Not sure if it was more the fact I updated the firmware on my 16-55 lens or the xt-3 firmware update, but the auto-focus tracking is about a million times better than it was before.

Don't agree about AF limitations regarding XT3. I think xt3 and xt4 are both capable for improved autofocus. It doesn't have to be on pair with 5th gen cameras, but it can be on pair with at least a7iii which was released in 2018, 2 years before, I think, xt4. I honestly doubt that a7iii had much better processor than xt3/xt4. We would be more than happy to get that level of AF C, but it will probably never happen, because of Fuji new approach. I don't blame them, they have to fight with fierce competition and have to sell more new cameras, but it is just not the same customer care like it had been before. However, I really appreciate your message about Kaizen at the end.

You're right about the kaizen updates tho, and here is a bit of information that i believe many people overlook. Updates to older models are very relevant in markets (like in my country morocco or the MENA region), where moqt people can't afford new gear, so a VAST MAJORITY of users buy second hand cameras. In fact when it come to fujifilm in morocco at least, it is a brand that's gaining a ton of momentum, and that's thanks to the older models, the x-t20, the x-t2 and especially the x-t1 are hot sellers, for around 500 usd paired with the 18-55, you can't have a better offer in terms of bang for your buck, i've noticed fujifilm gaining a lot of ground thanks to these old models that help consumers get into the system, these customers then continue the upgrading path with more lenses and eventually the x-t3 and x-t4. Generally, for under 10000dh (which is around 1000 usd) no brand is more appealing than fuji in the moroccan market, and it is gaining reputation in a market where once only canon was associated with professional cameras,hahahah

Yeah but look at it this way. I have an X-T5, and it received the improved autofocus algorithm, however it did not receive the auto subject detection. So I really wish they step their kaizen up a notch and give us this feature, as it is really annoying to have to select your subject whenever you want to shoot on a whim!

This is the best thing I've heard all day. I literally just pulled my XT4 out of storage last week to get it ready for this coming holiday weekend. Strange! After I update with firmware 2.0 on my X-T5, I cannot select “Auto” in the “Subject Detection Setting” menu. That option is not there. Update: After watching the video, I thought you can select “Auto” on an X-T5, but it appears to be only on the new X-S20.

Thanks Pal2Tech - yes Fuji, please remember Kaisen. I have an X-T2 and have no plans to upgrade it. Having made a significant investment a few years ago to switch systems from Canon I'm pretty much spent up. I realise that some of the firmware upgrades aren't possible with older electronic hardware but at least give us access to the new app!

At 2:45, the menu-image shows "subject detection setting AUTO". I don't have AUTO on my X-H2 with the new firmware. Just the list of various subjects. You also have face/eye set. The X-H2 won't do both together. Once I turn subject detection ON, I get a message "face detection will be off".

I’ve used the new firmware update only briefly on the XT5 and H2S and it is a noticeable improvement. The eyes seem to be a lot more in focus. I plan on testing more in the next couple of days. I don’t know if it’s just me, but the AF on the X100V after firmware update seems a lot better, too. Love the new app. I just wish their transition between camera tiles was a bit smoother but the app itself works reliably well.

I think I have found a serious bug / problem with the latest firmware on the X-T4. I have found that the camera locks up when trying to take a photo with any of the advanced filters. When I set the left hand dial to advanced and use for example the "Partial Colour Red" option, the camera locks up immediately after taking the shot. I have tested using different lenses, sd cards etc etc - same result. I tested latest firmware update on my X100v using the partial Colour filter setting and that is fine. This feature is one that I don't use often but it seems to affect all the optional filters under advanced on the dial. All other camera modes work flawlessly. I cannot find anything about this yet online so will reach out to Fuji next. I wanted to post this here as I watch your channel and thought its something you may like to test and report on so others don't have the same issue as I suspect that unless users make use of this feature, it won't be spotted very quickly.

Got the app as soon as the update dropped two days ago. However, the App is just a black void for me on Android 12. Lets hope they can fix that soon. I was oberjoyous when, a couple months ago, an ex-Fuji employee reported on Reddit about the new app and how it was coming along very nicely (though slowly). Might have been bearly a year now. Hi there - thank you for the detailed video! I think there may be some misinterpretation on the autofocus update, it's unfortunately a bit more mundane and something that has been reported to Fuji for many years, and is actually present going as far back as the X-T1. Take an X-T4 with the old FW and set it in Single AF. Now use your back button to lock focus - keep the button pressed while continuing to make subsequent exposures as one would do for example in a portrait session, where you grab focus on the eye once and then recompose for numerous subsequent frames. You will notice that after a number of exposures, the camera will simply ignore the back button and re-acquire focus upon shutter press. The new update resolves this very minor but very annoying bug. I don't know what your testing methods were for the speed of autofocus, however if you look in the menus you'll see that the back button can be set to use either Single AF or Continuous AF acquisition methods, so I find the idea that there is such a difference between a half-press of the shutter and the back button that it causes a difference in acquisition speed to be highly unlikely.

