Get ready for Time Team's first brand new episodes of 2024!
For our latest three-day dig, Time Team joins forces with the people of Modbury to uncover their dramatic history. We hunt for clues throughout the town, in attics in living rooms, and under brand new lawns. We're looking for for evidence of Civil Wars that raged through the town in the 17th century.
Time Team are joined by Jim Stetson, whose family sat at the heart of the community before they left for America to find their fortune making hats. But will we piece together the dramatic ups and downs of Modbury and its fascinating history? We have just one day left to do it!
Join us for the official three-part premieres, right here on the Time Team Official KZbin channel:
Day One: • NEW EPISODE | Day 1: ...

Stewart is such a trooper and so dedicated to time team and his landscape histories. Don't know how old the man is now but by now most would be rocking on the porch dottling the grand kids. So good to see teaching going on with the tried and true archeologists. Just warms my heart to see things progressing into the future.

I discovered Timeteam about 3 years ago. I've been hooked ever since. I've bingewatched all 18 or 20 seasons. From the time when Tony Robinson had long hair and an earring to being bald. I've enjoyed every episode and now a Patreon. There is amazing archeology around the world, all shedding light of the past. England has done something very unique. They brought archeology to people's doorstep. They have help create such a sence of community in an ever more distant world. I wonder how communities would change all over Europe if they did the same. Would they feel more connected instead of displaced, turning their once thriving cities into ghost towns?

I would like to see way more of Stewarts work. He can tell us so much from reading the landscape, yet he seems to often only get the footnotes. Now, I don't know how much he manages to actually find for every episode, but it would also be interesting listening to him how he is working when interpreting the landscape and its use over time. How about a Stewart Ainsworth special where he gets to talk about his favourite work and locations?

Modbury is a nice town, just down the road from me. Never spent much time there, for many people its just a high street you drive through on the way to somewhere. My forklift truck training was held there a year ago, gave me the chance to wander the back streets. That gave me a new appreciation of the place, and this episode has propelled that even further, thank you.

Fascinating info on Iron Age era, I had suspected that Runaway Lane could have been a much earlier trackway predating even Saxon/Norman mott-n-bailey Modbury, perhaps eroded by stormwater runoff down the slope but I couldn't explain such a deep cut- so glad you tied it to later 18thC earthworks, makes so much more sense, even as the lay of the land looks almost Tolkeinesque, it couldn't have been Ringwraiths or Orcs that made that ha ha !

So the evidence for the Battle(s) of Modbury is two bullets (one of which might be from hunting), the apparent post-Restoration remodelling of the village/town, and some disparate accounts that vary wildly regarding scale and composition of the armies. Sir Basil Grenville, the Royalist commander states '.... our loss at Modbury was little the enemy's great. We had not ten men slain; the enemy about 300, some say 500, and they retreated safe to us.' The Parliamentarian _Perfect Diurnal_ claims that the Royalists fled leaving five artillery pieces and around 1,000 muskets whilst Parliament suffered seven casualties. [Source:- Laurence Spring - _The Armies Of Sir Ralph Hopton_ p.131]. Great set of programmes, look forward to more.

Joan Champernowne became Lady Denny. Sir Anthony Denny was Groom of the Stool for Henry VIII. Benedict Lee, my 11 x GGF, was Captain of the King's Guards. Both men were permanently in attendance to the King. Sir Anthony Lee, Benedict's older half brother married Margaret Wyatt, Lady in Waiting to Anne Boleyn. She picked up Anne's head. It is Believed Katherine was Joan's sister. Sir Anthony Denny attended St. John's Oxford. The Lee sons also attended St. John's.
