Beatiful 2 piece perfectly matched hunk of mahogany ...tick. P90 gibbo tone ...tick. Perfect set up ...tick. Couple of slightly bitey fret ends ...not quite so tick but I love it so much a few quid at a luthier to make it perfect ...absolutely tick!

Funny thing is that the thin finish meant for cutting costs actually gives these guitars the potential to rival some custom shop instruments in terms of sheer tone! All you need to do is to swap the stock pickups for a nice set of lower output Alnico 2 P90s that allow the natural tone of the wood to come through, like the Lollar 50s or Seymour Duncan Antiquities. Plus, the satin finish makes their necks surprisingly fast.. for a vintage-style non-shreder guitar.

For me, the high-end Epi vs budget Gibson is a no-brainer: I want my under-a-grand Gibson with a full-blown, thin-nitro finish that will look ragged and beat to crap after 20 years of trashing. If you're concerned about playability, take it to a top-drawer luthier and have it PLEKed and given a top-to-bottom dressing. For me, these P-90 guitars just SCREAM value. They've got the brand, the look, the sound. Now all I need to do is cry myself to sleep over the decision between a DC in Blue Stain or an SC in Worn Brown. #1stWorldProblems

Got the white p90 special 6 months ago. It’s amazing. Had to tweak the truss rod and action on arrival and swap out the crap strings but it’s pure alive and very very resonant unplugged. Tested it against my epiphone 1956 pro and very similar overall. The Gibson is brighter and more cutting and alive. The epi is more mellow but the Gibson plays so dam good it actually amazes me still to this day. The epi is for sale now and also one other guitar so I can get a special with humbuckers 😃

I wanted to buy LP for a long time, looking mostly at Epis, but couldn't stand that ugly headstock shape. So eventually I just bought beautiful Gibson in Wine Red and never had any regrets. My first Schecter wasn't much worse feel-wise (it had wonderful setup), my first Fender was great for clean tones on neck pickup, I even got crazy skull and bones Samick from 80's which I love to bits, but... Well, while I love all my guitars for one reason or another, when I take my LP and strum it, I feel that it is worth every last $ I payed for it. Maybe it is just me, but on my Gibson I am just 20% better player than I am on any other guitar.

@ThorneyedWT4 жыл бұрын
@@robertpurdy4452 well, my Schecter was MIC Omen-6, basically bottom of the line, but it felt great to play. Pickups were trash, as expected from such low-end model, but I think that on cheap instruments it is much better to invest in good wooden parts, fret job and general playability and let buyer eventually install pickups he prefer. Gibson LP was totally different, PLEK setup from the factory is no joke and wider neck with asymmetrical carve fits my big hands perfectly. And I am totally aware that I overpayed for flame top, nitro finish, binding, MOP inlays and all that fancy stuff which I don't really need as a player. But I like fancy stuff, can't help it, lol. I got one for £599 reduced new recently its a beauty and i love the more toned down look of it, the pickups are definitely hotter/gnarly but in a good way, the tone control can allow for a very nice range of sounds. The smaller sizing makes it feel comfortable to play for an extended time.

I remember when I picked up a 2016 Studio Faded T LP for £599 brand new that very year. Now they're coveted for being the only lower end production model by Gibson to have a 59 neck profile since. @davidburke21324 жыл бұрын
Simon Singh Seriously? These guitars were never, in living memory, for sale at the point of introduction for £400-£500!! You may have found the odd one in a “fire sale” by specific stores at the end of the year as they clear stock for the new Gibson models that always used to be released in the new year, but I doubt even that! I suspect you’re confusing the pricing and also confusing these with the DC Junior Tributes which were fundamentally simpler guitars: single pickup, “swimming pool” pickup and wiring routing under a larger scratchplate (on which the pickups and wiring were mounted), etc. I picked one of those up in late 2018 on discount (if I recall the RRP then was £699 for those), but even then I paid £549 (£150 off a brand new £699 US made guitar is still a fairly decent discount).

@davidburke21324 жыл бұрын
jgenoese Ok, the price differential is pretty big, but to be fair if you look at the detail of the differences you start to understand a little better why that may be: - it’s not just a different colour Gibson logo! Lol. The one on these guitars is silk screened (basically painted on!) whereas on the “full fat” model it’s the proper Gibson inlay; - these guitars have the open-pore satin nitro finish whereas the proper Specials have a full gloss nitrocellulose finish. This is significantly more time consuming, and therefore more expensive, to do, especially at US labour rates; - neck binding... this is a manual task. Again, US labour costs make this a more expensive additional feature than you might think (some other US manufacturers either don’t offer binding options at all or they usually only do them in a very limited availability on their higher up models, e.g. PRS and Fender); - the “proper” model comes with a Gibson hard case rather than the gig bag; and - general higher quality of components across the board, as implied by things such as nickel hardware vs chrome and the wiring harness specs. I can still see your point about the size of the price differential (which is actually $600 on the Gibson MSRP in the US) . But personally I think Gibson have gone in too aggressively low with the price of the Tribute model rather than that the “full” model Special is too expensive. Why do I say this? Well, because at an MSRP of $999 the Tribute is the same price as the Special Tribute DC, which may appear to be the same level of guitar, but the DC version has the bigger scratchplate because it has a “swimming pool” routing underneath and the pickups and electronics are scratchplate mounted which makes manufacture quicker and therefore cheaper (which is the reason Leo Fender did essentially the same thing with his Strat from the beginning). There is a valid reason for a price differential between the DC and SC versions of the Special Tribute and I’d suggest for the SC Tribute to therefore be a little more expensive as a result.

