The atomic-orange can of death. I used to use these all the time in the 80's and a lot of the 90's until news of the cardboard used inside got to me. Never had a problem with them but now that I know there are much better out there I tend to avoid them. I have a few odd unused oil filters around here for cars I no longer own. I'd love to send them to you (at my cost of course) but I don't know how to go about doing that. Anything for science! 😁

Regarding AIR FILTERS : For Trips: I run a K&N Air Filter -- becuase it's the ONLY air filter that WORKS WHEN IT'S WET -- Running at high speeds in the pouring rain, while driving through the forest in Maine, the OEM Paper Air Filter got water-logged and damned near shut me down. It took a LONG TIME to find the problem, and no way to FIX it - except to remove the air filter and run without it until we're out of the rain. K&N to the rescue ! Ah, but the K&N is a P.I.A. to maintain, and it really doesn't filter very well until it has been run for 25-35 thousand miles -- most people clean them MUCH TOO OFTEN, which robs their efficency. Anyways, the hot set-up for EFFICIENT Air Filters for the '92 - '10 Panther cars is : FRAM # TGA 5056 -- the new "Tough Guard" series air filters are a BIG improvement over their cheaper "Extra Guard" series. With today's extended-length service intervals, it pays to invest in top-quality lubricants and filters. www.mercuryforum.com/forum/grand-marquis-14/1995-grand-marquis-restoration-8937/

@@opera93 Yes, Opera, the K&N is a fine quality Air Filter -- Used 'em in several different vehicles, since the desert-racing days of the '70s. Never had a serious "issue", but, at my age, it's too much hassle to maintain a K & N Air Filter properly. My new practice is to change Oil & Air Filters YEARLY , with no regard for miles traveled. Thanksgiving Week-end is perfect for me. I'm not surprised that you "noticed a difference" between the OEM filter and the K & N in your Intrepid -- viewers of other forums have made similar comments. Measuring the differences between one Air Filter and another is an excercise in hair-splitting -- the U-Tuber's "tests" of air filters borders on the ridiculous -- but they're pretty funny !! When the poop hits the propellor, you'll always be safe with an OEM air filter. Happy New Year !!

I remember my Auto mechanics teacher saying the Fram filters were really good, and this was in 1992-3. Hastings used to be the worst filters since they just had wrapped cotton/poly filtering media, not pleated , the very first plastic and spring endcap bypass came into production and the Nylon plastic used to break down for a few years until the new plastic PA6 material was used. in 1999, Fram decided it was a better idea to change their superior design to what everyone else was doing for cost savings in production for more profits, that is when Fram went into decline but for a different reason, that is when people first learned of the foam end caps when most Frams had Metal end caps. The one you opened must have been a transition filter around 1998-1999. I wish Fram would go back to 90's style bypass but with silicone and the new filtering media. I bet they would be among the best again. Great Video, I had forgotten why Fram was so good back then.

I still run the orange can of death on my cars because they are cheap, and I change my oil every 3000 miles for stop and go driving and 5000 miles for highway driving. It does not matter what oil filter you use as long as you change your oil ON TIME. NO filter will prevent engine damage if you go way beyond the recommend oil change interval. Oil is cheap, engine replacement is not.

Turns out that those "crappy end caps" are really not so "crappy" after all -- as can be seen in newer oil filter samples that show a return to the fiber end caps on some of the newer models sampled. Unfortunately, we tend to get hung up on features that we really like -- and if anything changes, we wanna flip out and holler "They made it cheaper!" -- which may or may not be true. Which filter would YOU buy ?? A 25-Micron rated filter with those "cardboard" end caps -- or a 35-Micron rated filter with "metal" end caps ?? I'm all about Micron Ratings -- not bothered with types of End Caps. HAPPY NEW YEAR !!

I was hoping you'd be able to do this comparison on an older Fram. I saw a video doing this same comparison 10-12 years ago. Most of the difference was the new one had sloppier pleating/gluing. You're right about the date. The first letter is the plant or line code followed by the year, Julian calendar date then shift. I personally wouldn't use one, but those basic Fram filters aren't as bad as internet 'lore' makes them out to be. I did use a bunch in the '80's before I got better filters just because Fram saturated the market. Everywhere you went all they stocked was Fram. The ironic thing is it's not the end caps on the extra guard but the media and other aspects that are bigger drawbacks. Those fiber end caps only purpose is to seal the pleated media. They don't provide any structure. The reason Fram gives is that when bonding the cellulose media to a similarly porous material you get a stronger bond vs a smooth surface. Different media such as 'glass or synthetic have different properties. Like I said, I wouldn't use one because I prefer to use more 'premium' parts, but it's not going to 'kill' your engine. I'd be more concerned about what's going on with Wix.

I used to deliver to the Frame factory in Pawtucket RI, right where that filter was made, and they were #1 in the aftermarket filters in the world, as well as making filters for OEM and under discount brand names produced with cheaper specs. This was in the early eighties and the plant has long since been closed as production moved elsewhere ( overseas?). It's easy to see why they were the best. Sadly for my cars, I' be been using them until a few years ago, and now I seek out filters at the dealer, or use another brand.

Looking at you Wal-Fart! I think the old filter is better. I would guess filtration media in the 90's was probably 90-95% at 30-40 microns. Back in the 80's and 90's I swore by Fram. In my personal vehicle at 1500 miles you could still read the writing on the dipstick through the oil film but if you used an AC Delco filter the oil was opaque by 1000 mi!es. On the heavy equipment that I worked on it didn't matter the oil was black on start up from it being a diesel. By the early 2000's we had to dispose of filters properly and we crushed them to get the oil out for disposal. This led to my first cutting open of the filter and the fram was so poorly made compared to the other filters in my opinion that I swore off of Fram. Wix or the Napa equivalent which are the same filter are now my filter of choice.

Because of branding AlliedSignal on the container, most likely before 2000 when AlliedSignal bought Honeywell and adapted Honeywell as the corporate name. Sadly, Fram and several well-known auto parts companies have bought and sold by different corporate entities. IMHO, if seems each time they get bought and sold, there's an effort to cheapen the product.

It is interesting that at one point, Fram made filters with a base end bypass. I agree that it would be preferable for an oil filter going into bypass to not wash the debris previously filtered back into the engine. If I was designing an oil filter from the ground up and was not being beholden to the bean counters, it would have at least a synthetic blend media, a base end bypass, a silicone anti-drain back valve and (gasp!) a coil spring. From what I have seen, I think Wix made the last oil filters meeting those criteria but has moved to a dome end bypass and a stamped leaf retainer spring - probably to meet a financial, not engineering, target.
@faxmen09

Since filter says AlliedSignal (not Honeywell) on old Fram, date code likely indicates made Jan.1998. Box printed 1994. The thread end bypass 'similar' design to 'current majority' Motorcraft filters for FoMoCo vehicles. Also, no doubt more costly to produce then the dome bypass of the new. I don't buy that base end vs dome makes a "significant" difference. Both work. The old filter element does appear to be better made, but unlike new, it has no efficiency rating. 😥The design of old bypass is cool, the adbv attached. New has silicone so it wins that part. I don't care for 'sure grip' on new, makes using fitted cap wrench an issue. Interesting to see differences old vs new, but not a big fan this Fram fiber end cap construction. Thanks for vid. On the old Fram the outer area of the nitrile adbv serves that function (adbv). The inner/central part of nitrile adbv, serves as part of the bypass valve.
