Ah now I see what happened, Phil met his old friend John Gayter at the Modbury Inn at the top of Brownston street almost across the road from Traine House and together they drank John's winnings of 15 0r 20 pints of Ale from his bet with Matt.Maybe he'll be ok to dig a massive trench in the garden of my old house South Hayes on church house almost opposite Moon lane, just down the hill a bit. My granny Trinick always used to say that the house that burnt down before the war was a wing of an old Champrernowne houuse andgoingby thestuff that was rescued from the fire was stored in the old washhouse at the back it was certainly old . Roll on episode 3 this was an exciting cliffhanger episode,Well done Time Team .Perhaps Helen will find thePriory and even another gold coin to match the one she discovered way back in TimeTeam days, lets hope so .

At 5:27 Champernowne was a courthouse it would have a courtyard and gatehouse. Now I'm off to go down a rabbit hole in researching 'courthouse' and 'courtyard'. Had never thought about the origins of the word courtyard in relation to anything much less a courthouse. Loving the maps and how it all ties in. Enjoyed that in the original Time Team but these are much more effective. While it so great to have each day be an episode an hour would be so much better than 36 minutes with ads. Hope the dendro results are fantastic.

My local church has some similar markings on its pillars. Its a 900+ y/o church called Felkirk in Yorkshire. They originally held the pews for the Lords of the Manor, and there was another for musicians and an organ. Its has some pretty scary to look at cracks in the walls above the arches although they are safe-ish lol. Felkirk is a much smaller church though. They have a crypt for the Monckton family hidden under the aisle.

I'm still trying toward out Gus' s claim of "12000 men fighting in the streets of Modbury' - the main road is wide enough for about 40 shoulder to shoulder!

It's quite a large engagement by English Civil War standards as well. Using some principles laid out in battlefield manuals from the era I can work out how that many men could have been crammed into such an apparently small area. What I'm struggling with is Modbury being deep in the heart of the Royalist South-West yet the account we're being presented with is of Parliamentary dominance. Okay 1642 is the year it all kicks off so there are anomalies across the country yet something of this scale should feature in the histories. After all most of the famous battles fought in the South-West between Hopton and Waller are smaller than this one. Addendum:- I have found a few lines referencing fighting in Modbury but not on the scale suggested. Both sides were liable to exaggerate the size of the opposing force and casualties inflicted. Not only that but a general shortage of weapons and trained men meant that many 'soldiers' were little more than agricultural labourers armed with clubs, axes, or even less. I would estimate that fewer than a thousand men combined were armed with firearms and most of the fighting was a street brawl. Casualties did not top double figures and may be less than a dozen other side. This would account for the lack of finds. The enterprising model shop should be congratulated on its idealised account of the battle though.

It sounds like local myth, retellings and historic propaganda on both sides has added an extra 0 over time to the number of soldiers in each battle group, considering I think the Plymouth garrison during its siege a few months later numbered about 2500 in total.

24:50 chiming in as both a blower and cutter of glass i would be astounded if carenza were wrong. looks vaguely like georgian era cut crystal. i recommend having someone shave off about a gram and subjecting it to mass spectrographic analysis. the specific fluxes and glass forming agents used in the formulation of the glass is as unique as a fingerprint, and can be used for dating and location of manufacturing quite as handily as mortars in castle walls.

also if anyone wants to know, you blow a bubble, cut it off the blowpipe and put it on a solid iron to work the lip, flare it slightly, and then press it down over an octagonal piece of wood or in more modern times, a skeletal structure of metal, and it will shrink slightly to shape as it cools. even today fin molded cups of many different shapes are popular among goblet collectors. goblet making is basically the neurosurgery of glassmaking skills. many many glassblowers, myself included, study how to make them as a means of skill building. what a cracking find.

I'm going to throw my wide-brimmed hat into the ring here and state the claim made for a major battle in Modbury is an exaggeration. Props to the model soldier emporium for making the most out of it but all the evidence I can uncover points to something small, maybe involving 2-3,000 poorly armed men engaged in a street brawl is what actually happened. Should finds show up I will happily admit to my error but given that the South-Western Royalists and Parliamentarians between them struggled to put 12,000 men into the field at the major battles of 1643 (Braddock Down, Stratton, Lansdown, Roundway Down) I cannot envisage Modbury being equally large yet forgotten. Which is not to deny Modbury being a fascinating place to investigate but the ECW cannot be the prime historical reason. Thanks for encouraging me to do some research though. Always look forward to learning new things.
