So not to sound dumb here but I have tried doing research on the DeWalt and there evolution of batteries. I bought my first drill/driver and impact driver two years ago. As an individual who doesn't use power tools on the daily I got entry level tools. At the time I got Makita as they seemed to preform better on the entry level than the rest of the major brands at the time of purchase. Anyway, I'm selling them as Makita is harder to find at local stores than DeWalt and some other brands. Also I don't like having multiple brands of battery power tools that I have to keep track of multiple batteries for and Makita's bundles don't impress me very much. Who needs a vacuum and a clunky light? So I went out and got a DeWalt set from a certain orange home improvement big box store that I can expand upon at a later time.... So to my point as this flexvolt stuff is new to me. I see in your video you have what I'm assuming to be an older version and a new version of DeWalts hammer drill at this time late in 2020. So as I think you made your point here the battery really is the big difference. So to that end I do have 2 flexvolt tools a circ saw and an angle grinder. With that being said, is it worth the money to invest in 1 or 2 flexvolt batteries? If so what Ah size do you recommend since they offer a range? I'm not worried about bulking up the tool with a bigger battery either. I plan on using the circ saw quite a bit 2x & OSB stuff like that it's the DCS573 7.25". I would absolutely appreciate your input or anyone else's for that matter.

Thanks for the reply, I haven't even given much thought to the Ah size until I watched that video. I assumed that the bigger the battery the longer I could use it for my tasks. But that puts things into perspective a bit more! I might buy that kit with the 999 for my dad to upgrade him from the age of NiCad or whatever the used before lithium batteries. Thanks again!

20volt saws are very average. Buy a proper 60 flex volt saw with battery and charger combo, as they are beast and in most cases you can do well with 20 volt brushless tools for almost everything else, and yes the flex volt batteries are backwards compatible with 20volt tools. Don't get caught up with all the gimmicks, just stay 20volt and brushless for everything except the saw.

Hmmm... interesting conclusions.... ummm.... I have to wonder if this review is from the point of view of “is it worth it to upgrade from the 996 combo?” Though... because if it’s approached from the point of view that “I don’t have the identical impact driver” and “I have no drill at all” or “the drill it’s replacing is 6 years old mid tier stuff” maybe the conclusion might be different? Maybe ? I don’t know... I think it performed well and the difference in the new battery was visible... but I love your testing techniques man... I think your advice definitely makes our buying choices a lot easier, well done.

I don't get why you say over and over and over again that you're disappointed the kit has the 887. It's basically the current top of their range, has been for years now. The updated 888 version lets you connect to your phone and has push buttons instead of a switch. Oooh. Wow. Killer upgrades there. Maybe it is time for a refresh, but I question the utility of giving it more power ala the flexvolt advantage line. They're already pushing the limits of that tiny 1/4 inch drive and any bits you could put on it. The 887 will drive 6in SPAX screws wicked quick, and make 3in deck screws pull themselves straight through a 2x4 if you blink at the wrong time. I've given my 2 887s hell for years now, and they just ask for more. I really can't imagine what more one would want in *that* form factor. They do make bigger impacts if you need to drive giant lag screws, that's about the only thing out of reach of the little drivers.
@ManCaverTools3 жыл бұрын
I say that because this is a brand new tool, the Dewalt Power Detect has been out for a little while before this came out, why make a tool that is less powerful then the power detect?

@@ManCaverTools Oh, thought you were talking about the impact driver, which to my (admittedly limited) knowledge, hasn't seen a power detect or flexvolt version. It is confusing why they would release newer versions (i.e. ATOMIC) that are lesser powered and built lighter. I agree newer versions should be better. As an aside, I gotta say, Dewalt's marketing is confusing as all get out. 20V Max, Atomic, XR, FLEXVOLT, FLEXVOLT Advantage, POWER DETECT etc. etc. I wish they would start with a clean slate. Maybe Dewalt Homeowner / Dewalt Professional / Dewalt Industrial Grade or Dewalt Awesome, Dewalt Awesomer / Dewalt Awesomest. But then we'd probably Dewalt Max Awesomester Industrial XR/EXP 2.0 FISSION in a few years. Sigh.

Hi Dave! I would have to agree with you. And even though I ‘bleed Orange’ when I get a cut, 🤣 I would go with the ‘Power Detect’ myself. I believe DeWalt has just put some lipstick on the present tools, and made sure the electronics could handle extended runtime using a FlexVolt battery. I routinely use a FlexVolt battery on my little 20 Volt jobsite blower, with no ill effects. If I use it for an extended time, it starts to seem Hot? I also use the 9 amp hour FlexVolt battery in my little 20 volt DeWalt 7&1/4, sliding miter saw, since it is a stationary tool. It runs faster and better with that big battery, which just barely fits in the tool. Hanging a big old FlexVolt battery off a drill, especially an impact, is heavy and cumbersome, and frankly a bit silly! Just my two cents! Thanks Dave Stay safe and Healthy! Peace

I just managed to get this kit for about $270 at my local homeless despot. $299 reduced price + 10% military discount. First cordless drill purchase in 20 some years and the first cordless impact ever (blame my battery anxiety on the old memory prone ni-cad packs of yore). Interestingly enough I got it not because of the new flexvolt batteries, but for dewalts normal 20v batteries. As they have much less control circuitry in the battery itself so you don't get drainage and weird dead battery issues that come along with having a full fledged battery management system in the pack, like in all the other brands I've looked at. Makita is a good example where they look to have one of the best battery design and management systems for maximizing the batteries usable lifespan. But the BMS draws from only one cell. So long term storage ends up over draining that single cell and flagging the battery as dead. This isn't an issue with contractors that regularly use and recharge their batteries. But for a home DIYer that stores their batteries for long periods without any use, it seems the dewalt "dumb" 20v packs are best suited. They also seem to be relatively easy to open up and replace the cells. So you can just replace the individual cells as they go bad and avoid paying out the ass for entire new batteries.

I just saw this and while I appreciate your videos, when it comes to DeWalt I wish you (or someone) would just go through the confusing lines of tools they have. Just pick one tool - Drill-Driver and go through the differences between XR / Power Detect XR / Atomic / 20 Volt Max (non-XR) / 20 Volt Compact / Brushless and also the batteries, 20 Volt / 20 Volt XR / Flex Volt. So many tool reviewers when it comes to DeWalt are all hyperbole, over-the-top “power” reviews, but not giving the consumer a calm and really informative insight to all of this. I know other tool brands have also have different lines, but DeWalt (to me) is the most confusing, sort of like comparing mattresses from one brand because (as you pointed out), often the is a specific model of feature only sold at Lowe’s vs Home Depot vs Amazon.... etc. Also being they are the most “go to” brand that folks look at and compare to. That would be very helpful! Much thanks!

@@ManCaverTools The big DeWalt won’t run as hot as the Gen 3 drill. Milwaukee’s E- service is great, try them out fellas! It’s just they are not as up front as they should be. Heck, most of the Tool companies aren’t either 😂 Milwaukee messed up my fairly new drill, from the servicing of it, and ended up sending me back a brand new one, bare tool, in the factory box. That is the one thing I can say for Milwaukee for sure! Makita service is alright, as long as you use their ‘Jorsey’ facility! This is my 2nd time watching this. The funny part about it is the FlexVolt Advantage is supposed to be even more powerful than the Power Detect , but in reality it's not much better than the dcd996. The good thing is right now the 996 is on sale at a steep discount, the kit with two 5ah batteries and charger is like $143 at some places and its usually around $299 , it is $179 near me , it's worth that just for the batteries alone.