David Burke I’m not sure if you are talking me into the special or the tv yellow one 😆 I think the white one looks fantastic
@davidburke21324 жыл бұрын
jgenoese Haha. I know what you mean. Between the TV yellow “proper” one and one of these white Tributes I’d have to go with the Tribute, but that’s mainly because I’m a bit weird and have never really liked TV yellow and think the white is stunning. But if it were the cherry “proper” model or a white Tribute I’d find it a much harder decision. I can’t help thinking that at these prices I could buy the Tribute, get a hard case, upgrade the wiring harness and possibly the pickups, and still have spent less than for the “proper” Special, and I quite like the satin finishes so that would be no hardship.

Don’t know why the double cuts were never more popular especially in the specials. I’d prefer the DC in a slab body with P90’s. Already have a Gibson Les Paul.

For $899 I got my Epiphone Matt Heafy Snøfall Les Paul Custom. It’s literally a Gibson LPC but with the meh Epiphone headstock and EMGs. It was even scanned and modeled by Epiphone after Matt’s own original Gibson Les Paul Custom. Even my dad, whose played Gibsons for the last 35 years said there was no way it’s an Epiphone. So why buy the cheapest Gibson out there for MORE when you can get the best Epiphone Les Paul available that plays like the high end Gibson stuff? And it’s the most beautiful guitar ever made imo😊

There's something about the Gibsons, guessing it's down to the building process, but they always just seem to have that little extra to them over the Epiphones.

Its nitrocellulose lacquer. I own gibsons and epiphones and the difference is all in the lacquer, and maybe in glue or something too idk.
@yargnad4 жыл бұрын
It's the pickups. Gibson is the king of humbuckers. Everything else is comparable in build quality, but Epi has exponentially better QA. Nitro laquer is overrated. Its better than poly but still toxic as hell. Dyed/stained is far better than auto paint finishes.

@twantheunisz92814 жыл бұрын
@@yargnad its not the pickups. Its the lacquer. Pickups are a simple device and epiphone uses the exact same designs. Anyone can make a good pickup, as you cant even tell the difference between a cheap and expensive pickup. Because there is no difference.

This seems really pricey especially since you had those 50's and 60's LP Studio Tributes with full-on tunomatic hardware, carved tops, and period-correct tuners for the same price only a few years ago.

thr3ddy You do know (primarily because of Brexit - since the vote and the uncertainty) that the exchange rate has significantly worsened in those few years for us Brits buying foreign made products (especially those from the US because of the Dollar to Sterling exchange rate). We can’t expect any manufacturer to absorb foreign exchange movements I’m afraid. 🤷🏼♂️ To put specifics to this the Dollar to Sterling exchange rate is 19.7% worse for us right now than it was the day before the Brexit referendum, and therefore even ignoring the additional effects of inflation a US guitar price from mid 2016 would be 20% more expensive now. Or looking at it another way, these £899 guitars at the old exchange rate (again ignoring the extra effects of inflation) would have been £749 guitars in early to mid 2016.

I don't like carved tops, don't like tuneomatic bridges and the vintage style tuners arent so great. PRS got rid of the tuneomatic bridge for a reason... It's absolute garbage.
@davidburke21324 жыл бұрын
yarg nad Oh, you mean the tuneomatic bridge that PRS still uses variants of on some of its guitars, such as the McCarty 594 models? 😜 Let’s be frank... PRS doesn’t use a tuneomatic style bridge on most of their guitars because most of their guitars are equipped with modern vibrato systems, and you just can’t do that well in conjunction with a tuneomatic style bridge. What bridge did Paul opt for when building his ultimate guitar tribute to one of his mentors, Ted McCarty, the McCarty 594... yep, his own version of a tuneomatic.
@yargnad4 жыл бұрын
@@davidburke2132 PRS only uses the tune-o-matic on McCarty for vintage enthusiasts of the man himself. Most PRS models use the compensated wraparound. Any PRS nut will tell you its far better than the ABR. Hands down. besides you wouldn't need a tune-o-matic bridge if Gibson could just properly locate the posts to begin with, like PRS does. You can pick up your consolation prize at the door.

What about fret ends? Are they finished properly or are they sharp? I don't believe this model has binding of any sort to cover them. I bought one of the double cut Tributes earlier this year when they were marked down but the frets were pretty rough so I returned it.

What’s the tuning stability like? I’ve owned a handful of expensive Les Pauls in my life and they sound great but couldn’t ever stay in tune. Has anyone else experienced this, or did I just have bad luck with Gibson’s?

It's a pretty well documented issue. My Les Paul would go way out of tune from a single bend, until I started lock wrapping, like this -> kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5-9ZqiqbrJnp5I
