Can someone explain why one would use a virtual hdd on my OS drive, over partitioning the primary drive and assigning it a different drive letter? aside from dynamic sizing. just as the whole vhd can be transferred, i'd think files and folders off a partition could also be as easily backed up or transferred. as for file isolation and protection, wouldn't any malicious modification to the vhd take out the entire drive, especially if BitLocker locked?

Features I'd like to see: First, the ability to turn off the "Recommended" section of the Start Menu and regain that space for pinned apps. At the very least, this should be a Group Policy setting for Enterprise and Education deployments. Second, the ability to revert to the classic right-click context menus as they are in Windows 10. As with the first feature request I mentioned, this should be possible via Group Policy for Enterprise and Education deployments at the very least. Lastly, I still prefer 7-Zip for all my archival needs. It's very small, lightweight, and free. It allows you to double-click-to-open files from just about every compressed file type in existence.

I am SO looking forward to taskbar labels being able to be un hid again. That is the most infuriating thing about 11 to me. I have been using the task bar labels for 30 years and couldn't deal with it so much that I paid for Start All Back just for that purpose! I make money off my computers and need them to actually WORK. My work programs really want to be updated all the time, so sticking with 10 messed them up. Only real reason I went to 11. They are much less buggy on 11.... Buggy as hell, but less so. Your videos have been a great help over the last couple years. Thank you.

.vhd support was in Windows 7, it was just hidden behind the Disk Management applet in Administrative Tools. Windows 8 expanded on this and allowed you to natively mount .iso's and .vhd's directly from File Explorer and you could also eject these virtual drives as well. 23H2 did nothing more than add already existing functionality to the settings panel.

Windows has had VHD support as early as Win7. Adding the options in Settings is new as well as mounting via mouse. Also of note is its not just .rar (pronounced rawr lol) but about a dozen other compression formats being natively supported. I'm sure explorer integration will be worked out by release but then again sometimes MSFT takes 2 years to do the simplest things. Great vid btw. I like being able to see what's coming w/o having to open VMWare, update, then scouring the OS.

I'm a IT Security Professional and one of the biggest complaints i get from my clients is that FDE(Bitlocker) only protects the drive when the computer is shutdown. With this new feature, you can encrypt a virtual drive within the OS and you can lock it so if the computer is left on, no one can access it. This feature is truly amazing and needed badly. I'm glad to see that we will be getting it soon.

Data must be un encrypted for the computer to be able to use the data. When you unlock the laptop through the Bitlocker screen when you first turn on your computer, from that point on, the data is NOT protected. The windows 11 AI selected a KZbin in answer to your question that showed how to set the refresh rate on a monitor. It looks like the KZbin was made by a private party with the channel name Northern Viking Everyday. This suggests that if you wanted to get wider exposure to your channel through Windows 11 23H2, you could anticipate the videos that AI will search for and create a series of specifically targeted explanatory videos that it would latch onto and suggest to all Windows 11 users.

Thanks for the informative video. Some comments: Virtual drive support has been in Windows since Windows 10, it was just buried in Disk Management. But it looks like in 23H2 they have made it a little easier to use -- now there's a kind of wizard approach where you answer all the questions and it creates the VHD file, attaches it to your PC, formats the virtual drive, creates a volume, and assigns a drive letter. Under the previous (Win 10) interface, you had to do each of these steps manually. But the feature has definitely been there for a while, including the Bitlocker support. EDIT: I see now that the difference is that it's now in the Home edition whereas it used to only be in Pro and Enterprise. So never mind, I guess, though I do wonder what use the typical home user would have for virtual drives. But making them easier to use is a good thing, regardless. Any idea if Microsoft has in this version plugged the "holes" that allow Windows 11 to be installed without a Microsoft account? It seems like every time they release an update, they remove all ways people have found to do that, and then people have to figure out a new way around it. It's like the world's most ridiculous arms race. I'd love to know if they're continuing to push this stuff, despite the fact that everyone hates it. Finally, a question: have they yet restored the ability to turn off the "overflow area" feature for the Notification Area/System Tray/whatever we're calling it this week? You used to be able to tell Windows 10 to "Always Show All Icons in the Notification Area." This is extremely important for me as a person who supports several hundred users. I want to be able to say to them "click on the blue squiggly icon in the lower right" (making that up, but you get the idea) without having to explain that the blue squiggly icon may only appear if they first click the minuscule little arrow that some of my more visually challenged users can't even see. That setting disappeared in Windows 11 -- it still appears in group policy, but it does nothing. Have they listened to the world on this one yet, or are we going to have to wait another year?

I wouldn't hold out hope for MS implementing file opening from within rar, 7zip etc. because depending on the setting used you have to decompress the entire file to extract/open a single file contained within, which is the default setting. It's one of the consequences of a greater compression ratio compared to zip.

Some really cool features in this one, W11 is getting closer and closer to being tempting to daily drive. Given that you're an ultrawide monitor user though, I'm surprised by how little flak I've heard you give MS for the continued avoidance of arguably the most basic taskbar functionality of all; moving it to the side to free up precious vertical screen space. I get that they really want that MacOS vibe for whatever reason, but their own forums and feedback hub make it pretty clear that this feature isn't quite the edge-case they like to pretend it is.

I got a new laptop with Windows 11 pre-installed last week. It was definitely a shock at first. But I'm getting used to it. I'm learning to use the search to get to things I need. I love having tabs on the file explorer. People don't like change. I get that. I'm not a power user. And I love learning new interfaces. I went through a phase where I was trying Linux distros just to try the interfaces.

Virtual Hard Drive is a big gamechanger. I so appreciate Microsoft for designing explorer to finally let tabs be opened on one window, it's a helpful feature. I personally don't care much about backing up data on my computer though, but I do back up on my external harddisk drive. Another upgrade I really like is that now we can have dark theme mode applied to all apps and whatever. I use dark themes for everything.

You can move tabs in 22h, it's just a "bit"... finicky, you have to move the tab you want to move a bit further then half the distance of the tab you want to move it next to, wait till that tab 'jumps' to it's new position and then let go of the tab. Anyway, does the "restore open windows" work when you had tabs open?

And FINALLY Never combine... however, I don't like how it pushes the other not open apps over, I want them to stay on the left, and then 'open windows' collect to the right - like XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 etc all did! People often disagree with me when I say this, but I REALLY wish Microsoft would add some tools to the desktop to sort icons such as either.... 1. Use a Fences-like solution where users can put files and icons into labelled boxes or 2. Add pages to the desktop, similar to what we have for smart phones, where the user can have several pages for keeping files and icons that are on their desktop on specific pages. To add to that, they should be able to label their desktop pages, as well. Anyway, for most office employees, this would help keep their shit more organized on their desktop. I can't tell you how many times people have come to our Desktop Support team saying that they can't find a file on their desktop, and it turns out that they ended up dragging it another folder because their desktop because it's so cluttered with icons.

The virtual drive needs to have its disk letter C: D: or whatever expanded to allow for a second letter or a number such as D1, D2, D3. This would allow virtual disks to be assigned to apps or to multiple uses. If assigned to an App then backing up a virtual drive automatically becomes a single app backup and data management would be easier especially if restores were needed.

There's so much legacy code that treats drive letters as a single character that this would be utterly impossible to implement without breaking everything. However, it could in theory be exposed to the operating system as a UNC path.
