The internet can be such a powerful tool if used properly. I have learned so much from KZbin and the internet. I love researching things, any. I will look up random items and watch videos on how they work from micro waves and ozone generators to hadron colliders, or model railroading, you name it. I woke up one more in a cold sweat and said, "I need to get into bees" and typed in bee keeping and have been watching videos for over a year now on hives and such. I want to pull the trigger but am looking for someone local that I could maybe shadow and see what it's about 1 on 1. But it will happen and I'll get into bees.

I built a bee garden i'm just waiting for the last freeze day of April to plant the flowers. I made a shallow water hole with ladders in the center i'll take and post some photos when done. I got my cinder-blocks and yard poles ready. poles are about 1 1/2' above the ground (OK or no?). I have been making some deep brood boxes and med honey supers for a couple days now (followed your measurements in another video) probably be done before mid April. I just want to say thank you, I've been watching your videos for a while now and that's what helped me to get motivated and back into the beekeeper mind set. I have 3 yrs experience when I was a teen but now i''m in my 40's and its time to help our pollinator girls again.

Believe him! I started beekeeping last year. Bought a nuc locally from a guy who takes his hives to pollinate down south. I had super aggressive bees. There would be 100 stingers on my suit. They would swarm me, find their way under me veil and sting my face. I’ll be buying from Barnyard this season. I had to destroy mine for my children’s safety.

As always great video Dave! I am the newbee who is going to put 2 hives (8 frame deeps) on the flat roof of a commercial building. I am at the New Jersey Shore and I just ordered 2 Nucs from a fairly local Jersey Beekeeper. She anticipates Nucs being ready middle of April of course depending on the weather?? I have already build my boxes and am currently painting them. I have read about 6 beekeeping books and have watched most of your videos and most of the videos put out by Your buddies. I got 2 bee packages April 30 this year, June I bought 2 new queens and did 2 splits And made a nuc and let them make a queen yesterday I checked they are growing so fast The nuc has 2 full frames of new eggs And I took 28lb honey from them Now I’m just letting them prepare for winter they have lots of honey and pollen stored So far I have 4 hives and 1 nuc

Hi David noobie here I hope to have 2 nucs going soon. I joined my local beekeepers club and taking noobie class. Been watching videos over a year and started reading a book about it and so on. I built a bunch of my own hardware last spring - summer. I even made some fat bee man type feeders to start out with. I'm building Little Bit Honey Bees - Joe's Pollen Feeder soon - waiting on some free green 4" pipe :) = That's a long ways for the bees to be chasing you back then lol - And by the way I built way more stuff than I needed but I had fun building it.

I am hoping so Julie - I would love to build some more hardware. I have some more wood to make some mediums and some Vivaldi boards. I have like 30+ new frames I will be assembling soon I picked up from my local Amish supplier dirt cheat. I plan on using some plastic starter strips in some and the others I have some double dipped plastic foundation. I also have a little wax I acquired from some used equipment that I processed and plan to melt it to coat the foundation again... I can't wait !

I wish I had discovered you before I purchased all of my equipment. I won't mention the company, but I think it is a large operation that does not give the individual attention to a customer that it seems you do. I've learned serval things since watching your videos. I have a ten frame hive, and a package is on the way in May. I have read, watch videos, talked to locals. I feel that I am ready to install the package. The one question I cannot seem to get answered is, how thick is the sugar water spray to be that is used to spray the package? Thick like what you feed, half that, or even a quarter of that? And. Do you need to feed the newly installed package just sugar water? I have a top feeder for that purpose. Or, do you also have to feed them pollen? Thanks for your videos. Make sure you have bee bread or your bees may start eating the queens eggs for protein. I have my own pollen patty recipe . I don’t sell nucs to first year students. I have given nucs to a good friend but I help than the first year. 😂 but I won’t sell one? I want good students. Great videos! Thank you for showing this. New beekeepers, listen to Dave and get a bee suit. Even gentle bees can be temperamental at times. If you get stung several times because you weren't wearing a suit, it might turn you off to beekeeping. It's really a wonderful and fascinating hobby.

@@fordman142 Good deal! I highly recommend a veil at the very least. You can also go to Walmart and get a snake bite kit to suction out the venom, it's in the camping section. I do it all of the time. Remember to flick the stinger off, if you pinch it, it will squeeze more venom into you. Good luck my friend and enjoy your bees!

Hi Lois, Lol, the same thing happened to me my first year. I set out two hives and baited them in middle to late summer. No luck, I didn't know what I was doing. But I learned a lot during the 8-9 months that I was waiting to get packages. I even went to a state convention. I went to the beginners class and realized that I already knew a lot of the information because I had been learning on the internet.

We started out last year with one, intending on staying there. Fast forward to today, and we are at five this winter. So far they seem ok, I have added sugar mounds on the frames and so far only one hive has eaten a small amount of the sugar. So hopefully we will exit winter with five live hives! I have read and studied using your videos as well, and some from dirtrooster, also the fat man. I am ramping up and have found another keeper selling out so I acquired a lot more boxes and frames, plus I have made some equipment. Thanks for the info, I will be posting videos this spring hopefully. I was wondering is ground corn would work as well as pollen?

