-------------------------------------------------------------
DEWALT has expanded the 20-volt tool line extensively, working to give each user who might differentiate themselves from others by their battery, a choice of a tool type to purchase. This creates a small amount of confusion but is pretty easy once you see a few things.
The DEWALT FlexVolt Advantage line allows the tools to draw more amps from the larger batteries, and we might be able to say that this tool uses power more efficiently also.
The DEWALT Power Detect line works the best with 20-volt batteries and likes the higher-rated 6 and 8Ah ones giving the tool the most power.
Choosing between these lines can be difficult and it took us a long time to finally figure out what line might be the best for all users. Our videos are not normally 25 minutes long, but this test and review needed every bit of it to come up with the right conclusion.

The truth is , if either of these drills are used in a normal fashion they should give years of dependable service. One thing I really like about all dewalt tools is they let you push the tools a little harder without electronics kicking in " protecting your investment" That flexvolt battery makes for a big drill , I have a 995-887 kit that I bought years ago and they are beat to hell and have never skipped a beat and truth be told I've never felt the 995 lacking for power while using it for the task it was meant to be used.

I think that this was an excellent test and an excellent video- as usual on this channel. However, for those who are unaware, there are drills that some people call right angle drills or stud and joist drills that are designed for running very large bits. Great big machines, easy to identify. Dewalt’s newer stud and joist drill will handle pretty much any wood boring bit easily. Including 6 1/4” holes saws. That being said any of the newer stud and joist drills will handle very large bits fairly easily- that’s what they’re made for.

Hi there. I am from Portugal, and here in Europe i am waiting for the 998 Powerdetect to arrive, but i think due to this pandemic situation it will take a little to arrive, didnt knew that was already release a dcd999. To be quite honest i see no diference between one or the other, i would go for the Power Detect cause battery weight issues. I think an 8 amp battery is already a very heavy battery, and using a flexvolt, i think it would be very tyring to the hands and arms. Thanks for the video ;)

I just bought the 999 kit. Honestly for most people it doesn't make sense to buy the bare tool if you have the extra $100. Home Depot has the bare tool for $179 and the kit for $279 with 6amp charger and 6Ah battery. That battery alone is about $140 and the charger isn't cheap either. These tools are designed to work really well with the battery that is included.

from about 10:09 thru 13:00 is more or less what you came here for. Of the few somewhat ok videos out there so far putting the 998 vs the 999 in thier stock forms (998 with 8ah battery and 999 with flexvolt 6ah battery) i have deduced the Flexvolt advantage may have a bit of a lead on the powerdetect, perhaps at the price of being slightly heavier. If you want the baddest dewalt hammer drill in this line-up the flexvolt advantage may have a bit of an edge.

I say it is the same drill since only Lowes have the Detect , Home depot ask Dewalt to make them a drill with the same functions. So Dewalt took the same drill and just gave it a different name for Home Depot. That why Dewalt didn't make a big deal about the Advantage line.

That's possible. My only argument against that is that the power detect drill has some sort of programming or hardware that allows it to get a boost from the high output batteries that they have in the XR line. If you're using batteries with 18650 cells, it acts the same as a normal XR. If it has the 21700 cells it can utilize them better.

The FA is the most powerful, but only with the 9ah or higher Flexvolt batteries. All that matters in this comparison is the discharge rate of the cells inside the battery packs, and the cells inside the 6ah FV are not good.

The 60v flex volt recip saw is a monster. So is the circular saw. They have considerable more power than the advantage or power detect. Only advantage of power detect is that you get 60% of said power and you can use 20v batteries. But I only buy flex volt batteries these days so it doesn't really matter to me.

I've seen multiple videos with the PD and FA against each other. Both drills had a FA 6ah battery and a 6ah 21700 battery and both drills performed better with the 21700 cell battery. If the FA 42 percent more power claim was true then the FA drill should've been able to keep up or dominate the PD. But bottom line the power detect has that extra something that the flexvolt advantage doesn't. The test were timed in these videos and the proof is there. I feel if the claim by DeWalt flexvolt advantage has more power even though you use a 18650 cell battery it still should beat the power detect

Why does DeWalt always have to confuse people with their battery technology. The flex volt can only use the 60v battery. The flex volt advantage can use 60 and 20. The flex volt advantage was just made to let you use you older 20v batteries. But now anymore powerful then a regular 20v. The power advantage can only use 20v. But I didn't see any difference. You should try the power advantage and the XR.

