You can use jumper cables to maintain your ground until you complete the repair and reconnect the ground conductor.

Mike, be careful of removing grounds, they actually can carry current, as there is a lot of leakage in modern electronics. It can easily be enough to kill you. Also if there is any sort of neutral wire issues, all the house current could be using that ground lead. Its possible to have 120VAC on that line and create an arc. A good way to verify is to use a clamp on meter to just see if there is any current running though the pipe / wire. The safest way is of course to turn off the power to the house with the main breaker, which I know won't happen, but its the best way.

Even if you turn off the main you can have the neighbors current running backwards through the ground. If you can use jumper cables to divert the current to a different ground that is the best way.

I left New York State in 2005 for sunny Florida and lower taxes. Also my city just replaced a few of my sidewalk slabs not for cracking but because of discoloration. Plus no charge

How much reduction in flow would you get from going down to 1/2 for the meter ? Don’t most meters come in a pipe diameter that matches the incoming service line? I have 1” black thick wall poly to 3/4 meter to the house supply all in 3/4 for instance .

The electrical bonding wire continues the electrical ground to the street side of the water piping system when the water meter is removed for servicing. The meter bonding wire can be attached to the water pipe at any convenient location adjacent to the house side of the meter.

Around here on the Cape we call those meter nipples - Meter spuds We are also not allowed here to touch the curb valve, but I have a curb wrench just in case I have to shut it off and don't want to wait for water company to show up

My mother lives on the Cape. In her town the curb stop and service lateral belongs to the homeowner. If there's a leak it's on you. We had to dig a 6ft deep hole in the yard to fix a leak where a rock had rubbed through the PE service lateral.

Each town on the cape have their own regs. Some towns the water company is responsible up to meter no matter where the meter is. Some water companies are responsible only to the curb stop. In another town if the 90 degree elbow and lead lined nipple before street side shut off needs replacing, plumber makes the changes after water company turns off the curb valve. @@theodorgiosan2570

Mickey_Pipes - I see a few people have commented about the water meter ground - The electric ground clamp shall be on the water pipe from the street - closest to the wall, before the meter, before any water valve. Additionally, there shall be a jumper wire to the other side of the house plumbing. The metal clamps used must match the type of pipe - Steel clamp for galvanized pipe; brass clamp for copper. These rules have been in effect for over 30 years, it's the national electric code. It has to ground both the electric service to the panel and also the metal plumbing in the house; it has to work whether there;s a water meter or not. Also, If a plumber takes out metal pipe in a house and replaces with plastic - electric grounding clamps and a jumper wire need to be installed.

I feel for you guys up there. Here in NC we still bury pipe about 2 ft down but most meters and curb stops are less than a foot deep in a meter box. I’ve replaced many main water lines with a few guys and shovels when I first started out

At 16:20 a 2 or 3 pound "dead blow hammer" might have worked better than a pipe wrench. When de-soldering, you weren't heating both sides of the pipe equally. And: what about the "flooding" at 5:07? Seems like the city water company would need to dig up & replace the curbside shutoff, no?

Any one want to know what happens when the curb stop fails, My mom had that happen at her house and they had to come and dig it up and unhook it so it could weep into the hole they dug while we went into the house to sweat on a new 1.25 inch ball valve inside the house to replace the old gate valve that was leaking through. We couldn't sweat the valve inside because the curb stop was weeping water through. Sad thing is they didn't replace it, they just hooked it back up after we got the valve installed inside and turned it back on.

When your explaining about the sidewalks and such the property owner owns the land. There is right of way for travel as well as utilities. The county doesn't own it. Any road has a right of way for travel.

That may be true in your state (I doubt it), but not in New York. Rights-of-way are legally defined continuous parcels of land that are government owned and designated as a right-of-way for travel (as opposed to government land that is not open to travel - buildings, parks, random other pieces). In NY the Right-of-way can be state, county, or town/city - this is the maintenance jurisdiction.

This is exactly why i despise copper. Sweating is such a pita for removing later. Any chance i get i cut off as much copper as i can, screw around with sweating on a propex fitting for an hour and the rest takes about 5 minutes.
