A story that has been making the rounds on social media this week is about an apparent new discovery regarding the Shroud of Turin. Reports say there is new evidence the Shroud is 2,000 years old, which coincides with our Lord's life and crucifixion. These reports originally surfaced in 2022. What appears to be new are studies concluded earlier this summer. They were focused on blood stains and scourge marks found on the Shroud and allude to Christ's death by being nailed to a cross, a common method of execution by the Romans at this time in 33 AD. President of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith, Fr. Robert Spitzer, shares his reaction to the new scientific research and explains it in terms a non-expert can understand. Fr. Spitzer tells us where things stand now with scientific research and whether there is a consensus about the Shroud and its date.

Was there any doubt??? And anyway, just like the father said, we really don't need the shroud as proof that Jesus was with us. The Eucharist is the greatest miracle here on Earth to show us that He was always with us. Even if we don't feel anything emanating from the Blessed Host or seeing rays of light coming out of it, He is always there The Most Blessed Sacrament.

There was lots of doubt for me , bro. I watched Lila Rose's Good Friday podcast with Fr. Spitzer on The Shroud , and that was my Road to Damascus moment. That was when I went from agnostic to knowing, not just believing . If the Resurrection is real, then all things that stem from it are real!

We don't need the shroud to prove the existence of Jesus and the reality of the Gospel, but in this post-Enlightenment age of scepticism and scientism we do need it as proof beyond doubt of Jesus' Resurrection. God of course always knew we would arrive at this age where faith is severely challenged, so He ensured this precious relic would be preserved for us now, when we have the scientific means to verify it.

In 1389 the bishop of Troyes, Pierre d’Arcis, denounced the shroud as a forgery. The story goes that the bishop claimed an artist had confessed to its forgery so the bishop wrote to Pope Clement VII to denounce it. The pope’s response was to declare the shroud a man-made religious icon rather than a relic and permitted the church in Lirey to continue to display it. It is not proof of Jesus despite how much you want to believe it.

Maybe because the future on the shroud has long hair, whilst Jesus would not have had long hair, as was the Hebrew custom for men? Maybe because the prophecy contained in Isaiah about the messiah 's death talks about him being so badly beaten that he could not be recognised? Or that the prophecy speaks about his beard being pulled out, whilst the figure in the shroud has a full beard? Or because scripture talks about Jesus being buried in multiple burial cloths or bandages, not a single shroud, even if you consider the supposed burial face cloth. Stop worshipping relics!!

At time stamp 2:30 we see very clear evidence of teeth, and not simply verticle straitian lines as some have suggested. A very close-up inspection of a hi-def photo of the face will show teeth where there are no vertical straition lines in the fabric. This is consistent with evidence of metacarpal bones in the hands (extension of fingers into the palm of the hands). See time mark 5:24 . Notice the fingers appear to be curled slightly. Also, if you obtain a good quality photo of the face and stand about 2-3 feet in front of it, and then move a few feet to the left or right, you will notice that the nose appears to bend to either side. I believe this feature has something to do with the 3-D information that has been encoded on to the fibers. JMO.

He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.” His face cloth was separate, folded, and lying apart from the linen cloths for the body. 1:27. If the earliest scientifically determined possible date of the Shroud is 54 A.D, this means it is at least two decades after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Historians believe that the most likely lifespan of Jesus was from about 4-2 B.C. until approximately 30-34 A.D.. Should not the Shroud be dated closer to the death of Jesus since it covered Him at His last moments? I would love to hear from Fr. Spitzer or any other serious scholars on this question.

Here is my take on things based on various articles on the subject: The date of the shroud is estimated to be 2,000 years old approximately. The dates of 54 and 75 are of a similar cloth found at Masada that is known to date 54-75 AD. So the study isn't saying the shroud is 54-75, but a similar cloth, which was needed as a control group for the study. I think that he either misspoke or doesn't completely understand that the 2,000 year old shroud date is an estimate and the 54-75 AD Masada cloth is an accurate age proven by history--when the Romans invaded the Masada. I may not have it exactly right and I left out some details, but I hope this explains it without over explaining it.

God bless the Pope! I think how he sees the world and how he sees the church is dates. He is very much a product of the 1960s and I think his ideas are not leading the church in the right direction. Just like we can see how the 1960s have effected our society and culture negatively we can see it has effected the Church negatively and we need to move on past those ideas. Unfortunately it really seems like the Holy Father is completely consumed with those ideas and in a lot of ways wants to throw out what in my opinion are the best parts of the Church and foster some very questionable things. This is all just some random Catholics opinions. Take it with a grain of salt.

