Fun fact: both the himi/miya and the arrtx gouache are produced in China, mainly for students taking standardized entrance tests for art college (yes we have TESTS even for art students). During the tests students are required to finish a still life painting with gouache in a limited time, and it obviously takes months and tons of gouache to practice. So jelly gouache is meant to be quickly and easily replaced when one color runs out, and you can buy individual colors at a store in china. ps: I don’t know if jelly gouache has become a trend but it is really overpriced on amazon. In China you can get the same set for 8 bucks +shipping. *sorry for the cringy English I’m still learning.

I’ve had the Himi gouache palette for a couple months even if I haven’t used it a bunch(gouache is scary, guys) I can already tell that it’s seriously so convenient. It combines the convenience of a gouache or watercolour palette with the magic of wet paint! It’s so easy to just pick up and use without having to squeeze out paint or worry about wasting whatever gets left over. As a result though, I don’t think this selection of colours really interests me. I feel like I wouldn’t use these colours enough to justify keeping them in my “always ready to use” palette. If you use a lot of pastel colours though, this could be a great palette for you.

i’ve found that helping the himi set when the gouache dries out, ice sprayed them with water and then mixed the paint in the cups one by one with a toothpick or a bobby pin until the paint is consistent and smooth again. you can also pick out all the cups to clean the palette when you do it. i’ve had my palette for about a year as well and then did that last week and they’re good as new and still haven’t dried out.

My tip for this is to just go crazy with colors. Slap them in. Green nose. Blue chin. Pink sky. The more you use color, the more you learn what and what doesn't work. Its ok to be nervous, but make the art anyway!! The good art will come after you learn what colors you like next to each other. Dont forget value either! You can have any color touching and still have contrast If the values are different enough. Good luck!

I really like the color selection of this palette. For someone who already has the primaries, this is a great addition. For instance, I have the Windsor & Newton 10 piece set which has a split primary, yellow ochre, permanent green, black and ZINC white. I’ve added a huge tube of titanium white and also a burnt sienna and umber. This is what I mean by “the primaries.” I can mix anything. This palette would be a useful ADDITION to what I have, but not as a stand alone set.

I don't understand the colour range in this palette at all. There's a reason why traditional palettes contain the colours that they do ie a split warm-cool basic palette with perhaps a couple of greens, burnt umber, burnt sienna, etc, and that is that you can mix whatever you want from them. Pastel colours are so easy to mix with gouache using titanium white and I don't find the pastels included in this set particularly pleasing or useful. I'm impressed by the tonal range you were able to achieve using this palette. As always, I love your review. I always learn something, even if it is a product I am never going to buy.

And lots of duplicate colors as backups for when I use them up in the main ^^ I couldn't choose between the two, even now 👀 so I'm happy to get both! Around $35 for both, which in my mind is very affordable for 1080ml of paint! 🌟 I keep both of these palettes in a 1.5 gallon ziplock bag (as a gallon bag was just barely too small) to ensure that they are kept in an airtight environment ^^

The main thing that I'd be more concerned about with these jelly gouaches is the feel of the paints when re-wetting them after they've fully dried. With tube gouaches, I can never manage to get that fully opaque mix with a dried cake, it always comes out more watercolor like. I've since learned how to paint with thinner/wetter paints, but sometimes I really want that flat, even, opaque wash.

I'm curious if you'd be interested in making a video about revitalizing any dried gouache from your himi set? I've had my palette for over a year now and because the palette lid isn't air tight my paints inevitably dried out. Even though adding water revitalizes the top layer of paint, I feel like I'm damaging my brush in my effort to loosen up the gouache which is almost rock hard at this point. Could you possibly offer any advice on how to reactive the gouache more efficiently and/or how to slow down the process of the gouache drying out?
