About the brushes: If I could make the choice again, I'd skip the brushes. I like the long handles and there are two nice soft ones that are great for gouache, but I ended up using brushes I already had more often with this set anyway. Although, I've heard that the bristle brushes are more common for gouache in China, perhaps? I did enjoy using them for acrylics though! They'll get used for something, even if it's not this gouache. :3

When I try to find a video on skin color I only find realistic examples but never how to use “unnatural” colors and still make it look harmonious. Can you do a video behind the logic of how you paint skin with unnatural colors and about abstraction?

Civil Atrocious I feel you I’m two years into college and I second guess my career plans every day.. but I feel like once you gain more experience and take a variety of classes you’ll get an idea of what you’ll want to do. They say you have to choose your major junior year of highschool but now that I’m in college that just sounds ridiculous. Also imo I don’t think you initially have to be good at something to commit to it, the passion you have for it is more important. That passion would then drive you to practice more and thus get better ✌🏻 Get involved in the communities of what interests you and get you some answers!!

What!!! NONSENSE! I only had 2 drawing classes in my life. 1 was useless and the other one was fun but kinda useless cuz I don't do real life shit THE POINT IS I got into painting without any painting classes??? And I love it. I love it so much. Seeing videos like these just gives me more ideas on how to come up with my own technique that I feel comfortable with. Please get into it. You won't go back.

Just alittle tip, buy the full size imperial sheets of proffesional watercolor paper. It's a million times cheaper and you can cut your own sizes. Iam a professional artist and Bookbinder and I order my watercolor sheets from Blicks, jacksons or cheap joes. My absolute favorite paper is Saunders Waterford without a doubt! You think you love Arches, try Saunders and you can thank me later lol. But anyway, I do still buy Arches and Fabriano Artistico and Fabriano's handmade line ( which is only sold in sheets and is insanely exspensive) but between those 3 big brands Arches at blick the last time I stocked up my art studio was around $4 for a 22" ×30" sheet of Cold press 300gsm. I use 300 lb or 400 lb paper of it is for a watercolor painting and they were around $13 a sheet. Fabriano Artistico is $5 for a sheet of 140 lb. And they have a buy 3- get 1 free pack for really cheap. The Saunders is a bit more exspensive at $7 a sheet and $10 for high white. But they also discount each sheet by a $1 if you buy more than 5, and thats with all 3 brands. Now these prices iam listing are gonna be alittle off because I rounded the numbers and they do change weekly. But a block of Arches 10× 12" will cost like 80$ and you can cut the same size papers for 3 Arches imperial sheets for $15. I also suggest to people to buy a small bottle of pad binding glue from Amazon for about $6...it is the rubbery glue that allows you to clue the paper together and tear it off cleanly ( if you love blocks and don't like to tape your paper down ) I just straight use 300 lb- 400 lb watercolor paper and that only has to be sat on the table with no tape, because it's like paper plywood lol. Anyway I hope this helps and stop wasting so much money on pads and blocks of professional 100% cotton papers... they are a rip off. Have a great day

I actually just talked about in my last vid about how convenience is so important to me in my art because it encourages me to actually DO the thing and not worry about it being a hassle. PILLOW doesn’t have to be if you find a medium that’s quick and easy for you! Watercolor is something that has become exceedingly convenient for me. BUT when I’m feeling extra fancy and don’t mind the hassle of setup, I play with oil paints. Like you, the hassle of the setup of my oils prevents me from enjoying them often, but watercolors? Super easy once you’ve got a palette.
@pillow3209

@@MeowMeowKapow watercolours are so easy omg, but I always think other mediums look better (imo) but they're always more annoying to set up and work with. I love acrylics, the worst to set up is deffo oil cos THE SPIRITS. You also have to be in a ventilated room which is hard when you live with other people 😭😭. I switched to ink and it's super easy LOL
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 5 жыл бұрын
PILLOW oh, I don’t use spirits at all! Just use straight linseed oil as my thinner, and safflower oil to clean my brushes. The main thing standing in my way is honestly just time and space, since I paint in a layered way with oils that takes multiple days. I’ve posted two oil paintings on my channel and each took the majority of a week, and when you need to put out one vid a week that doesn’t leave much wiggle room. So I’ll work on other projects at the same time, but my desk space is relatively small so shuffling around all the stuff I need for each medium becomes annoying. =>.

@@pillow3209 you dont need mineral spirits, you dont need a well ventilated room, and you make a bunch of excuses for not painting. If an endeavor has to be as easy and effortless as possible for you to do it, then you clearly dont really want to do it.

I have owned too many art supplies that intimidated me and ended up sitting in a nice case in a drawer instead of being used. I think I swatched most of them once and then I just couldn't bring myself to experiment with them and learn how to use them. With the HIMI set, idk if it's the packaging or the price, I'm not afraid to use them. I just spent 3.5 hours last night playing around with them on a sketch and learning how to use them. I made a basic swatch card, then a mix chart and just had FUN. I haven't been able to do that in a long time, so it was a nice change of pace. It didn't feel like a waste of products, and being my first time trying gouache paints I couldn't tell if it was high or low quality so I just went to town.