Ever since I first heard of the Shroud I've believed it to be the real thing. A minor correction, Jesus was born no later than 4BC. He was definitely born during the reign of Herod the Great and we have positive evidence that Herod died in 4BC. I saw a video that puts His birth about 3 months before Herod's death. Of course, it's not proof positive, but it all hangs together very well. It puts Jesus's Presentation at the Temple right about the time of the Passover in 4BC.

It cannot be the burial cloth of Christ as the face on the cloth is prominent. It would not have appeared if you believe the testimony of the first pope and John the Apostle. Both of them recount in John 20:4-7 their observations not realizing that they would later discount the burial cloth image. The face cloth used to cover the brutalized face of Jesus is folded separately by itself. The face cloth would have prevented a uniform image if an image of the face at all. See also John 11:44 recounting the wrappings of Lazarus. He had a face cloth which had to be removed separately. This is never referred to in any of the scientific testing as a factor in commending the investigation. Also, the Greek word for wrappings is not used for a one piece of linen or shroud. The problem is that the Catholic Church granted indulgences to visit and worship the cloth. A recent pope has acknowledged the carbon dating results. The Catholic Church has never actually commended the shroud as what it purports to be. Silence is a denial. Take a moment and recall the recent fraud perpetrated on the LDS Church by an expert forger. He used blank pages from ancient manuscripts and forged writings that the LDS bought. So, the underlying fabric like the underlying parchments in the LDS fraud are not proof at all. What is more no specimens of burial spices have been found on the cloth despite finding of pollen. See, John 19:40. Why is there no memorialization by the gospel writers of such an image on the cloth? Because it did not exist. This shroud tradition was developed following the tradition of "Veronica's veil" memorialized in the stations of the cross in Catholic weekly ritual. Veronica's veil is not extant! Let's get over this old fraud used to garner indulgence payments to fund the Catholic Church. "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." Dale Carnegie.

Also, see the description of the Jewish burial clothing Lazarus wore and the napkin bound around his head when raised from the dead (John 11:44 KJV). Why not any information listed in the Gospels about the shroud??? Surely they would have found it and kept it and talked about it. They did not. A very talented forger. In 1355, when it suddenly popped up in Lirey near Paris, In 1390, the Bishop of Troyes, Pierre d'Arcis, who had jurisdiction over the church in Lirey, wrote a lengthy memorandum to Antipope Clement VII , declaring that the shroud was a forgery and that a previous Bishop of Troyes, Henri de Poitiers, had identified the artist who had made it. Nevertheless, Clement VII allowed pilgims to have access to the schroud on the condition that a warning be posted next to the shroud inticating that it was not the true shroud but A COPY OF THE REAL ONE. Have a look at the mess around the shroud at this time. Now at a moment when christianity is declining, when the catholic church is in disarray (pedofilia, internal fights...) and the west waging a new crusade to expel muslims from Europe, the shroud authenticity comes at the right time. I personnaly doubt that scanners where invented during the first century of our era. THis is not the end of the story. To be continued.....

