As an RV technician I have no idea why they continue using those rooftop units. They are extremely inefficient as the evaporator is literally housed outside. So most of the heat ends up getting collected from outside just to be exhausted again outside 🤦

I've installed 3 of the DIY Mr. Cool 1 1/2 ton units in both my home and RV Park office. It does get easier to install after the first one. I purchased all 3 Mr Cool units at Lowes for $1500 each. It's a better option to go with Mr Cool considering the price advantage using DIY method. The cost advantage give you a simple choice when the unit breaks down. It's money ahead to replace than to get a HVAC company to work on it. On the issue of line sets, I suggest you match the line set distance between the indoor and exterior so you don't have the ugly line set coiled up, or install a garden hose hanger for the excess line set and use a RV Tire cover to hide and protect the line set. I've also use a vinyl fire hose as a line set cover for protection and it makes a very nice finished look.

Others have posted online but everyone leaves out the important details. For instance, on a 12 volt system ...how many watts of solar panels need to be installed to make it function? It is very frustrating that the videos, even Will's video on running the little 5000 BTU 500 watt window a/c does not indicate how may watts of solar panels to dedicate to the unit. We are beginners and need to know this. EG4 does not answer their phone or emails and their downloads don't say either...so frustrating!

I have 4 of the smaller pioneer units. The lines were not precharged, but the outdoor unit was. They do say to run vacuum on the system to test for leaks as well as getting air out before opening the valves on the unit. I love them. They work great. My only issue is they do not connect to WiFi. I’m a trucker. I would like to turn the temp down when I’m almost home. Although they don’t take long to cool down, they are better at maintaining a temperature. Since they don’t use much electricity, I just turn them up a few degrees when I’m gone and let them run. Also they sell decorative covers for the lines. At least coming down the wall. Then you can secure the remaining coil behind the unit.

I’m gonna do the install myself but my neighbor is an HVAC tech and he’s gonna pull a vac and chary it and inspect it all for me to be sure it’s right. Will, when you said thousands of dollars to recharge system, it reminded me of the many vehicles that I recharged using Dust off (R152a) refrigerant only about 3 dollars a can and works excellent. What would be an interesting experiment is measuring the efficiency of R152a vs R410a. R152a has a low molecular weight, causing lower high pressures. I would guess a measurable increase in efficiency

So a good product for custom line-sets is something Pioneer makes. It's called Kwik-E-Vac. It's a can of ethanol and R-152a (Difluoroethane), which is an environmentally friendly HFC which mixes well with R-410a. You connect the line set and leave one side open. You then connect the can to the line set port and flush the lines. Then you seal the system while the refrigerant is still expanding and then pressurize it with the can to test for leaks. The small amount of R-152a then just (very slightly) dissolves in the R-410a. Pioneer basically shows that the small amount of R-152a in there makes no measurable difference in performance or function.

I just installed a Mr cool 12k diy unit into my 42ft RV. It was relatively easy to install with the complexity coming from the RV install since rvs are built with such thin walls and floors. Put the outdoor unit in the generator port under the 5th wheel. Open the baggage door for ac, close it to protect it during travel. It pulls cool air from under the RV and pushes what little hot air it outputs towards the front. Thankfully no short cycling which was a concern prior to install My RV had a 15k and 12k roof mount units factory but in weather over 90° they struggled to maintain 70° for the 500ish sqft space. This small minislip is powered by a 30amp extension cord plugged direct into the meter box when an extra port is available at the campground or it can fairly easily run off the factory 50amp wiring. Just can't use the microwave at the same time. Solar is still beyond my grasp because I don't believe I have enough usable roof space to keep up with my use. On top of batteries/inverters, charge controllers get heavy fast in an RV.

