Ray Parker Jr. wrote this back in the '70s when he was a member of the funk/R&B vocal group Raydio, but he never recorded it. It debuted in 1983 when it was covered by teenage Jamaican reggae singer Junior Tucker. It didn't become a hit until New Edition released their version the following year. You can also find Junior Tucker's version on YT.

Empress, me too you know that like that sweet candy cheesy sound. This is a 80s R&B classic. You know this is from back in the day, a telephone man, pay phones , Jheri curls and Members Only 😂. A New Edition staple that I see that they still perform to this day. It’s still a 🔥🔥cookout classic.

The precise moment we all understood that Bobby's charisma was off the motherfuckin charts. He is pure, unadulterated emotion.

Love me some new edition I think I think I've seen them two or three times. I am so glad Bobby survived bless his poor heart.. we were really scared for him for a minute..okay a while... I saw the new edition story and I was very angry. I refuse to believe their manager told ralph his first solo album could be the new Purple Rain😂😂 I laughed so hard and scared my husband.

***RONNIE, BOBBY, RICKY, & MIKE..RALPH TOO...TRIVIA TIME!** ...hold the LINE...(3:09)... - ....Oh, this CUTE tune! ....this was the 2nd single from New Edition's self-titled major label debut (November 1984); they were on the Warlock label in 1983 for the "Candy Girl" Album, and moved to MCA.....where the infamous, "..$500 & a VCR..." comment came from...... .....the 1st single, "Cool It Now" was A MAMMOTH success (#1 R&B / #4 Pop / #9 Dance) (Jan., 1985), and this tune was the follow-up...It was produced by the "Ghostbuster" himself, RAY PARKER JR., who also was a busy Boy, then..... (6:18)... ....as expected, the tune hit#1 R&B / #12 Pop, Feb., 1985 (It couldn't go Top Ten because Sheena Easton"s "Sugarwalls" shot over them, that week), and they became certified STARS......with, a particular standout..... - *....BOBBY!* (3:31) ....Bobby's 'street' attitude was LOVED by Ebony Girls, and this tune helped him become the breakout Star; Ralph was the "Eddie Kendricks" of the Group (1:24), but Bobby became the "David Ruffin" of the Group (4:04).... He proved that, LATER, too.............. (5:38).....

I just have to laugh that this song was held back from being top 10 by Sugarwalls 😂🤣. You can’t have two more opposite songs as far as content 😂

A NYC that no longer exists. I never thought I'd be nostalgic for pay phones and Ma Bell. I never knew Ray Parker Jr. wrote this. It makes sense that Bobby was featured on this and would sing ”On MyOwn”, which RP Jr. also wrote. I love NE. Everyone loved Ralph, but Mike was mine😊

loved this song empress>>The era when denim and leather jackets made a revival amongst many other fashions>> an era that brings back so much nostalgia for me in a time that seemed so much more simplistic without all the needless distractions everywhere 🙂

Again, the signature sound of Ray Parker Jr, we all know exactly who wrote and produced this the first time we heard it.

Ray Parker Jr. did two songs on Miss Ross on her '83 ROSS album (that came out the summer of Central Park concert). The songs are "Love or Loneliness" (which gives this tempo - and all the Ray Parker Jr. feels) + "Up Front" on which Ross and Ray rock it out like his "The Other Woman". They were calling Ray for a minute in there. LOL...

When it looks like Ralph is singing that “onnnnn meeeee” in the beginning that’s actually Bobby. When they would perform this live at that time Bobby did that part

LOVE LOVE LOVE your reaction Empress!! That is too funny about your Mom. I am so glad this was your first time seeing the video. As a child of the 80s and growing up with MTV I always like to see your video reactions as well 😁 This song along with Cool it Now are my favs from them and I still know every word to these songs today lol. It’s been a while since I watched the video so forgot all the 80s cheesiness but still fun!!

The song is goofy, IMO. The overt denial and wordplay used to downplay that his girlfriend lost interest, is avoiding him, and seeing some other dude is tedious to sit through. If I were Mr. Telephone Man, I would have told him the truth: that she was cheating on his punk ass. What adds to the song's silliness is Bobby acting like it was HIS "moment," despite all of them (save Devoe) having near equal time on it. Honestly, I don't have much use for pre-Johnny N.E. Their teenybopper/bubblegum phase was cheesy.
