New E53 Coupé - Mr AMG on the first Hybrid AMG!

So following our review of the Facelift C43, we now must discover the newest member of the entry level AMGs, and the most powerful E Coupe you can get: the AMG E53!
Previously we had the E43, which had the same V6 bi-turbo 4matic set up as the C43, but this is not a rebadging, this is a whole new drive train and it’s actually the first AMG hybrid car to be released! Mercedes’ Electric brand is called “ EQ “, and this car marries EQ power to a new inline 6 turbo engine, the same one seen in the CLS 450, but modified by AMG.
It’s thus part of A NEWLY formed hybrid family, of which the AMG Project ONE Hypercar sits at the top of. Expect the New A45S to also come with EQ power, as it’s rumoured to be developed at the AMG performance powertrains, where the Project ONE and F1 cars are made.
This “53” set up is also in the CLS and upcoming AMG GT 4 door, so an important first experience.

I worked as a test driver for MB and we were testing these engines. One thing the electric motor/starter/alternator is really beneficial is when you stop at a red light with stop/start engaged. Me personally I hate this feature on cars for number of reasons but with this electric motor you don’t even know when your car shut off and starts back up, because the starts are so seamless. The engine just starts turning. You don’t hear the starter sound. Not like with regular starter when it makes starter noise and car shakes. With this new set-up I actually liked stop/start function and kept it engaged at all times. And it doesn’t seem like my car is broken and keeps dying on me and I need to keep re starting it 😃. In my opinion this is really revolutionary and Mercedes killed it. On top of that these cars are gorgeous and drive like a dream. They have enough punch and believe me you don’t need the V8 AMG. This is good enough for daily driver and then some.

I have the 2019 E350 Saloon with EQ Boost. While there isn’t any ‘starter’ sound, there is definitely some shaking of the car when the engine starts again.

@@jackyharuhiko 6 cilinder runs more stable than 4 cilinder and lower in rpm. That's why you probably felt some shaking in your E350.

I drove pretty much every AMG out there. I honestly have to say the E53 Coupe is probably my favorite AMG at the moment. You don't need an S63 Coupe. The E53 is the perfect middle between to small and to big. And it drives like a beast! I love it! Trust me you don't need more power than that. Its such a fantastic car. Really remarkable....

I agree! Unless you’re racing or tracking it all the time, you don’t need more power on everyday driving that’s for sure. You can get yourself in plenty of trouble w the 53. I’m loving mine.

problem there would be that it would be too close to the s 63 coupe. it would amost make no sense to get a s500 or s63 coupe over an e63 coupe. And that´s not only an issue regarding future sales, but also people who bought an s coupe could be pissed, because they paid more and now people can get the same for less

In Germany there is a perfomance Exhaust for the E53, you just have to wait 4 months on top of the regular time. I wanted the Exhaust but was not willing to wait 7 months in total so I went without it

Can someone tell me what the difference would be WITH a amg performance exhaust option? Since the car in this video clearly opens the exhaust valves in sport plus mode i guess with the option you just get "a button" to do this manually, so it works in comfort mode as well... or would there be morre difference than just the added button? Any videos online of an e53 WITH the exhaust option? The option code is u78 in the mercedes configurator list

E 53 AMG configurator in Europe: AMG Performance exhaust system switchable 1,428.00 euros With 2 variably adjustable exhaust flaps, the sound adapts to the selected driving program. In addition, the sound characteristics can be changed by pressing a button. This enables a wide range of background noise, from comfortable to highly emotional.

Awesome Video. You made me look at these and buy one, abet a used version a few years later. Just picked up a 19 build with 40k on the Clock in Aus. Car has the Exhaust button on the center console. Maybe the UK versions were noise restricted? This thing sounds fantastic. First AMG and loving it. Jeckle and Hyde car for sure. Probably not the best on a track, but for 99% of what people buy these for would be Luxury with some fun at a push of a button. With the Pops and Bangs you get out of the exhaust I'm surprised it passes the EPA sound limits. You never get tired of the soundtrack and it brings a smile and a little chuckle every time I drive it! @ 4.4s 0-100km its surprisingly quick also.

