Its kind of amazing how in the space of a few hours we went from 'randomly dealt pregens' to 'Saburuh the forester, Bernard the guard, Sylvester the Ditch Digger and Sir Isaac Newton favored apprentice' heroes with invested players and more roleplay then most of these types of shows.

This is the closest to real 1st addition AD&D play I have ever seen on a podcast. The 20 minutes of off topic crap followed by ensuing silliness reminds me of nearly every game I’ve ever been involved in. The first episode was also reminiscent in that everybody met in a tavern, with none of that, over-the-top, Mercer roleplaying nonsense, and off to the dungeon followed by one of more character deaths in the first hour. Nice.

What I loved: It felt like a real D&D session. Everyone having fun and joking around. What I did love: It felt too much like a real D&D session. Most of the session was spent joking about things that had nothing to do with the dungeon. Will I continue to watch? Of course I will!

If, for some strange reason, David Winters needs a demo reel to be considered for more DMing roles on the Network...or anywhere...this episode is all he needs. This is arguably the funniest thing the GCN has published that's not just the founders all doing their thing together.
@MrColdraven
@MrColdraven 2 жыл бұрын
This was interesting because it was something you rarely get to see on KZbin : the effect of a toxic player on a party. A really great crew minus one. Joking around is great but constant derailing is insulting to the DM especially in view of an audience. The other players really did their best to roll in spite of it. David was MVP for tolerating and wrangling it all.

Didn’t the party eat about an hour and a half ago at the tavern? Two party members fighting over who get to eat the halfling would result in most sane characters telling them to stop, and if the warnings weren’t heeded, the two cannibals would be put down.

The fundamental game concept of "the funnel" is just flawed and not fun. It's a bullshit OSR idealization of a basic "DM-vs-the-players" concept which games long since evolved beyond -- to whatever extent it was ever a thing -- for very good reasons. (What do you want to bet the phrase "negotiate with your players," basically meaning "argue at your table," occurs in parts of the basic ruleset? I'd give it even money.) The lesson is that DCC is an example of that kind of bullshit and just basically not a good idea. Based on this, I wouldn't run it. That said, the GCN crew made some extremely funny hay out of it, you have to give it to them. I was entertained. Skid and the halfling cannibalism was especially hilarious.
@godfreemorals
@godfreemorals 3 жыл бұрын
@@cyranojohnson8771 you just described my problem with most of the OSR games., which is a shame because I love a rules-lite system and 'original' D&D Basic (Moldvay/Mentzer) was grand, but DM-Vs-PCs isn't fun for anyone.
@inarticulatevoid
@inarticulatevoid Жыл бұрын
@@cyranojohnson8771 I know this is a year old comment so skip reading this if you really don't care - You realise that there are 10 more levels after the funnel right? This is literally character creation. The "Game" hasn't even started yet. Literally the definition of judging the book by it's cover. Two people can play that game. D&D culture has perpetuated the idea of not killing the PCs to the point where matt mercer was called out for his player's choice to engage with a high level npc which ended up with a couple of them dead. Yet they brought back the dead characters. No consequences to their actions. Might as well play pretend at that point.
@bobbycrosby9765
@bobbycrosby9765 Жыл бұрын
@@cyranojohnson8771 as long as you don't do anything too stupid, it's actually pretty hard to die outside of the funnel in DCC. The funnel is actually a great solution to a real problem: power gaming and min-maxing. It gives you 4 characters to "choose" from in a fairly organic way. You get to actually play your characters origin story.

Dungeon Crawl Classics is not a good game and I think this is very apparent. GC team at least makes it an interesting show. Pro tip: stop nerfing the PCs. This happened in Marvel Superheros and it hurts the game. The game is already bad. It doesn't need to be made worse.