That "Hive Tool" is actually called a "Glazing Bar", it is used in window making and available at all hardware stores. The hive tools sold today were originally modified glazing bars..

Hi David I am a first year beekeeper. I would like to ask you, come spring, doing splits, lets say I have several 5 frame nucs. I want to increase my volume of bees and hives. Now, for instance, taking one five frame and splitting, will it be ok to make 4 splits off the five hives? I know that all frames will not be the same. One frame might have nurse bees on capped brood, one may have nurse bees on particle uncapped brood along with capped brood. One frame may have just honey. Along with the fore mentioned, adding a frame of foundation such as plastic cell, or wax foundation , or even a frame of starter strip with the X fishing line for the bees to draw out, and, as long as I have enough nurse bees for each frame split into a two frame mating nucs as you use, adding one of you mated queens to each. Now the question. As long as I am feeding pollen and sugar water, shouldn't each of these new two frame splits have a pretty good chance to make it as long as I do my part correctly? I haven't seen any over $150, I just went and picked them up today and I have never seen so many bees. He had already sold 25 nucs and he was on the verge of swarms in all 100 of his hives. At least looked like it to me, they were everywhere. I was out there in sandals t shirt and shorts. Did put on a veil just to be safe but I took it off after a couple minutes. Most docile bees I've ever seen. I am from Arkansas and out state insect is a honey bee for a reason, so I assume thats why they are cheaper. Nuc I got today is huge, but they are so docile ive only seen maybe a dozen since I set them up. He shook a lot of young workers in and he said thats why they weren't flying much, you see on KZbin of them swarming once you shake them but they just went straight in.

Don't know if you watch the 628 DirtRooster or not. if you don't you should. He has taught me a lot, as well as BarnYard Bees. and Jeff Horchoff. There is a tremendous amount of information on the internet. Your local library will have books read them, I am just starting out also but I have been absorbing everything I can for about a year and a half, and there is A LOT to learn. I am ready to put out a couple of hives this year, I am shooting for 5 this year.

Bee keeping for dummies is a good book for trouble shooting. And another good read that i hightly recomend is called The Queen Must Die by William Longgood. It focuses on the similarity of bees to humans. Pretty fascinating. Good luck.

Great video for learning what a nuc is. Just wondering why the person recording this is standing in the bee line to make this video. I started keeping bees by helping my dad with his full hive. We have carnolian bees (Italian bees i think) they are very docile. Just some advice all bee keepers should WEAR GLOVES AND A BEE SUIT OR A VEIL and use smoke. And get yourself some epinephrine even if you are not allergic. i know it sounds crazy but i know someone who has been keeping bees for a long time with no allergy. A bear got their hive and the next morning they got stung while cleaning up the mess. Long story short that was the day they became allergic and went to the hospital in anaphylactic. Happy and safe bee keeping☺

If you catch a swarm it might work. But for the most part the queen wont leave her hive for no good reason. It would leave too much room for her to get hurt or killed even if she is with other bees.

Advice, first ask your agent or insurance company first. And ask if just for personal use a couple hives, versus commercial selling honey then you have a liability if someone claims your honey made them sick.

New Beekeepers need both a package and an established nuc. The skills that a package bee install prepares the new Beekeeper for catching a swarm and is essential plus the thrill of an install. They also need to see how New comb buildup starts and how the package grows. Please do not discount the learning properties of having a package.

Personally i have sold nucs for 100.00 why because it cost me 12.00 to build the box and for the frames in it and less than an hour of time to put together and split a hive into it. Probably would have been cheaper on the box if i used plywood instead of solid pine. Oh yeah and i still made money on them. To me its not about the money its about giving people affordable bees, some people just can't afford a 200.00 package that may not stay or a 180.00 nuc. And really the bees did not cost anything because either way its split or let swarm so, i would not mess with mean bees if o had a hive so mean i couldn't get into it i would go out at dark and burn it.

The B family Brewer Hi, you can get a hive kit at most suppliers that gets you started with wooden ware. You will need a jacket with veil hive tool and smoker. I agree with David, Nucs are a good way to start. Joining a local bee club immediately is highly recommended as is having two hives as a minimum. You can price out all of this online with any supplier.

Plan on $800 to $1,000 as first year budget....that's enough to raise 1 or 2 hives to enter winter with.....if you want raise bees to sale or produce honey you'll need additional funds....could trim the budget a little if you cut & build your own wooden ware......experience from a 3 year beekkeeper.....bee sure to get a detailed education & find a good mentor

I am new, my daughter got me a hive for Christmas. If a person's bees die from Beatles would you consider that their fault? or if they say all my hives died because we got too much rain, would you consider that their fault? The reason I'm asking is the girl that is going to be my mentor all her bees died.
