Got the sniffles just watching that long cool descent. Very beautiful road. All your info is interesting in a very practical way and disc brake rub was something that concerned me when I decided to put the Ultegra discs on my new titanium road bike. Still maybe too early to tell at 500km in, but so far absolutely no rubbing and very smooth operation. I may have the best combination of a very stiff frame and my lightweight 62kg.

I did get rubbing issues when the rotors heated up when I installed my Dura-Ace 9100 brakes but I kept cleaning the pistons and working some mineral oil around the edges and that finally stopped. For the last few months I have not had any brake rub noise. Adding more clearance to the pads wouldn't make a difference if the pistons are not retracting as they are meant to do. The way you descended that road SAFA Brian would be proud.

Everytime i had disc rub it was with rotors going untrue. Since i moved away from various shimano ones to the hope floating rotors i never had a problem again. those things just work. i also have a pair of extra thick (2.2mm) ones on my gravel bike from intend b.c. - those pretty much always rub when they get wet because the clearance in the calipers itself is so minimal that any small dust particles hit the calipers. its a bit annoying but i like those discs for added ease of mind when traveling with the bike and wheels off. due to the one piece thickness they are very resistent to bending and also takef all of the heat i could throw into them on a loaded steel gravel/touring bike descent. btw beautiful descent you have there :)

Ok, I guess this vlog _is_ about the change in clearance on the new Dura Ace disk brakes, but... I think that by just putting that as the title you might be putting a limit on how many people [that get the exhilarating joy the speed and the adrenaline rush of descending on a bike can give you] get to enjoy the pleasure of doing a spectacular Japanese mountain road descent with you virtually. It really is terrific, those roads are perfect for that, those brakes are good, and so are you (man, I wouldn't want to "take unnecessary risks" as you say either, but on many of those corners I would have no option but to encroach on the other lane, and then some...) 🙏 ROJ ps. Any thoughts on brake feel? Is it the same as with the previous ones? Any idea if you can use old shifters with those new calipers?
@ridesofjapan3 жыл бұрын
Before 9270 I was exclusively riding GRX for a month or two which also has servo wave tech, they feel very similar to that. But I wouldn’t say it’s a huge difference for the old DA… nothing I need “adjusting” to but the lever is super light until the pads hit the rotor, from there you could argue there is better modulation, but noting that will totally change how you brake or anything. You can connect the calipers for sure since they use the same hoses, but if they require a lever with servo wave or not for proper operation I can’t say.

@@ridesofjapan Yes. 90%+ of the road riders on these fancy racing bikes with hydro disc brakes with integrated cables don't ride in the rain with that bike - thus negating the only advantage of disc brakes over rim brakes on road bikes. In the dry, rim brakes stop just as well as disc brakes. So really there is no point in disc brakes on road bikes because there is no advantage for normal "joes" who don't ride in the rain with the obvious disadvantages - heavier, cost more, less aero, maintenance nightmare.

right - more questions (I hope you see this one, as i am curious): You have been using the Panaracer Gravelking Slicks afair. What's your verdict in terms of slipping & grip on wet roads? I am concerned of not having enough traction and risking an accident..
@ridesofjapan3 жыл бұрын
First, I’m a fair weather cyclist, and the few times I’ve been out in the wet I always take it very easy and don’t push my equipment anywhere near any their limits. With that said since I only used GK slicks 32 and larger in the last couple of years and I always run very low pressures and never felt a lack of grip compared to any other tire I’ve used. But again always dial it back when conditions are sketchy, I’m not racing anyone so :)

I don’t have the GRX calipers, but they are the same as the regular Ultegra level calipers. The difference on GRX is in the lever (di2 levers) which use the servo wave technology that they also use on the new dura ace and Ultegra 12speed levers, so they “feel” very similar in that way.
