off road capability straight off the showroom floor, with all of their vehicles. However Very few people ever go off road, or need more capability then what their LR vehicle comes standard with LR will sell about 70,000 new Defender worldwide in 2021. The 90 model has only just been released And, there are many more versions of Defender getting released over the next 3 years. V8, 130 model, utility versions of 130. Defender Sport model, and it’s derivatives etc etc Most of these will never go off road, or do anything really difficult off road. If the new Defender did not have comfort, safety, tech / features, and it’s a great / easy daily driver, it would not appeal to the masses, and sell in big numbers (for LR) For those people who want more from their Defender, LR give u an excellent platform, and like Steve, u then modify ur Defender to suit ur own individual requirements. ie a rock crawler, or overlander etc etc There is plenty of info on the www regarding its electronic fail safe functions and the ip64 ? rating of its ECM getting submerged in water etc. LR have been using electronic air suspension on their product since early 1990’s ( or late 1980’s ? ) The Ineos Grenadier does look promising The engines are current generation BMW 6 cylinder petrol or diesel These r not basic engines. They r high tech, and comply with various emissions regulations etc etc I don’t think anybody stuck in a remote area, could easily fix an engine issue ? Grenadier is meant to go on sale in the UK as of approx August 2022. Can’t pass judgment on it until then. Grenadier is more utilitarian then a Defender It won’t have as much mass market appeal as a Defender It’s aimed at a much more specific target market. The much lower forecasted sales volumes of Grenadier r appropriate for a small / niche company like Ineos. JLR are a much bigger company v Ineos JLR need to sell in much bigger volumes compared to a Grenadier to make a suitable ROI...

Why would they build it on a ladder frame? A monocoque is stiffer. The only reason traditional off roaders use a ladder frame is because they are truck derived and share the platform with pickups etc.

I'm not a hater. This thing popped tires off the ground way too much. It looked unstable many times. Off roaders know that you need to keep all 4 on the ground. This is no longer a true off roader like the old version with solid axles and amazing articulation.

Furthermore, for long journeys and overlanding in desserts the independent air suspension makes for much better ride quality.

@@dobbins2550 nothing wrong with lifting tyres. Solid axles are old tech and no longer relevant in a modern vehicle. I support independent all round and always have. What’s impressive is that this is super capable WITH wheels lifted so it can do the business with only 3 or 2 wheels on the ground which speaks volumes as others need all 4 down to make progress. It sure is a true off-roader and it has amazing articulation considering it’s independent suspension.

Solid axles of the Jeep have more flex. Defender has more tow capacity at 8200 vs 3500 lbs, more seating (up to 7), 300 Hp/ 400 hp/ and 518 Hp powertrain options… I guess the answer lies in what you will be using it for most often. I had a 5 hour drive this last weekend and I chose the Defender over the 392 for comfort on a long roadtrip …

So few originals ever made it to the US, about 5k imported. We’re on 37’s with 5” lift on our latest build and running trails that 95% would probably never attempt. Really surprised everyone at the Great American River Rally in Moab with how well it performed! 27 seconds up Hells Gate while a built diesel 130 struggled some as did a Classic RR. They’re very capable… just depends on what you want. Plus, tows 8200 lbs 90 mph, seats 7, and has up to 518hp available👍

If I didn't have the Cherokee Trailhawk, I'd have the Defender.. I've found that one trick with 4-wheel independent suspension, at least for mine, based on ramp tests, is to run 4 psi lower in the rear than in the front. This will help keep all the tires on the ground as the rear often doesn't have enough weight to stay down. So let's say your right rear is off the ground, the lower pressure in the left rear that's still on the ground will allow it to compress more so that the right rear can come down some. This is limited to probably 1 inch of extra flex when you do this but hey, it's better than nothing. If you have already bottomed out your PSI... add 4 in the front. I'm serious. With my testing, I was best on corner travel with 26 in the front and 22 in the rear. When I had 22 on all 4 corners, it was worse. Science...

It's cool that you did Poison Spider, I love that trail. Its not easy. But the lack of flex on these Defenders is just appalling. It's just terrible. But these aren't meant to be crawlers I guess. PS- I did see a new defender (stock) on Hells Revenge the same week and it did fine on that easier trail.

No doubt, the traction control is good, no doubt it has more low end torque, no doubt land rover has the best technology. But that poor wheel travel is enough to tip over the defender. Atleast a sway bar disconnect would have been a good option, except it would reduce the dependability of the CV joints, which is why solid axles would be better. And now with the complicated monocoque, it's hard to install ARB style metal bumpers.

This is Big Bertha… three builds ago. Substantially more down travel now. We remove rear sway bar, and we now run 37’s. Night and day better setup today than in the early months of the New Defender arriving to the US

Thing I notice right away, air bag suspension has no flex.

Air bags get stiffer the more you raise the suspension. Springs more comfortable off road.

is this the 4 or 6 inch subframe lift?

This is a 2” subframe plus 2” lift rods. It was an early prototype and we were pushing to get it on the trail in early May. We would suggest the 4” and 1” or no lift rods depending on your preference👍
