New E63S VS Old E63S : Can the Real AMG Hammer please stand up?!

RBR VS Mode Episodes are coming at you with a vengeance!! After the awesome Taycan 4S vs RWD episode, it’s time to do a proper petrolhead hero car battle : #AMG E63S vs E63S. Old vs New! Loud vs Subdued. Analog vs Digital!
Not a huge amount has changed technically speaking as far as performance goes on the E63S. It maintains the brutal 4.0 V8 bi turbo, and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G. And of course the famed AMG 4matic+ 100% variable all wheel drive system with drift mode. Both E 63 S produce 612 BHP, 850NM and 0-60 in 3.4 - but we test both to be way quicker, so stick around for the launch controls!
Minor differences: the interior gets a new where and the awesome MBUX, and the facelift gets AMG dynamics, which influences the ESP system based on your requirements or driver skill. And the main bit is adjustments to the AMG ride control suspension, which has been modified to be more comfortable. Oh, and the exhaust is now muted due to EU regs since then.
That means, for the AMG Addict, the prefacelift E63S is basically the same car, just louder, less interior tech and arguably a more aggressive design!!

Great vid Raz. Love my pre face lift E63s, instead of changing it after two years of ownership I have gone with downpipes and a map to 740bhp and 1100nm. I have no idea what I'll replace this car with as its simply so good at everything. One major gripe for me though, is spec and additional features. Why on Earth do Mercedes not let UK customers spec rear entertainment, massage or cooled seats, and a heated steering wheel - all of which are available on US cars as example (not so sure on the heated wheel but still!). An M5 LCI with the Ultimate pack trumps the E63s in terms of toys which is frustrating. Still.. I love mine to bits!

Hi, E63S owner here. What a great review - thanks for sharing it and for being balanced in the assessment of the two cars. I bought my 2018 'Premium Plus' brand new (so obviously a pre-facelift - see my profile pic) and remain really pleased with it. Being a mug for anything AMG, naturally I checked out the facelift - I was aware of the slightly less excting engine note, but what also put me off was the frontal appearance, which to me looks much softer - I definitely agree the pre-face lift looks more muscular. The enhanced info tech I can live without - when my car was being serviced, I was loaned a high-end Merc SUV which came with the latest technology - and I really didn't like it, despite having a few days to play with it. Its the driving feel and expeirence that is more important to me. My 2018 feels similar to an E39 M5, obviously way quicker and more advanced. I don't doubt the slightly more refined ride quality in the face lift, but I'm unconcerned by that too - it's an E63S, it shouldn't ride like an E350 and besides I like the enhanced feel it provides. Mine has the bucket seats and I'm a well-built 6-footer and can honestly say that I've never felt uncomfortable, even after many hours of driving. So if anyone is concerned the pre-facelift buckets, don't be - they are far more comfortable than they might look. So I really can't see any reason to change my car, I absolutely love it. However, despite being almost fully optioned, it doesn't mean I wouldn't be averse to upgrading certain aspects of it. Mine came with the Burmester sound system - can this be upgraded to the high-end version, for example. I was interested to gather from the video that it would be possible to change the steering wheel for that in the late pre-facelift car. My original steering wheel was replaced under warranty as the part of the stitching was coming apart (in a the hardly-touched 11 o' clock position - very strange). I asked for the latest wheel, but was told by Mercedes that it was not compatible. That seems untrue judging by the review, but then Mercedes aren't the most helpful company around. Could you (or anyone else) let me know of what else might be upgradeable, please. I draw the line at exhausts and remaps, etc. The only after market product that doesn't trigger engine warning lights is the Brabus example, but to my ears, isn't much better in terms of sound given the amount it csts (rather alot...). Anyway, mine sounds great as it is and is as fast as you could want to go. Any thoughts welcome.

You can change completely everything to your pre facelift to the facelift ones. Steering wheel, MBUX, Burmester sound system, even headlights, taillights, new bumpers. Mercedes does not do that of course.

I have the same e63s, you can get a new steering wheel and carbon fibre everything, theres lots of websites for modifications and upgrades but beware, they're more than likely aftermarket parts

Absoluetly brilliant video!! I personally think the pre-facelift strikes the perfect balance by being sharp, muscular and agressive while remaining effortlessly elegant and beautiful. I also want to add that although the pre-facelift variant does not have MBUX, you still have a voice controlled assistant system called Linguatronic. It has over 450 lines of voice commands that it can recognise and react to. e.g., you can change the ambient lighting, turn the A/C on or off, change the temperature, fan speed, you can even turn lights on and off just by saying it. The main difference is that it isn't as smart as the new voice assistant and is summoned or cancelled at the flick of a switch rather than a "Hey Mercedes".

Those AMG Performance Seats are some of the best on the market. Tried it on GT53, it's comfortable enough for long trip or in lengthy traffic but very supportive when things get spicy. Maybe not in the same level as the Recaro Pole Position buckets on the likes of GT R PRO but for daily use it is the perfect balance.

I just traded my 2019 C63s for a low mileage 2018 E63s for the sole reason of getting the pops and crackles back. It was startling how quieter the 2019 was vs. my 2017 C63s. The only time you could get a hint of them was when downshifting at 5500 rpm. When I mentioned it to the service rep they just looked at me. That's not a problem any more. Couldn't be happier with the purchase!

That's why cars made up to 2018 are slowling becoming more popular than post 2018 cars, as 2018 is when those regulations took effect for most car brands in the EU.

Yeah, I agree. The front of the pre-facelift is so much more aggressive. The facelifted look a bit doll. But on the back the newer is much better. It looks more like the pre-facelifted estate on the lights.

MBUX is incredible - i think different situations warrant different inputs. standing still ill use the track pad or touchscreen for NAV whilst driving, the steering wheel is perfect for music control

Great review not only showing the restrictions the EU have imposed but also Mercedes lack of options for new top level cars. My new AMG GT4 door had very few configurable options. These are sold in packages forcing the customer to buy unrelated items: if I want heads up display I have to have night pack! If I want the 63s I can’t have split folding rear seats... there’s no way to personalise my car like Porsche or Bentley. Good car as it is, It could be so much better.

Owner here. My first car was m3 e92, beautifull v8 sound, but in 2018 I bought from my good friend this masterpiece. Since then she always deliver me the same joy as at the time I first sat in my e63s. Mad gorgeous car, incredible performance and a lot of adrenaline always, always. @3:10 pre-facelift, the swoop up from the side of the grille up through the headlight and into the front wheel arches gives it a more squat ready to roar look. Personally I don't like the A grille compared to smiley face or whatever the old one was called.

I always thought the pre-facelift looked ungainly, too in your face. But I’m looking at the two of them, the facelift exterior does looks a touch watered-down, maybe it’s because its too familiar now. It could be from the A45S, the GT 4-door, maybe the new C63 as well. I can’t decide between the two, my ideal E63 will be the facelift with the front of the pre-facelift, the facelift interior with MBUX and a slightly modified exhaust. The lack of the AMG Performance Seats doesn’t bother me too much…. I think Raz, your verdict has an emotional side to it, remembering how revolutionary that pre-facelift was when it came out, I think it made BMW delay the new M5 to incorporate M X-Drive to match the 4-MATIC + of the Mercedes.

I really wished they would go back to the old design of classic mercs. Had a E500 for long time and the classic grille was nice and the lines were beautifully clean. As the S class is the only model to keep the iconic grille would be nice to see it make a comeback.
