Singapore Airlines played an important role in bringing the A380 to life and saw it as a new era. However, its relationship with the aircraft hasn't been smooth. This is the story of the Airbus A380 at Singapore Airlines.

Can you honestly say your positive take on an airline who once operated 24 A380's, reduced by half, is a good thing !! It's never a good thing scrapping an aircraft with years of life left in it, just to keep the few remaining ones flying.

Does it hurt much see that all airlines who have invested on the 747-800 are struggling and/or got rid of it...where as the a380, a plane labelled by many (particularly Boeing fans) "going down", is not only not going down as there has been an interest in re instating units parked or long term storage, buying leased units and or trying to buy 2nd hand units? We shall remember that 2019/2020 Airbus was categoric - 'no more a380'...and fast forward to 2024, seing the inability of airports to cope with passanger demand in many high volume & traffic routes, the conversation moved to "not rulling out the possibility of resuming a380 production" (likely a neo version of the plane, given that it could benefit from newer components that could be retrofitted into older models).... Also...Singapore has 12 active units in its fleet...

@@jpazinho Why the bitterness? All 4 engine airliners are fast becoming endangered of being completely extinct, only a matter of time.... And all 12 A380's are not currently active, there are still a few in storage . Plane spotter's shows 9 currently active...
@jpazinho
@jpazinho Ай бұрын
@@777x-c6m not sure where I had read 12... A big caveat on the death of the 4 engine planes - they were dying due to operational complexity, fuel costs and a perception passangers demand was floating towards point to point travel (as well as growth forecasts)... The reality is that we now know passanger demand grew much faster and to a higher volume than pre covid forecast...and also there was a lot of miscalculations on passagers type of travel preference - particularly as follows: a) forecast that extented range planes and new routes would reduce travel to or between hubs was wrong...what you see in general is demand maintained or increased (alongside far more end destination direct travel); b) passangers were believed to prefer direct travel over travelling in two legs...we now know carrier choice, cost, and traveller type are far more important...i.e. the decreasing business travellers favour direct travel, where as tourists and 1st class tend to be happy to compromise in two-leg journeys (with short stopovers) if it means more premium experience and/or travelling via certain routes or in certain planes, like the a380; c) everyone under estimated travel growth...which is a problem for airport expansion...and in some cases you can use nearby airports (e.g. London) to divert some of the traffic...but in many cases (e.g. Berlin, Madrid, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, New York, Singapore) airport expansion is difficult...so super jumbos become the preferred Choice... The a380 will certainly either see a neo version or a "fuel efficiency pack" upgrade...that I am certain.. the issue is, its a monopoly market...whoever gets there first, will dominate the market...

Fun fact: Airbus hasn't completely ruled out resuming production of the A380. Personally, I think they're crazy. I suspect that they will look for ways to make it more fuel efficient in order to compete with the 777X. I think their resources will be better expended on making the A350-1000 more competitive.

You are wrong about the retiring A380 units. Just check their cycle count, and you will notice how fast the fuselage will have to be scrapped. And as you said, there still are old 57,67 and 77 flying around, without any major issues. Those fuselages have cycle counts that are a lot higher than those of the A380 engineering. Even the airlines that only push ultra long flights, like EK and SQ, they all are retiring those planes, as the fuselages are out of cycles. And no, those can not be sold to "some funny country", as they also know not to mess with out-of-cycle-fuselages that are end of their service life.

Airbus has to make the a380 aircraft maintenance friendly instead of 6 month to 8 month heavy maintenance check like 747 Boeing hmv only 2month or 3month maintenance . No doubt a380 is a good aircraft for passsenger with less cabin noise like a340 . They have to come out a new solution with component of a380.

The golden rule of airliner development since the DC-1 is use the minimum number of engines needed. With ETOPS now out to 370 minutes that is two engines on even the longest haul. The more engines there are, the more potential defects that can cause a flight to be cancelled or delayed. More engines, more engine overhaul costs. The A380 was a vanity project to have the biggest airliner. Not only was the A380 a sales failure, it failed to achieve the same glory as the 747 reached at its peak. It was the Queen of the Skies for 40 years. Stylistically, the A380 was simply too much bus, not enough airliner.

The A380 was the right aircraft, but at the wrong time. While Airbus developed it in a era when the hub-and-spoke model was all the rage, it was launched in an era when the industry was transiting towards a point-to-point model, which defeated the purpose of an aircraft that was meant for the hub-and-spoke model
@davidcarter4247
@davidcarter4247 Ай бұрын
@@SGZStudios The end of hub and spoke was on the cards from the day the 767ER went into the service. That was the future which Airbus fought against in the late 1980s. The A340 was launched in the belief Airbus could sabotage Boeing's push for ever longer ETOPS approvals. By the time the 777 was launched the four engine airliner was a dinosaur and hub spoke was only for airlines that had no other option, such as Emirates. The A380 became a vanity project to produce the largest airliner . No more, no less. It is cost someone billions of euros. .