At about 15:00 you first mention the exhaust. I have great news! There's a hidden feature. When in Comfort setting, pull up on the downshift paddle, then hit the start button. It gives you the Sport + sound in Comfort mode. (Holding the shift lever and pressing the start button will be awkward on your righthand drive car. But it works.)

There would never be an E63 amg Coupe...because it doesn't have its place within the other models. It will cannibalize sales from other AMG Models. Imagine an 600+ hp E63 amg coupe being faster around a track against an AMG GT..or even GTR. then AMG GTs will loose their purpose.

Inline 6 is a classic Mercedes configuration,glad to see it back. The 3v SOHC V6 was terribly unrefined compared to the I6 that preceeded it. Also don't forget AMG has a history with I6s in its early models, many W124 AMGs were based on the 300 E , with displacement increased to 3.4 and 3.6 litres.

Best engines are I6 from merc, The legendary M103 that has been tested to hold over 1000hp with stock internals. OM606 that later has became know as the ST = Super turbo, with numbers like 500hp and 900Nm from that 24v inline 6 diesel with 4 simple mods new 8mm pump, new cooler, tranny internals upgrade and holset hx40.

which is better handles C43 coupe or E53 coupe? And when you drive C43 in comfy mode is it as comfy as E53? i want a daily coupe, no track, only city drive! And i can buy E 400 coupe, make suspension tuned and get brabus exhaust pipes and get better car than E53. Is an AMG today is just for sound? LOL. M in BMW makes cars handle superb. Nice review. I wonder that I have seen competitor reviews who captured the sound in way that it is more likable somehow. Regarding the EQ Boost you are explaining that the additional electric turbo charger is delivering these extra power and torque. From what I understand from mercedes and other reviews it should be the integrated starter generator instead. It directly adds the EQ boost torque to the drive train. The electric turbo charger on the other hand is helping the petrol engine to develop power at low revs when the traditional turbo is not. But only a direct electric drive is having the characteristic of delivering a quite high additional torque and comparably low additional power at the same time.

Onkel Kunibert You are 100% right about the power delivery. The e motor adds that additional torque directly to the transmission. The e turbo(actually an e supercharger) provides instant boost to the petrol engine until the conventional turbo spools up.

I guess one thing that I wonder is how you "felt the weight" so much? My 2015 S550 Coupe (600 lb. heavier) has that generation air suspension and the car totally drives smaller than it is. Very little body lean even in "spirited" Texas Hill Country drives. NOT a back road killer for sure but not bad for a 4800 lb. car. So the 4200 lb. E53 with a newer generation air suspension doesn't flatten the car out in the hard cornering? There are 3 steps to the air suspension and it is automatically supposed to make for a better, softer and flatter windy road driving experience? Love the Blue and you make great videos...

Nice review, mate, well done! Totally agree on the looks. It looks so mean, yet classy, timeless from the start, in a way like the 1st gen A5. Every time I see the E Coupé I wanna do bad things to it, so gorgeous. Sadly, it just doesn't deliver the sound and sound is such an important part of the emotions of driving. I'd rather have an E500 and that V8 rumble, even if that means you can't beat the S5's and 440i's of this world. How often can you unleash its potential in the real world? But a V8 soundtrack - you'll enjoy every single day, even when you just pop to the shops.

Hi RBR and anyone else considering this car. Just wanted to give a live update on the options - or should I say non options - having been frozen out of the configurator for at least 3 months for reasons nobody representing MB in the UK have been able to offer. So here we go, if you were to build and order an E53 AMG today you still would not get : MBUX; or any upholstery colour other than black and tan (best of the bad bunch), black and red or black with red stitching as in this review, nor a performance exhaust. The other thing that puzzles me (actually it bugs me) is that in the UK if you spec the night pack all that changes are the window surrounds. The exhaust tip and diffuser trim remain bright or matt chrome. This is at odds with the E53s sold on the continent or in North America including Canada where all the external trim save for the AMG double grill trim are blacked out.. Why do MB marketeers think it is OK to decide what UK customers want ? These may appear to be minor points but I am pitting this car alongside the BMW 8 series coupe and none of these issues arise..
