Love living in Florida lol

The flag fish can be very aggressive they can take chunks out of your other fish’s fins. All Florida killies are easy spawners. You have both male and female flags. The female has the spot on the dorsal. Cheers, Chris
@WildFishTanks5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I put a spawning mop in as they’re pretty plump and have been munching on algae like crazy

Hey man, that topminnow with the black spots you said was crossed with a gambusia is called a “melanistic Golden topminnow” they are much more rare than the regular topminnows and look pretty cool, I wonder if you can selectively breed them to be all black...
@WildFishTanks5 жыл бұрын
That would be cool. My friend took home that golden topminnow but my other friend has a handful of the melanistic gambusbia he’s going to try to line breed to try to do just that
@joshblack42915 жыл бұрын
You can definitely selectively breed them to get mostly melanistic patterning. Not sure if you would ever get them to be all black. AdrianHD on aquabid has selectively bred the melanistic gambusias to have white backgrounds, so they look like a dalmation molly. I've seen them offered on aquabid.

Melanistic topminnows are the best. I own a few myself. I own all of these fish species because I live in Florida and I go fishing often.

You are so lucky to live in a place where there are so many beautiful fish in the wild and to be able to put them in your aquariums. I wish I could do that, but I live in Canada and all the fish we can have in the wild are not as beautiful as the ones people can have in Florida. We must therefore absolutely buy them in a pet store. Florida flag fishes are great for eating algae that no other fish can eat.

My flagfish from the LFS are very mellow and downright friendly. They eat algae including thread algae, plus regular fish food. They’re pretty easy to sex and I saw both a male and female in your tank. Just look them up online. “Adult males possess more-extended dorsal and anal fins and are significantly more colorful than females, more so when in spawning condition. Adult females have a more rounded belly than males, they also have a dark blotch in the posterior portion of the dorsal fin which is not present in males.” It’s the dark blotch in the posterior portion of the dorsal fin that I look for. I have a pair that I hope to breed, but first have been fighting some internal parasites. Maybe they were wild caught? Anyway I love them and will put a pair in every tank I set up.

The Flagfish is quite easy to breed. Dan's fishroom did a video on them. You might want to check that out. Beautiful fish btw

Thanks for the heads up, I checked it out. Threw a spawning mop in there and have raised rainbow fry similarly to how he raised these guys so fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞

The female flagfish also doesn't have the American flag patterning. The female is more dull and olive colored. Males have the red striling on their sides, hence their name. Spawning mops should work for all of these fish.

It is simply a melanistic strain of golden topminnow. Not a hybrid of Gambusia. There are quite a few of them around our area in South Florida.

Man do I love both the blue fins and flag fish. Awesome personalities. My flag fish spawned a few times when there was bad hair algae but once it cleared they stopped. Dont know if there's a correlation. Awesome upload brotha.

Nice! I just threw a spawning mop in there since they’ve been munching on the algae and will work through it all eventually

@EricMBoyd5 жыл бұрын
Great video. Glad to see you put the Flag Fish in their own tank. I need to do this. Everything I see says Flag Fish get to be 2 inches MAX and I can tell you my Flag Fish are 3 inches easy. They can be bullies too, but I think they may have laid eggs and are chasing away all my other fish. My Large Mollies are being chased away. That's how big these Flag Fish got on me. I am jealous as I really have been looking for some Golden Top Minows. I did some more collecting over the weekend and found some Bluefin and Finally got one Least Killi and a mess of shrimp and some crawfish. Still trying to find the Nets you and Corey were using.
@WildFishTanks5 жыл бұрын
Yea some of the males I have are beefy and definitely show some aggression. I put some spawning mops in that tank yesterday and collected about eight eggs this morning, not sure if they are flag fish or panda Cory but we will soon see hopefully.

Check even drainage ditches and look for vegetation/floating plants. Dip nets made for collecting work best but you can use a net from dollar store or even a pool net

Thank you for the identification help! I literally just went to their tank and confirmed atleast 2 male and 2 female. Very distinct and easy to tell. I think they are really loving this filamentous algae
@WaterWizard15 жыл бұрын
Nice that you have two pairs. Yes they do like the filamentous algae or hair algae. That is why I bought a few pair. They also love the spirulina flakes...

You are correct. The female flagfish has the black & white spot on the back end of the dorsal fin. The male does not have the spot and exhibits more color. The males can become very aggressive, even towards other species, so be careful. I've had to remove them in the past. Lately, I've only been keeping females. Even then, the biggest female may become aggressive towards other female flagfish. They will eat hair algae. In my experience, however, they will not eat very much algae if they are getting sufficient food from your feedings. You can give blanched cucumbers of there is not enough algae.

You definitely have a male and female pair, males get the red fins & females have the dot on the dorsal fin. Try and keep just a pair or male with couple of females because the males are super grumpy! I have too many emails in my 55 they're always picking at each other. I don't know if mine were wild-caught or tank raised I had to buy them but they're super friendly.
@WildFishTanks5 жыл бұрын
I’ve got 2 male and 3 females in a 20L I’m monitoring closely but they seem to be doing well for past few weeks now. I moved them to that tank with tons of algae