The 12K BTU hybrid mini split has a VOC (Open Circuit Voltage) of *380V* max for the photovoltaic DC array. That's 8 x (24V - 72 cells - *44.6VOC)* solar panels, but only 7 in mild winter, when panels are more efficient and voltage 10% higher. Maybe only 6 in colder winters, this needs to be computed locally so it does not void the warranty. These panels need to be mounted in series, to add up voltage, different types of solar panels have different VOC and amps. A solar panel or a series of them is typically around 10A, within range of the 12A max ISC (Short Circuit Current) of the mini split, so adding a second series in parallel to double the amps would output way too much amps and add fire when you want ice... I thought it would be more efficient to power the heat pump directly with photovoltaic DC, because there would be less power conversion losses, but this hybrid mini split is actually only 21 SEER2, compared with the regular 115V AC one at 28.5 SEER2. So I wonder if it's not better to get the regular 115V AC mini split and a regular PV inverter. It's $150 more expensive, but it would pay off handsomely in the long run. But unless I am reading the specs sheet wrong, 52db is hugely noisy for an A/C: It's only 25dB max legally in France, for instance, so most A/C exterior units on the market there are rated at around 23dB. Imagine in a small village if all houses emitted 50dB, let alone 52, because decibels are an exponential, not a linear progression. Imperial vs. metric decibels? 😃

I'm not understanding the advantage of the hybrid heat pumps for the average solar power enthusiast. I'm guessing the solar panels would be dedicated to the heat pump and not also connected to a charge controller and batteries. If the heat pump is on, say, 50% of the time then the solar power produced during the other 50% is wasted. Am I understanding this correctly? If someone were only wanting to power the heat pump, I can see the benefit because it'll avoid all the other components of a typical solar system.

Fairly large solar array with two racks of battery from EG4 and inverter wanting to put in an AC unit for a couple of months of the year is all we really need it. Looking for a suggestion, get the offgrid model or the AC plug-in which is still off grid for us in the summertime. We have plenty of excess power for the days or long. You should cover the external units from the sunlight. This way the efficiency should improve. My knowledge is that so many units make your set less efficient that one large unit with several fancoils connected. A final idea, why you don't provide a dc line from the batteries rack directly to this new external unit? During daylight pv provides electricity and during sunset batteries kick in.

Funny thing is it's a old camper too lol. It's a 93 model 30 foot holiday rambler. It's been kept indoors all its life and was never rained on until I bought it from an older couple. When I found out I had stage 4 cancer me and the wife wanted to know that no matter what that we would be able to have power and live comfortably while we travel. We live in this semi truck most the time doing long haul trucking but when we are not in this truck we are in the camper. It's a Strange way to live I guess but it's fun and we love it. How much solar power you need for that 12k btu at 28 seer? I'm guessing about 600-800w (But obviously far higher peak) would do the trick since it takes about 1200-1400 for a similar unit I have that's only 19 seer but if you can confirm that'd be great.

Great vid & review Will. To be fair on ‘Old Mate’, any joins in gas fittings: welded, flared, cliplocked or other can be problematic, even for good professional fitters for reasons they may not always be able to control; age, vibrations, accidental knocks, poor flare fittings quality & of course incorrect torque. I would like to see the manufacturers of these units add a DC interface/posts so we could also connect a 12v, 24v or 48v battery for extra runtimes, to help overcome shading issues and make use of any excess solar that may be available on a given array, as often these units are using much less power than their pv array is able to provide. Imagine if u have a 4wd, camper, caravan, etc, with aux battery power available, parked under an awning or near one of these units around ur house/shed/guest house, you could potentially plug in to the AC unit to make better use of those batteries and keep them maintenance charged at the same time, while enjoying extended periods of aircon after sundown. Cheers

@@WillProwseTo add my anecdotal evidence to your uncertainty: About ten years ago I did my very first two ductless split installs with extra line set coiled vertically behind the outdoor unit after our initial trainer (the distributor) misinformed us that a minimum of 10’ of line set was required between the units and told us the vertical coiling was the proper solution for closer runs. Neither have ever had any compressor problems to this day. We stopped doing coils for close runs after that only because a subsequent training informed us the extra line set length was actually unnecessary. I suspect the oil trap affect may have applied more to the lower pressures the old R22 systems used and the higher pressures of the R410 systems may force the oil to keep moving along.

Hi Will. Off topic but just wanted to let you know that I contacted Renogy customer service a few days ago about a 10W solar trickle charger that died and ruined an expensive AGM pure lead battery in my cabin. Their overseas based service wasted 2 or 3 hours, multiple phone calls, receipts and photos, of my time, gave me no help on even its 25 year output warranty - all that I was asking for, and insinuated that I don't know how to prove to them that I know how to use a simple volt/ohm meter (I'm a registered professional engineer). I also have 2 of their 100W solar panels. I hope I never need assistance with those. In my opinion, a good company to steer clear of. Enjoy your videos very much. Thank you.