@@Marv0712 Please Read carefully. what I wrote. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. These subtilised interpretations are highly manifold according to their nature and have almost nothing to do with the original text. For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people. As far as my experience goes, they are also no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything 'chosen' about them. (and more)". Islam? Christianity? Judaism? What did they (mostly monotheism ) teach for centuries? The god of the bible? Let's have a look. 6000 years ago God made the earth. A flat earth. He made the sun, a bright golden disk that roses in the morning, a silver disk that rose at night, as well as a few shining spots in the sky. He made a few rivers and mountains, a few animals, a man and a woman (see Sistine Chapel's ceiling) . After that, a bit tired, he took a day off. The Earth was the center of the world. The sky. Say up to the clouds for when men built a tower, a tiny tower, it disturbed him. In fact: a theater stage. When? According to bishoip James usher, in 1650, the world was created in October, 23rd, 40O4 BC..... THe man at least made kind of effort. I remember a TV program, in the 70s. A young American girl 14 was upset because she had been told at church during all her life that god created the world 4000, 6000 years ago, but now she was studying geology, and the world became suddenly billions of years older? She looked very very upset. NOw this is what the church imposed upon people for centuries, In case of discrepency -> death. From XVI, XVII century? Ideas take a new turn. Amongst men that believed what they did not see, rose men that believed what they saw. I'll made it short. Galileo, Newton, Cavendish.... Satellites of Jupiter are observed, laws of motion, ... THe earth is no more flat, it is a sphere. The earth is no more the center of the world, But revolves round the sun, stars become planets... The church? No move. Keeps telling the same bible. Believes what it does not see still. Later on? Howen, Huxley, Owen, Cuviers, Mantell. and more. Fossiles won the game. Here comes astronomy, geology particularly paleontology, chemistry, physics, etc. Big vertebrae appear in Europe and the States. The world is far older than expected. Many scientists are upset. But the men that believe what they see cant help it: THe age of the world, the size of the world increases every year. The church? No move. Keeps telling the same bible. Believes what it does not see still. From XVIII, XIX century and on? Come LLegan Darwin, Planck, Wallace, Einstein, Schrodinger, Von Neumann, Feynman, Le Maître)… Hubble, Humason…. Lambda-CDM (Refered to as Big Bang) model comes up. From an already existing "small bubble" 1,616 × 10-35 in diameter that decided to expend 13 800 000 000 years ago, something pops up. A new, another universe? The world is now more than 10 billions years old and billions of ligth years wide. THis is what science knows today. Data does 'nt tell more than what they tell. The church? No move. Keeps telling the same bible. Believes what it does not see still. But: Suddenly the old "has been" god of the bible mutates. Superman, Lady Bug, Bat Man, and the likes all at once. And suggests that the creation of the god of the bible is an allegory. Where do all these people stand? Easy, today, monotheism wisely gets rid of its old god of the bible, to sell a brand new one. But to get rid of the genesis or to state that it is an allegory is equal to get rid of the laws of Newton in classical mechanics: the whole theory crambles. Old habits and procedures go on: since the world is so sophisticated and "nobody knows where we come from still"l: back to square one -> god. Now here is a brand new god, culminating on a no start no end world I described before. When Einstein said "God does not play dices". He did not mean the god of the bible. He meant kind of "watchmaker". He was very careful. When he was asked "Do you believe in god?" . He answered "Tell me which god? And I'll tell you". Clearly Einstein rejected the god of the bible. 100%. So what? False premises: The bible. When Einstein said "God does not play dices". He did not mean the god of the bible. He meant kind of "watchmaker". He was very careful. When he was asked "Do you believe in god?" . He answered "Tell me which god? And I'll tell you". Clearly Einstein rejected the god of the bible. 100%. There is no such thing as a god of the bible-> no bible -> no virgin mary -> no son of god -> no resurrection, No judaism, no islam. An allegory. When does it start to be true? If ever. Maybe a few historical facts, locations, as it happens in all legends. If you get rid of genesis, or say it's an allegory, it is like gettng rid of Newtons laws in classical mechanics: the whole thing crumbles. It is noticeable that nowadays, the catholic church teaches god, jc and dinosaurs altogether to children from 3, 4 years old. Surprise. I dont buy buy any of the gods of believers: neither the old fashion one, nor the new one. No need for god. Forget the product of religions: sin, paradise, hell, ..... Forget fear. Cause: fear, effect: religion. NO. I stick to the fact that there is no explaination to "where do we come from" yet. I regret that many people behave like primitive beings still: fear of lightnings. No explaination -> god. Today: fear of complexity. No explaination -> god. The wheel rolls and rolls again.... Believers need non believers to intend to reassure themselves. To no avail. Bear in mind that non believers never waged war against themselves contrarily to what believers did and do: catholics, protestants, muslims, shiites, sunnites and the likes. Non believers are not a source of wars or genocides. I did not add a chapter regarding the catholic church crimes, and others religions crimes .....

Talking like this goes against the words of Jesus of Nazareth. That's good enough for me. The shroud has always been around and has always been found out to be from the 1,400s. That goes back to catholic churches showing the body parts of saints, showing they owned them the same way they now try to own Jesus of Nazareth. This isn't going to change my opinion as all those American pedophile priest lawsuits and convictions are occurring.

Well of course there have been fakes. My goodness but what on this planet has not been faked or counterfeited in some way? Well over 100 different scientist, doctors, anthropologists, and other highly trained researchers and their *tens of thousands* of hours of study have _proven_ that the Shroud of Turin was not made by some medieval mad genius in his hut somewhere. These days, only a moron of morons will call the Shroud of Turin a fake. No doubt about that.

