*All of these dewalt drills and impacts are not greased correctly from the factory. When I get a new or used one I always open the case, clean out the old cheap grease and grease everything well with synthetic marine grease, which resists moisture. Do this and you'll have a really heavy duty dewalt that'll run forever.*

I will say from what I've saw DeWalt split sells for the 998 and 999 between home Depot and Lowes. That way they aren't in direct competition even though they are almost identical in power and price.

Drill- Packedge in typical box, came with a tool bag (added bonus), two batteries, one charger, drill, and driver. Two words "plenty of Torque" kzbin.infoUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv well I guess that's three. Nice upgrade from current setup. Has belt clips, I don't think I will be using those. Driver and drill were bigger than what I expected but it is an upgrade from the current setup. For the money I would say that this is a great setup for Professionals and DIY/Weekend warriors.

I've had several of the 996 drills for many years now and love them. I work mine very hard drilling through many thick treated poles. What I've learned from any of my dewalt tools is that the brushless tools really don't like getting too hot. Yea I know that no tool really can't handle getting too hot but the brushed motors recover better. The brushless motors start shorting out if they get too hot. Trust me on this one because I've tossed dozens of tools in the trash because of this. My solution is to rotate hot tools with cold ones before its too late. Now don't get me wrong these tools are a beast especially the 996 drill. My worst dewalt tool is the 887 screw gun. I burnt up 13 of these tools just installing decking. I miss the older models I gave away thinking I had just bought a faster and stronger screw gun. The 996 drills for the most part do very well . I have destroyed 3 so far but every time was in the summer when it's tougher to keep the tools cooled down when working them very hard. A good rule to follow when drilling into wood is if you have it in high gear and it only slows down a little you will be fine but if it bogs done enough to take notice to then drop a gear or your just going to burn up your tool. A weak battery will burn up your tools also; especially the drills. Like when in this video the drill slowed down drilling the big hole while the 5 ah battery had 2 bars. My bet is that it was close to only 1 bar. This is where Dewalt really needs at least 4 bars or even better a percent number. No drill will do well in thick wood if the battery is below 40 percent. Note that when drilling thick wood you will get the battery hot and it will get a little hotter just after your done drilling eventually shutting the battery down until it cools.

Just watched this one. I burned up an old brushed Dewalt “cheap combo pack” drill. I think it’s $79 now. I kind of wanted it to go to buy a good tool honestly, and was successful using a 3 inch auger made for flower bulbs. Honestly it did an amazing job for what it was. Happy to have killed the old one, I was researching new half inch hammer drills. On Amazon in Jun of 2022, the 996 was on sale, bare tool only. I have tons of flex volt batts. 996 was $164, 999 was $155. After watching this video, I was amazed at what was possible, both are amazing. I went with the 999, and as a 50 year old home user, pretty sure this will be the last drill purchase of my lifetime. Thanks for the excellent video man…..good job.

I noticed at 10:35 you were drilling with the 996 out on the end of the post well away from the vice and it was binding, but you can see the wood move a little. When you used the 999 you drilled both holes directly over the solid support if the vice. You can push hard and have less movement in the timber doing it that way. Ps when I use these drills depending on where I'm drilling and size of bit, I let the handle press against part of my body so it won't torque out of my hand, or snap a wrist.

I cooked my brand new Dewalt 996B where it started to bleed grease (unknowingly during the job) and although it powered through some very cured 5 inch cement with a 1/2 inch masonry bit like a champ, the 996B was more the well done and burned out. I would not quit and the 996B drained a new fully charged 20 volt battery to dead. Prior to the Dewalt 996B, I had purchased a Bosh battery powered hammer drill that kept shutting down during the same cement job. The Bosch could not power through the same job because it would not commit toolacide like the Dewalt 996B did. So the advice of the video to use a bigger tool when needed is sound advice.

I've see multiple test videos with the power detect and the flexvolt advantage drills. The flexvolt battery was used in both and a 6ah 21700 cell battery was used in both, also these test were timed. The results were that the flexvolt battery gave no more power to either drill like the claim says but the 21700 cell did make a huge difference in both. Think about this, that if the 42 percent more power claim is true then the flexvolt drill should've either kept up with the power detect with the 21700 cell or beat it

No…I DON’T expect for a drill to die because you “pushed” it. There should be appropriate thermal protection built into both the battery packs and the tool, to prevent exactly this from happening. These tools are meant to be “pushed”, every day, that’s what they’re for.

Not without a bunch of inappropriate abuse like getting water or lots of hard dust (metal or heavy masonry) into the motor. Even that sometimes wouldn’t kill stuff. I was running a 7 1/4 direct drive circ-saw from Dewalt, and some water dripped into the motor housing, it started sparking/smoking, then just shut off. Wouldn’t run for about an hr, while it dried out, once dry it just started without a problem.

Then it seems to me that DeWalt upgraded their controller cards to stop the drill before frying the electronics. These upgraded cards are in the DCD998 (Lowes, power detect) and DCD999 (Home Depot, Flexvolt). I don't know if that is true or not but that is how I interpreted this video. Otherwise, there seems to be not much difference between the 3 models.

And the FA dcs999 says it has 42% more power when IT uses the 6.0 FlexVolt battery compared to when IT uses the 5.0ah battery and they never even mention the dcs996 at all. So is DeWalt using some Well Placed Words and Numbers to get us to buy their New drills , when there really isn't that big of a difference between them and the dcd996 when using the right batteries ?? I got the 999 and the best 60 volt circular saw with the big battery so I'm pretty happy with my kit now. I do have the lowest end sawzall but it's fine for most things. And it was on sale for $99. You’ve discovered the fatal flaw to a lot of Dewalt drills and impacts: #1: just like the 887, these tools will not shut down before you cook the motor! #2: using the Flexvolt batteries on 20v tools not only helps cook the tool faster, but also degraded the battery faster as well. Something in the way the batteries are wired causes this when you switch between the different voltages.

Its not bottomed out. The Milwaukee chuck has the end screwed up pretty bad from it slipping and spitting it out. I am just putting it in as far as I can, without coming close to bottoming it out, so there is a place to grip that is not all FUBAR.

Question....I recently purchased a 999 and the ratcheting chuck gets won't loosen properly anytime the it is tightened with the ratcheting feature (clicks). If I stop right before the clicks, the chuck will loosen just fine. If not, the chuck won't loosen it just clicks. So to loosen it I use the drills power to reverse it off and it grinds until it is fully open and then it works perfectly again. Can anyone help with this...is the chuck shot? I can't find a good answer to this anywhere....

Thanks for doing this video, very interesting... I remember seeing a video that VCG did a little while ago where they also caused a drill to stall and smoke while using a Flexvolt. Probably adds power, but maybe to much power. Another channel says the 998 & 999 have larger UWO ratings.
@WorkshopAddict

I am going to assume that the electronics and motor in the new drills can take the amps much better than the 996, making them safer to use with the larger batteries under sever load and giving the new drills more power in the UWO.