So, I updated my xt5, ready for my daughters birthday party. Used it with my viltrox 85mm (II) which is a great lense, but the AF can be challenging. The hit rate was much higher, cant wait to try the same combination at an event now, just to convince myself that it really has improved.

Thanks Chris! I DID just see you flash the flash on the X-S20 by me😉 I took the X-H2 to the zoo in Cologne today. WOW what an improvement in AF. Bird tracking was spot on, even when they were behind netting. I used the 70-300mm lens. BUT (I'm in a zoo remember) if there are no 'listed' subjects, like seals, sea lions and pandas, it focuses on what you point the camera to without a big fuss. For the 3rd time in my Fuji-life I filled a 126GB SD card. Lucky I brought a spare.

I've installed the new app (better but still seems to take forever to connect via wifi to download jpegs to phone), and updating the firmware on my X-T3. I just updated my X-T5, and although the firmware update page for this model states the enhanced autofocus algorithm, it doesn’t mention the auto subject detection. And unfortunately, I cannot locate it in the menu neither. So maybe the HR sensors slower readout speed doesn’t enable such processing? Or Fuji has feature locked “older” models… no idea.

Yep...on my X-H2s the upgrade cleared all my presets (and maybe other stuff, too, but it was the presets that I really noticed). Fortunately, I backed them up with the X-Acquire app, so not a problem (although at least on MacOS that app is a bit user-unfriendly, IMHO).

Did the firmware update for my X-T4 and yes it did save all my settings except time, it did however reset my camera file numbers back to zero for new images taken after the updates. As a "sequential" file name user this was frustrating.

I cant even find this app in AppStore. But I cant wait to see what is new. I have Xpro3 and Xt5. While I do not like that pro3 can storage up to 1000 files in one folder, t5 can do 10 thousands. On the other side, while transfering JPGs to smartphone, I do not why but it takes much much more time to start and also to select photo on newer t5 than on older pro3. I do not even understand deferences like if you press button for shortcuts to choose CameraSettings (c1-c7), on pro3 single-press always makes change from actuall setting to c1. On t5 it show actuall setting first. And in camera menu, t5 has nice menu option for Connection instead pro3, where you have to look for connection card in submenu of general set.

Hi Chris, great video as always. I updated my X-T5's firmware as soon as it came out, and the new app connectivity is awesome, but just wanted to let you know that I do not seem to have the X-S20's automatic subject detection feature, even though the firmware docs say that there are AI improvements. (No AUTO option, and no additional subject types beyond the originals.) My guess is those improvements are mostly under the hood, and we will (hopefully) get the auto subject detection feature in a later update.

Agreed, I noticed this too. According to their notes, the additional subjects like insects and drones are included but in existing categories, (e.g. drones will be tracked if set to airplane). But the AUTO feature is definitely absent. Not sure if they will add this at a later date, but it would be surprising if the X-S20 gets this exclusive feature and not their flagship cameras.

I don’t understand the direction Fuji is going here. They used to be all about the customer service. Now I feel they are slowly turning into every other manufacturer. I’m lost why they limited the firmware updates to only these cameras when there are so many in the arsenal. For example the X-h1 as a videographer I use this camera often for shoots and despite it being a 5 year old camera, it is incredibly powerful and reliable. Why doesn’t that get the update? There are plenty of shooters with the xh1 yet there’s no love from Fuji for those users. That saddens me.

The X-T2 sadly doesn't seem to be supported by the new app. It's a 4k capable camera not so different than the X-T4 but it already seems obsolete. It doesn't look good.

Thank you Chris for always taking time with giving us a faithful overview of Fujifilm cameras, all others just brush through the system making the Fujifilm system as if it's just a small player in the field but Fujifilm cameras are also one of the best and thank you to Fujifilm company to give so much on updates though we beg of them to truly help with XT2 models as well for in Africa we can't afford 30-40k in camera gear and so expensive lenses. As an XT2 user I love this camera and would sure love some minor fixes on the menus and focus system 😁🙏 . Been around for more than 100K subs, love your attention to detail Chris! That's why I want to let you in on some info that I think you will be receptive to while others would not. On KZbin kaizen is thrown around as a buzz word. However, its a core of Japanese culture. Its not something anyone will forget. Its one of the key elements to their everyday motivation. Many Japanese business practices are mirrored in the culture itself. Of course this doesnt extend to 100% of the population etc, but its been enough of a driving force that you saying it as a reminder kind of comes off as tone def. A lot of articles in English get things wrong about Japan because its a high context communication culture, a lot of things go unsaid.