@melgross 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve never had a problem with any of my DeWalt tools. I did have to change the brushes on one, years ago. Never had noticeable chuck wobble. The new Detect tools REQUIRE the new 8 amp detect battery to get the extra power. I agree with that, having tested my new 998 against my older 996. With the 6 amp battery, they’re about the same. But with the new 8 amp battery, the 998 is very noticeably more powerful, though the 996 is not. The new battery has newer cells that can deliver more power, while the other batteries, with the older cells can’t. They would drastically overheat. The new detect tools sense these new batteries, and allow that extra power to be used. The older drills don’t, and so can’t use it. So it’s important to note that if you buy a bare Detect tool, without that new battery, you won’t get a power and efficiency advantage over the older tool. There is no advantage to using the 9 amp Flexvolt battery in these Detect tools, as it just adds run time, but not higher power draw. As far as I’m aware, no other manufacturer, at this time is using these new batteries.

"With the 6 amp battery, they’re about the same. But with the new 8 amp battery, the 998 is very noticeably more powerful, though the 996 is not " That's interesting because 6,8 and 10 amp batteries all have newer and better 21700 cells so there shouldn't be any difference while using them with 996 and 998 drills unless 8 and 10 amps batteries are somehow different as far as power "detection thing" is concerned or maybe the detection is in the 998(999) tool itself..... I really believe 998 and 999 are the same tools, just different marketing, also hoping 996 is the same but better price but maybe I'm wrong

Then with all the other tools i jus have the flexvolt model. Flexvolt advantage jus seems weird to me jus get the flexvolt. Power detect makes more sense to me. More power out of a more compact battery for a more compact tool. And actually there should jus be 1 system power detect for all 21700 cell batteries. Maybe 60V capable electronics have a bit more wiggling room for more current draw? Since it needs to handle higher voltage with similar load, V=IR, the current scale is inevitably higher than 20V counterpart. So, the 60V capable drill might have a bit thicker(?) cables and electrodes with less resistance. I'm not sure how the voltage regulators are designed inside. So it's just my wild guess!

I never made the video to declare what one you should buy. I just compared the drills and the power. The DCD996 is a super cheap drill and has a ton of power. I guess you have to look at the batteries that come in the kit and the cost and see what one fits you best. Knowing how much better the DCD999 performs with smaller batteries would be what drives my choice as I would not want a huge battery on my drill all day.

No stitches because the cut was not crisp enough; fingers don't cut as well as wood, they shred from a circular saw. Still numb after 20 years. Might get feeling back in the next 20 years or so.

It wasn't real clear to me what DeWalt is doing. Are they repackaging a Flexvolt (sold at Home Depot) into a Power Detect (sold at Lowes) but with the same tool - or vice versa because nobody goes down in model number with the newer and more improved tool? Very confusing. It still is. The tool descriptions, even on the DeWalt website, don't help. Thanks for the video. In the end though it seems that either the least expensive tool wins or the store that is closest to me.

Tore my middle finger open on the inside of the finger when trying to fix a part. It tore on the Milwaukee tool holder on the side of the toolbox. Not a sharp object. Went through a nerve and to the muscle. I do not use particle board as the bits do not like it. I stated in the beginning, I try to work real world stuff and prove the conclusions are right by many tests. Its not easy to always be right, but it gives people more of an idea of what it can do. Like you said, who puts lags in with a drill driver.

Conclusion: always wear gloves and safety gear... If it were a drill instead of an impact probably I wouldn't have a finger by now... It sucks because the wound doesn't stretch making it hard to move my finger... The power detect takes advantage of 21700 cells where older regular XR doesnt see a difference between 18650 and 21700. The 8ah battery is made up of those newer stronger 21700 cells where 1.3, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5ah batteries qre 18650 cells. The new 20v 6ah may have 21700 but i am not positive. The dcd 998 is a dcd 996 with an additional pin at the base and electronics updated to detect the new cells. Not sure on the 999 but I'd imagine it is also basically the same drill with electronics to detect the flexvolt batteries which i believe also use 21700 cells and get the extra boost the same way.

@@WorkshopAddict there very well could be but also as you say in several points in the video it could be the lumber. You should make a stable rig for your tests too. I think that tons of the discrepancies are due to the instability of using the jaws to hold the board. Lay the board across something and screw it down instead of only being held by the centerpoint for balance. Those types of bits are made for drilling into secured structures like the side of a house, not a wobbly 2x12. I do love the videos though

I've had the same drill since 2015 and can attest that it's pretty bad at putting holes in concrete and brick, despite trying various bits and methods of drilling. I bought their dch133b SDS hammer for dedicated concrete/brick drilling and it's absolutely the right tool for the job, drills holes faster than the corded bosch bulldog that I've had for 25 years. Recently bought a new dcd998 to replace my now-erratic dcd985, can't wait to start using it next week!
