I always say that there're no bad or good musical genres, there're only bad and good musicians/composers exist. But in some cases some musical genre is hardly comprehensible for you. In this case you need to find a musician/band/composer who could be a gate to this genre for you. It has to be the music likable for you personally for some reasons. Most likely it would be reasons not related with this genre. For example you like the keyboard in some band and although you don't use to it's genre you listen to it because of the keyboard. If you like it somehow you'll use to it's genre gradually (of course it has to be high quality example of the genre, not a bad one). And then you'll discover that other music of this genre become more comprehensible and you are able to listen to it now. More you use to it - more other relatable music you could comprehend. I'm a 40+ y.o. music lover with a degree in classical piano. I listen to different kinds of music. I'm a metalhead for 30+ years. But I always preferred old classical metal, especially Black Sabbath and Ozzy, as well as Dio, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Motorhead etc. I didn't listen to modern metal for a long time. And I never was into the music with an exreme vocals, with a few songs as an exception. In my case it was until I faced the band Jinjer. They gravitated me by a few features: 1. Musical diversity and technicality. 2. Live quality. 3. Charisma and stage presence. 4. Meaningful lyrics. Because of that features I was interested in this band and I could handle the extreme vocals because it was alongside the things I adore. Step by step (it was a quick steps actually) I used to the growl and started to understand why it's a good artistical way and choice to express something with exreme vocals if you can do it properly. Later I discovered that I can listen to other bands with the harsh vocals and can like some of them pretty much. By the way when you use to the harsh vocal you can understand most lyrics in it. Especially if the singer has a good enunciation. Tatiana from Jinjer has an exceptional enunciation, one of the best in business.

The "Growl" It's just another form of expression, To love or enjoy or ignore or avoid according to your own likes or dislikes. It only matters to you. I music music I can listen to Jimjer's pisces followed by Jimmy Webb & Richard Harris' MacArthur Park' followed by Dvorak's new world symphony then Patsy Cline's crazy then, Between the Buried and Me's Selkies The Endless Obsession. I love all those songs. The point being.. It is all good or not? and that decision is up to the individual. And people who treat or think music genres' are some kind of "Team Sport"? (Rap is Better than country, Rock is better than Rap Classical is better than rock ..Is all nonsense) there is no "Better" Those why think there is/are? Don't really like music at all. Just Say'n. Well? That's my opinion. PS. Sorry for the long diatribe.

I agree with you. Although, I always did only like certain types of music. With the odd exceptions, but I'm finding my tastes are expanding. Which is really cool. But music is definitely a personal choice. (btw... I love that you mentioned Patsy Cline.)

But those who Demean & debase to degrade; other genres that aren't their own flavor is pure ignorance. LOL yeah I am of the opinion if you don't appreciate "Patsy Cline? Uh maybe? Up your dosage LOL Gotta Love Patsy.. We go walkin' after midnight.. often.