So glad you did a review of this. I really love the opacity of this gouache. It looks sooo creamy and they way it shows brush strokes! Mmhh! Totally going to have to get this set! The only thing that really concerns me is that the cups themselves don't have lids. I wish they did just cause I'm worried about mold and bacteria getting in. I've seen people used the paint pot strips (you know the ones that hold paint in kids sets) in their own homemade altoid tin paint palettes instead of pans because it adds another layer of protection when creating palettes so maybe I just might make my own before I invest in this one.

I want to get these now.. I never used guache before. I love painting acrylic landscapes but it feels like too much.. And even cheap canvas boards feel intimidating. They also take up so much space I don't have so I can't make piece after piece. I'm so tempted to get this set now. Expensive art supplies intimidate me so much. It's been hard to even use my Canson Mixed Media sketchbook. It was only 7 dollars but its the most expensive sketchbook I have too. Not sure if it'll hold guache though. Would absolutely love to do landscape studies in a sketchbook if guache is good for that!.

This Palette works well for gouache as it helps it to stay wet for a bit in-between painting sessions, but unfortunately it isn't fully airtight; letting the surface of the paint crack and letting dust enter. It also doesn't ensure the paint won't mix into each neighbouring paint wells if tipped slightly. This palette I will link is the one I use for my gouache and is also great for oil paint too, I have bought 2 of them so far. There are six clips to strongly hold the lid down, and the underside of the lid is actually a rubber surface to individually seal each paint well. - www.amazon.com/Transon-Watercolor-Palette-Airtight-Gouache/dp/B074W5TFD7 This one is fully airtight and when I fill/refill it with gouache, I put a small amount of gum arabic in there and mix it in with the paint to ensure no drying out at all. Works perfectly, and just spritz with a fine mist when you open to use it and the paint is exactly the same as if it just came out of the tube months later.

I got one similar but the wells were tiny, half a pan worth. I used a few drops of glycerin in each jelly cup to keep them from crumbling and they'll stay moist longer. It's not as expensive as gum arabic and has multiple uses at the art table.

Oml I’m so glad someone’s talking about this brand. I took a shot and grabbed this set a few months ago and I absolutely loved it! Himi by the way, I think, is the product name, whereas Miya is the Brand. I think lol. It’s such a nice set, and I was so sure it was going to be terrible, but it’s actually so nice. The film lid things are obnoxious but I actually really loved the brand. I’ve had my set for nearly a year and they’re still wet and nice. When I don’t use them for a while, they start to dry but they’re pretty easy to get back into working order with a good mixing or a touch of water.

I wonder how it holds up in hot, humid, tropical weather 🤔 I'm always scared of my wc paints getting mold so I don't use brands like sennelier and m.graham, and with that gouache staying mostly wet or moist, I'm a bit hesitant to try it

It seems this set is a bit more expensive here in the UK, though it might just be that I need to shop around a bit to find it cheaper than Amazon's £29.99. I used to use gouache a lot when I was at college and watching you paint has me thinking I should get back into it!

I would imagine that the white is titanium/opaque, and the mixing white is zinc/translucent. The mixing white will lighten your colors without too much chalkiness.

I have a W&N set and a Reeves set...I just add W&N white to the Reeves colors and it gives me a nice color selection, great coverage and a nice matte finish with no streakiness. Sure, it's probably not lightfast, but it's great for practice and it's cheap.

The colors are very nice! Took me a while to get use to the water ratio but I eventually got it. I painted with them 2-3 times.

While the mint green palette is fun it's not all that helpful when trying to mix colour. There's a reason why palettes are white: it more closely resembles the paper on which you will be painting and therefore allows you to mix your colour more accurately.

If I could make the choice again, I'd skip the brushes. :3

Just got this set and I'm so excited. I studied illustration and it's been four years since I graduated but I've had the biggest art block of my life, as in years. So I'm trying to get back to basics practicing more, and just experimenting. It's hard for me to enjoy making art anymore when there's so much pressure to make money from it. I loved watching you work, it's so refreshing.

If your main reason you love is it because of the convenience, you can make an identical (better) setup by getting a sealable paint boxes (quick search on amazon will find one). Just fill with your favorite brand. Mine has a rubber seal under the lid which makes it 100% airtight and I can keep the paint wet indefinitely. This way I can use professional brands. This comment is directed at anyone who wants something higher quality but same convenience! Cheers,

I just got these today after seeing many actual artists (I'm not quite there yet, just a colourist) using them and liking them for, as you said, a low-cost way to learn and experiment without feeling like you're wasting paint. I have a very nice holbien set but yeah not quite there yet. they are really fun and while I had no trouble removing the lids I used the excess paint to smudge into my art journal, certainly no waste there!

So I got this gouache set 2 weeks ago for the same reason! I love my more expensive gouache but as a beginner I don't feel comfortable using it as sparingly. For the price and quality, my only concern is that they don't seem to sell refills. I have noticed that the lid on mine does not fully close, as in that the short edges on the left and right don't fully meet with the bottom plastic when the lid is clicked closed. I was just wondering if yours did the same thing, just because I'm wondering if that will affect the drying time of the jelly cups.
@longyarn4288

You should contact their customer service about the pallet and I read somewhere that you can get single refill cups on their website. I added a few drops of glycerin to each jelly cup to keep them from crumbling when they dry up.