@@TheLifeProTips Jesus of Nazareth also wasn't perfect. Being perfect was big for Catholics, the pope being half-way from human to being like Jesus. Jesus lost his temper with followers, telling them off so they would back off on the road. Jesus lost his godly cool when he called out to His father on the cross, asking why he was forsaken? Saying Peter had the keys to heaven was good for the Holy Roman Empire, saying Peter came to Rome and showing bones they said were his. Peter never came to Rome.

@@jsmovies5071 The Shroud image is so incredible that the burden of proof rests on those who think it is a forgery. STURP team spent over two years preparing a series of tests that would gather a vast amount of Shroud data in a relatively short period of time. STURP's primary goal was to determine the scientific properties of the image on the Shroud of Turin, and what might have caused it: After years of exhaustive study and evaluation of the data, STURP issued its Final Report in 1981: *We can conclude for now that the Shroud image is that of a real human form of a scourged, crucified man. It is not the product of an artist* "The answer to the question of how the image was produced or what produced the image remains, now, as it has in the past, a mystery." _No one has ever proven these 33 scientists and engineers wrong._ All were part of leading tech firms. Los Alamos National Scientific Laboratories* Lockheed Corporation* U.S. Air Force Weapons Laboratories* Brooks Institute of Photography* University of Colorado* Oceanographic Services Inc.* Nuclear Technology Corporation* U.S. Air Force Academy* Jet Propulsion Laboratory* Sandia National Laboratory*, etc. The STRUP team included three Jewish members, one Mormon, one Evangelical, several Catholics, several Protestants and some avowed atheists and agnostics. Had religion ever been a criterion for membership, most of the STURP team members would never have agreed to participate. The notion that it is a forgery (a painting, other work of art) has been disproved so thoroughly and absolutely that it is permanently buried; they are based in part on the denial of empirical data. The scholarly consensus a mere 60 years ago deemed the Shroud a medieval fraud; the present evidence allows a firm archaeological judgement for authenticity.

According to the book of Matthew, Christ the Count of Monte Cristo the greatest Egyptian pharaoh of all time the Son of Man King Mono Basileus General Simon Iscariot Barabbas Arshakuni Bar Giora Izates II the master Sicarius Sicarii Assassin Zealot leader King of The Jews , just before his arrest in Rome in garden after his escape, addressed his very first born son known as the Rock in gospels " the Simon Judas iscariot Peter Rehem namely Eleazar " as Hetaire, which is incorrectly translated " Friend." The thought that the " Unerring One " should address a person deemed his mortal enemy as " friend," an epithet they believed to be false, has been a source of great annoyance to expositors. Really, hetaire is a much more intimate term than *' Friend," for it means " comrade," a military expression, of course. The Mark 14:45, relates the meeting thus: "And when he came, immediately he went up to him and said, ' Rabbi ! rabbi ! ' and he kissed him much," It is not unreasonable to suppose that the initial letter in " Rabbi " has been an early addition to the original text, which, accordingly, would previously have read, " And when he came, he immediately went up to him and said, ' Abbi ! abbi ! ' ('My father! My father!') and kissed him very affectionately. It is not reasonable to assume that such a positive character as the Son of Man undoubtedly was, would knowingly permit a traitor to approach him within arms' length and " to kiss him very tenderly " as a sign to an enemy. It is more than likely that he returned the sincere embrace with equal warmth, and that as they parted from each other's arms, he perceived the officers of General Titus who had shadowed his son, and at that moment, discovering that all was over, he said, with infinite sadness, as may be gleaned from the Luke 22:48, "Darling Son [Jehidi], with your kiss you have betrayed the Son of Man." In Rome at that time was also Berenike (pronounced " veraneeka," that is, "Veronica"), the sister of Herod Agrippa II and favorite of general Titus and mistress , her country's destroyer, whom only political considerations prevented from becoming the Empress of Rome. It is not unlikely there is some truth in the story of the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus, and that she, too, moved by pity and patriotic piety, may have dipped her kerchief in the jewish General martyr's blood, or, indeed, mercifully spread the cloth as a screen over the mangled face features of the fallen Son of Man Christ!

Well, now you have to answer who's shroud it is, how their image got burned onto it, how it got all of the dirt and pollen from Jerusalem, why this person was crucified, etc, etc, etc. Your simple dismissal raises more questions than it answers, while all of the evidence of the shroud and the person on it screams “I was wrapped around Jesus.”

Does GOD break His own rules? Is God double-minded? God said make no image MALE or female, so people worship an object that has no power. (Deut 4:16). Also, Isaiah 53:2 "He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him." The beautiful, white, long-haired guy was reportedly Micheangelos gay lover.
